Goofy is incredibly wrong in the way he handles all of this, though correct in his intent. He never takes Max's feelings into consideration when making an entirely spontaneous plan. And that's his prerogative as a father, but that doesn't make it right. Max's response to this treatment is, also wrong. He, understandably, finds it difficult to talk to his dad and explain things, because Goofy is prone to talking over him, but he doesn't really put any real effort into it until towards the end, either. He spends most of the time, prior to being given control over their stops either sulking or yelling.
Ultimately, both of them have entirely reasonable desires, but the way they handle them is poor.
But at this point, I'm just restating the song, aren't I? If we listen to each other's hearts, we'll find we're never too far apart.

And in Goof Troop, I heard somewhere there's a scene where Max or Goofy says his mom is watching them from above. This could imply that Mrs. Goof was in a car accident and didn't make it.

I remember there used to be this fanfic about a Disney high school. Four regular seniors get to go as exchange students (although it has to kind of be a secret). Anyway, they're going to watch this game and one of the boys who doesn't know Disney well, sees Max and is all like "Hey look, it's Goofy's son."
His friends are like "I can't believe you actually know something Disney", and the boy's like "Wait, he actually IS Goofy's son?" It's a shame the fanfic was deleted and cancelled, because I was really enjoying these four OCs interacting with the Disney characters who were normal teenagers. It was also funny to have some of the alternate character interpretations of some of the heroes. Phoebus was a major flirt and wouldn't leave one of the new girls alone (apparently he gave up on Esmeralda because she kept getting one over on him whenever he tried it on), and the other girl had this massive hate-on for Hercules, especially after he accidentally hit her in the head with a basketball.

The line that Pete says "Well, my son respects me" has always breaks my heart when I hear it because of how true it can be for some parents relationships with their kids. Rather than mutual respect and love, something a parent should strive for with their kids and is a marvelous achievement in life, there will always be parents who feel that their children are lesser than them and their relationship is a dictoral one.

    • @awesomesauce94

I don't think PJ even really respects his father, but fears him. if it was out of respect he would do what his father says of his own willingness and desire to make his dad proud. he only is obedient because he wants to avoid the wrath that he knows his dad is capable of.
      how I see it
respect: actively trying to make your parent happy
fear: desperately trying to avoid pissing them off
one is that of a healthy bond, the other is purely for survival. you and I seem to both agree on a healthy parent/child dynamic. I just wanted to add on a little more about the how fear is similar to respect, but more like the negative flipside.

    • @kriscynical
      @kriscynical Před 2 lety +3

I've always felt blessed to have a couple of Goofys for parents instead of Petes. When I was growing up I always obeyed their rules and made the effort to keep my grades up and stay out of trouble not because I feared their wrath or punishment, but because I wanted to make them happy and receive their praise for doing well. I wanted them to take pride in having me for their kid.
There's a huge difference between fearing a parent's punishment and fearing their disappointment. I feared disappointing them because I respected them so much and I still do. If I had really fucked up they would have doled out a punishment, ofc, but that disappointment would have been _so much worse._
I'm in my mid-30s now and their unofficial caregiver now that they're in their mid-70s. I live with them and that two-way road of respect has only grown since I was a kid. The reason why our living arrangement works is BECAUSE we respect each other as equals now that I'm an adult. They don't treat me like their child in an authoritative way; they treat me as an equal contributing adult in the household because I am.
The only way they still treat me like their child is in how much they love me and emotionally support me, as I do for them in turn. Again I know I'm really blessed that way, and I wish my parents weren't such a rare thing.

The part of this movie that always gets me, is when the principal tells Goofy that "I'd reevaluate the way you're raising your child, before he ends up in the electric chair!". It honestly makes me mad, every time I hear it. When I was in elementary school, I got sent to the Principals office for, repeatedly, not doing homework and not paying attention inclass. While I was sitting in the office, he called my Dad at work. He told him, in front of me, that if he didn't change how I was being raised, I would turn out a loser that would end up in jail or a ditch, and that he wold be within his authority, as my principal, to spank me with his wooden paddle, if I continued this way. (This was in the early 80's, in a small town, when that really did happen. After a few moments pause, in this flat dead voice, my Dad said, "Excuse me. I'll be there as soon as I can." That tone of voice always meant that my Dad was so furious that he was struggling to keep his temper. 20 minutes later he storms in, and I thought I was in the trouble of a lifetime. Instead I was treated him going off on the principal in this deadly calm voice that was more terrifying than any yelling would be. Saying he had no right to speak that way to me, to judge his and my Mother's parenting, and more. He ended it with saying that if he ever touched me, I was given full permission to treat him like an attacker and defend myself, and that he would come down and finish the job.
My Father was a strict man, growing up, but I never doubted that he loved me and would go to bat for me against anyone. I love him, respect him, and yeah, I did fear him a little. But I grew out of the last bit. My parents have always had my back for everything I have ever went through.

