  • The copy of the plan of Furness Abbey in the video is from a booklet I purchased from the visitor centre and it shows what the extent of the abbey was like before the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530's by King Henry VIII when Furness Abbey was the first to fall in 1537. So please bear in mind that as it is now, in ruins, not a lot remains as many walls on the plan are not there and many are nothing more than a few stones. With the help of the booklet I have tried to name some areas in my video as accurately as I could with the footage I took. I apologise in advance if some I have named are not quite correct. I found it a very interesting and historical place to visit.
Furness Abbey in brief:- is a former Catholic monastery located to the north of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England and is located in the “Vale of Nightshade”. The abbey is built entirely out of local sandstone and dates back to 1123 and in 1147 it was passed to the Cistercians, who gradually enlarged and rebuilt the original church. It was once the second wealthiest and most powerful Cistercian monastery in the country behind Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire.
By the early sixteenth century it was one of the richest religious sites in the country and Furness Abbey was specifically targeted by Henry VIII's commissioners and so Furness Abbey was the first of the large monasteries to be dissolved as part of the Kings break from Rome with the Deed of surrender being signed on 9th April 1537.
Thank you for viewing and I hope you enjoy the walk around the ruins of this abbey.

The castles in Europe have always intrigued me. So much history and how they have survived all these years.
Far be it to find good masonry work today!
Thank you so much for sharing this historical tour with us.

Thank you Laura. Furness is in the south of Cumbria so not always easy to get there as it is away from the tourist part. That year we were staying quite near and I was so pleased we managed to visit as we have Fountains Abby, not far from us, that was destroyed almost the same time. King Henry VIII should never have let it happen. It is awful to think that these buildings were so beautiful and many more were destroyed and are just stones. A few like Furness and Fountains, that have some walls remaining, are now being looked after so the public can visit them. Have a happy day. Warm greetings, Julie🙂🧡🌞

Thank you for viewing Paul. It was a good visit as we were in the south of Cumbria last September for a week. The Abbey and Church ruins are in a large, peaceful area called the Vale of Nightshade. It must have looked wonderful before King Henry Vlll destroyed it along with many more monasteries and churches all those centuries ago. In North Yorkshire we have lovely Fountains Abbey to visit so I was interested to see Furness Abbey ruins. Have a happy week. Warm greetings, Julie 🙂🌈

It was an interesting place to visit Therese and I really enjoyed having the chance to visit those ruins. The abbey and church had been built in a very peaceful part of south Cumbria and one can understand why it was chosen while walking around the ruins. So many beautiful religious buildings were destroyed by King Henry Vlll but at least some have been saved for us to visit. Thank you for your kind comments Therese. Have a happy week. There was also a problem for visitors finding the entrance so only a couple more visitors with us that day and all due to a dispute with a culvert that needs repairing... the Council or English Heritage?? So until it is sorted that road remains closed! Once at home I managed to sort all the clips into some sort of order, with the help of the booklet I bought, and hoped it made sense. In the 16th century, many like this one, were destroyed in the UK. Very sad as some must have been very lovely. Henry Vlll of England has a lot to answer for 🙁Fountains Abbey is very near where I live and that came to the same sad end about the same time. It is now being looked after and I love going there. I must find time to revisit as I have not been to their new visitor centre yet. Have a happy day and a lovely weekend. Warm greetings. Julie🙂🌼🌈🌞

Thank you for viewing Don. We stayed quite near here last September I was pleased to visit Furness Abby and see how it had fared as it was destroyed around the same time as our Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. It was interesting but not many info. boards on the way around and as it was drizzling a little I didn't want to ruin the booklet we bought at the information centre. I must admit that booklet was a good help when it came to sorting all the clips I had taken or my video would have been all over the place 🙄 Back in the reign of King Henry Vlll lots of lovely monasteries etc. were destroyed and now we are lucky to see only a few still around but some are being looked after for visitors to go and see them. It was very peaceful walking around Furness abbey ruins, a bit like Fountains Abbey which is also set in a vale. Hope all is OK in Scotland and with you Don. I am longing to get up to near Fort William this year as it is years since we were up there. Not this June as we had planned 🤔 as I get my left eye cataract done a week today and then my right eye near end of June. I am very apprehensive about it all and just hope all goes well. Hope your weather is good. For some reason we have strong winds today but tomorrow might be better. Have a pleasant evening and a wonderful weekend. Warm greetings, Julie🙂🌈🌞

Thank you for viewing. I am pleased you found this abbey interesting. Sad that many others were destroyed in the 16th century. Some, like this one and Fountains Abbey, near where I live, are now being looked after for us to visit and know about their past.Have a happy weekend. Warm greetings, Julie🙂🌞

Thank you for you kind comments. I was lucky to be staying in south Cumbria last September so quite close to visit the ruins of Furness Abbey. A very peaceful place to walk around and an interesting history. Many monasteries and abbeys like this were pulled down in the rule of King Henry Vlll and what an awful fate as not many can be seen today. Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire was destroyed at the same time but is also open to visitors. Have a happy day. Warm greetings, Julie🙂🌸

Thank you for viewing. It was an interesting visit. So sad that in the 16th century, many abbeys like this were destroyed in the UK. Some are now being looked after, like Fountains Abbey, not too far from where I live. Now others can visit them and learn about their past. Have a happy weekend. Greetings, Julie🙂🌈🌞

Thank you Lola. Sad that many abbeys and monasteries were destroyed in the UK back in the 16th century. There are a few, like this abbey and Fountains Abbey, near where I live, that are now looked after and open to the public. Have a lovely day and a happy new week. Warm greetings, Julie🙂🌈🌞

It and Furness abbey are in peaceful vales and I was happy I got to visit Furness Abbey while we were staying quiet near last September. Have a happy weekend. Greetings, Julie.

I ave stayed in Cumbrian Lake Districy many times but never gone further south until last September when we stayed in the south lakes. The tourist parts are always crowded, whatever the season but where these abbey ruins are it is a good way south so not visited much. I was so pleased I went there as it has a lot of history attached to it. Thank you for viewing and have a happy week JJ. Warm greetings, Julie🙂

Thank you Carmen. It was a good chance to visit as we were in the south of Cumbria last September for a week. The Abbey and Church ruins are in a large, peaceful area called the Vale of Nightshade. It must have looked wonderful before it was destroyed as was many more monasteries and abbeys in the 16th century. In North Yorkshire we have lovely Fountains Abbey to visit so I was interested to see Furness Abbey ruins. Have a happy day and a wonderful weekend. Warm greetings, Julie🌞🧡
