  • Some have asked me why Super 7 Reaction action figures cost so much, sometimes more than $20 a figure, well I figured it was time I talked about it and sadly why they are so high.

      It’s plain and simple, you’re not getting $20 worth of product with these at all. $10 is properly priced for something this basic. Don’t get me wrong, these are cool but they shouldn’t cost as much as a high end Star Wars fig.

    The funny thing is, I'm fairly sure that Super7 ReAction figures were $10 when they first came out (or at least when I first started noticing them in 2015ish). That's what I paid for the Michael Myers, Jason, and Freddie figures. Back then when ReAction figures went on clearance, they could go as low as like $4-5 (which is what I paid for an Escape from NY Snake Plissken figure). It's batshit insane how these things have doubled in price in such a relatively short period of time.

    Great video, I agree with all you said but as a collector and someone who remembers buying a $1.99 figure meant for kids believe that toy companies have lost their way and are way more interested in the adult collector and their nostalgic memories - not going to pay $20 for a figure when gas is $6 a gallon

    • @brushstroke3733
      @brushstroke3733 Před 2 lety

      I remember when Kenner Star Wars figures came out they were at least $5. Back then the price of gas was about $1 a gallon. So if you scale the two, the price of Super 7 figures now is comparable to ths original Star Wars figures when they were released. How much do you think figures should cost when gas is $20 a gallon? It's all relative. Inflation is how governments and banks steal all of our assets over time by constantly devaluing everything we own. Don't be mad at toy companies, they're just trying to keep up with inflation like you and me.

    This is why I enjoy collecting Final Faction figures. They’re $1.25! For the price you pay, the molds and paint jobs are impressive. Since I’ve heard about them it’s becoming fun to collect again. I think nostalgic licensing is way overplayed. It’s time to come out with something original that you don’t mind taking out of the package and fiddling around with. I really don’t care about them becoming valuable. I can spend $20 and walk home with tons of creative ORIGINAL designs.

    • @brushstroke3733
      @brushstroke3733 Před 2 lety +3

      Ironically, since few people are probably collecting Final Faction to save, and since they are a line some kids may actually play with and enjoy, Final Faction toys will probably end up being the collectibles thirty five years from now, while all the current collectible stuff will be overbought, readily available, and of no nostalgic interest to the next generation of collectors. Hence, collectibles will be worthless, and Final Faction toys (or anything that isn't really bought with the intention of keeping and preserving) will likely go up in value due to their natural scarcity.

    The reason these are $20 a pop is because they are brand new molds and smaller production runs(more niche) even tho these are small.
    The ReAction line usually has pretty decent art work on the cards as well. And I would imagine Super7 pays the artist pretty well.
    At the end, let be real. How many you know collects ReAction compared to DC Multiverse, Marvel Legends or Transformer toys? Not much so smaller sales numbers means costs more per figure.
    In addition, these are not retail figures until recently at Target but the amount isn't enough to be considered a mass order.

    Most of the tmnt figures can be had for less than 15 dollars on ebay, and that seems like an appropriate price if you plan on picking up only a few. But yeah, 20+ dollars is a bit too much unless you're really into the old school action figure aesthetic. These are for a certain kind of collector, and are probably considered more of an art piece than an actual toy. Something neat looking to display unopened on your shelf more than something to pose and play with.

    Star Wars figures were retailing for $1.99 in 1979. According to the inflation calculator, that’s $7.92 now. So, yeah... $20 is way out of line. But, 3 3/4 figures are a niche now. Less demand, licensing fees, collector only appeal... $20 probably is the best they can do and still keep the doors open and develop new product.
    Will the market want to buy it at that retail price though? I predict Super 7 folds in the next 3 years.

      @@ThatJunkman I don’t disagree with you. They are niche. But, 3 3/4 has become niche, compared to where it was less than 10 years ago.
      $20, I look at that price and compare it to all the other things I can get. $5-10 more for a Marvel or Black series. If I’m looking for a gift, I can get the cheap $20-30 games for current systems.
      Like you said, it’s an art/novelty item. Very cool looking. But, $20, it has too much competition in that price range. Especially if the adult collector is already turned off at the price.
      But, I’m cheap. So, I’m certainly not the target demographic.

    I've picked up the music based ones like, Slayer, Maiden, Misfits, Motorhead, Megadeth, Anthrax and the horror ones like, Alien, TCFTBL, Mole People, Wolfman, Frankenstein, Evil Dead and a few others. They're far more expensive in the UK - probably, between 20 and 30 dollars in your money - because they're not exactly on supermarket shelves. You have to order through Zavvi or specialist collector shops. I stuck them on the wall.

    The original show Star Trek figures were in Walmart 5 years ago and they were peg warmers. The photos on the cards were nice but all the figures looked the same. If it was the licenses costing them, then The Worst figures, which is thier own mark, would be cheaper. I doubt that my pet monster or peewee are that expensive to license either. They're priced because of the nostalgia factor

    I should know by now but I’m always shocked at the size of the figures, too. Just got a $45 ($59 with shipping) set of the comic con “exclusive” Roger Rabbit and Judge Doom figures and while I love them to an extent- it’s a lot of money to spend on burger king toy-sized figures…They are special but not $60 special…I guess I kind of blindly hoped I’d be surprised at the actual dimensions for that price- considering the normal ReActions are “only” $20 a piece…

    As you said, Super 7 has to produce these figures in relatively small volumes which also raises the per unit tooling cost. For example, if only 20,000 of a particular figure is made, that figure's tooling cost would be 10 times the tooling cost of a comparable figure that was produced in a quantity of 200,000. Similarly, the per unit cost to set up paint applications and print packaging are higher for items produced in relatively lower volumes. People who complain about the price don't understand production, transportation, storage, sales, or supply and demand. They just want things to cost less so they can buy more without earning more.

    If they were 10 bucks each they would never be in stock. All the hoarders and collectors would buy them all and then people would be complaining that they can't find them. Whatever price people would complain either way.

      Id rather choose stock shortages personally, at least id own some then .. but at this price i wont buy any. Also the 'My Pet Monster' Reaction sold out very quickly (Hence countless colour reissues) so this clearly is not the situation with some characters.

    Economies of scale. The more of each specific toy they produce, the cheaper the cost for them and the less they have to charge in order to make a profit.
    Obviously the licensing rights to play a part, but these figures are likely being produced in much smaller quantities than something like a Black Series figure or a Marvel Legends figure. Keeping in mind that a small production run for a toy is still in the tens of thousands.
    If Walmart started carrying them, that would go a long way in reducing the price. Target has around 1900 stores n the US, but Walmart has almost 5000 (including Neighborhood Markets - which do have toy sections, BTW). In order to get product into that many stores, ReAction would have to increase their production numbers significantly, which would in turn lower the price.
    I do find it interesting that Hasbro does their own retro lines for Marvel and Star Wars, but they license out GI Joe and Transformers. Two properties that they actually own outright.

    There's 4 GI Joes and 2 Star Wars Droids figures from Super7 at Target right now, that are Target exclusives. Also, Brain the CEO of Super7 said in a youtube video that they do a process on the cardbacks where they double laminate both sides at the same time, which he says is why they're so flat. The Hasbro ones, I guess they don't do that anymore, except with con exclusives, like those multi colored ones you love so much.
