Silicone is bad news, but better than digging out JB weld. Unfortunately, I have experience with that. I am sure you already know this. But a lot of new mechanics don't. You've got to be real careful getting the right cylinders on the right lower end on the old iron. I was building a 48 EL basket about 45 years ago in my twenties, and I put on later cylinders not realizing my mistake (l was a newbie). Started it up, it ran good, then started smoking like hell! I couldn't figure out what was going on. My Dad stopped by and told me I'm using the wrong cylinders. You didn't have the luxury of nowadays of just going in and buying everything you need over-the-counter or ordering online, you had to scrounge for it. My dad cut his teeth on Knuckles, Pans and 74" Flatheads, cuz back then that's all they had. Eventually, my stubborn ass figured out he was right, as oil wasn't returning and it was filling up in the heads and burning off. An amateur mistake but I was still learning back then. Still riding Panheads. Nowadays it's a 1949 EL.

Just got a “basket case” 1958 pan motor that dropped a valve when it had a Shovelhead top end on it. Pretty sure I’m going to turn it back into a Panhead. This video was very helpful!

Sorry but I have to say it again. I cringe when I see you use power tools with your hair down and no eye protection. One little mistake and you're in a world of hurt. I have long hair and always put my hair back and wear some type of eye protection when I work with power tools or machinery.

Why would you put the pistols on first, now you have to fight with the rings, the fight with the cylinders? Why not put the rings on, then fit the pistons in the cylinders, then put everything on as an assembly, then all you have to do on the bike is 2 spiral locks?

I'm curious about how do you make sure that the silicone, gaskets bits or sealant isn't lost inside. You mentioned blowing out the oil ports, can that debris end up down somewhere where you don't want a bunch of chunky stuff or does it blow up and out the drain vein? Appreciate the thoroughness of the vid!

Why wouldn't you put the rings on the pistons, then stick the pistols in the cylinders, then put that as an assembly on to the rods? That way all you need to do is put 1 clip on each wrist pin.

Sorry for the late response. Shovelheads are superior over the panhead design. Flow is better, roker boxes dont leak, better rocker design, intake manifold flows smoother and the exhaust ports dont break every time you look at them funny. Are they as cool, not really but were not really building drag bikes either so either head will perform just fine for our applications! Thanks