Cartoon history: It was actually the "ahyuck" laugh that made Goofy a star. Story goes that Walt Disney himself once heard one of the people at the Disney studios laugh in a very peculiar way, thought the laugh sounded funny, and decided "we should create a character who laughs that way." That was in the early 1930s... and in 1932, in the short cartoon "Mickey's Revue," we first got to see a prototype of Goofy on-screen and hear his characteristic laugh. It took a few cartoons before the character solidified, but the laugh was there from the very start.

It's really jarring hearing someone refer to "Goofy" as "the dad" this entire movie. The nightmare at the beginning was Max's fear of turning into his dad. Max's also embarrassed by his laugh because it's sounds like his dad's; 'A-hyuk!' is one of Goofy's iconic noises/phrases/verbal tics. Max doing the Mambo is also an indication that he takes after Goofy more then he wants believe he does. Also, you should go watch Goof Troop for more hijinks involving Goofy, Max, Pete (He's not his boss, he's his coworker) and PJ.

Best part about this single father and son relationship is that it didn't depend on there being a mother involved.
Most movies that have a single father raising kids always have to address the mom missing from the picture. And that alone always seems to get rid of all conflict so the movie can end.
But A Goofy Movie doesn't even bring up the mother. Doesn't say if she left, or died.
The mother had nothing to do with their relationship, it's just between father and son building a bond all on their own without the need to have them cry over a mom.
That to me makes this movie unique.

    Just to put that out:
-Being strict does not equals forcing stuff on your kid
    -Fear does NOT equals respect
A parent should only be strict(and not in an abusive way) when they are teaching their kid about things that benefits their SURVIVAL
You have to understand Max's perspective here as well.
You have no rights to force your kid on activities that have meant to be only for fun(aka personality related)
Either communicate with your kid or do not get a kid at all.

I never thought I'd see someone not know who Goofy is. You kept calling him 'Max's dad' the whole time and you asked at one point towards the beginning 'I wonder who's going to be Goofy', and I was just... what. how. Goofy is just as big as Mickey and Donald.
BTW, if you want to see more of Goofy and Max interacting, there's more than just the sequel to this film. You can check out Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas and Mickey's Twice Upon a Christmas. In 'Once', you'll get to see a much younger Max and the story is extremely wholesome. In 'Twice', its mostly just a music video featuring them, but it still tells a story focusing on their father/son dynamic.

The whole point is that Goody IS overstepping and doing too much to force a relationship while Max is trying to grow up and establish himself as a person. They’re both at fault. Massively underrated gem. I saw this as a kid round Max’s age when it came out. At that time i felt like “hey Max is making mistakes, but if Goofy would just let him tell him”. As an adult with kids, we watched it and i felt more on the Max has plenty of opportunities to speak up and Goofy just doesn’t understand what he’s into and struggles to connect. As an adult who’s kids are all grown and living their lives i understand the whole point, beauty and genius of this movies is that its all about communication. Max gets into his trouble because both him and Roxanne are too shy to talk to each other, Goofy and Max have so many problems along the way because neither takes that tiny little extra step during their trip. In the end when Goofy lets him and Max finally explains, Goofy is 100% with him, when he tells the truth to Roxanne she has the guts to tell him the truth too. A kids movie focused on Goofy thats over 25 years old still has more thought and care to all the characters than most things that come out in modern times. Just an amazing balance of heart, goofy comedy, and characters that you can enjoy at any age.

It's such a great movie. It came out when I was 15 or 16 and I've loved the movie ever since.
I grew up with the Disney Afternoon cartoons so I watched Goof Troop as a kid and I always saw
this movie as a sequel to the show.
Rob Paulsen who plays PJ later on voiced that character you mentioned Carl in Jimmy Neutron.
I grew up with him as the voice of Raphael in the 80's TMNT. He voiced Yakko and Pinky in Animaniacs
and also voiced them in the reboot on Hulu. He's one of my favorite voice actors.

Okay so some background not provided by others already in the comments:
-Goofy and basically every character is a dog except those like Pete and his family (in the show he also had a wife and daughter who no joke was named pistol) are cats,
-Even though Powerline is basically a combination of Michael Jackson and Prince, Disney actually asked Prince if he would voice him and he said no,
-Pauly Shore is the uncredited voice of Bobby,
-there were various Goofy shorts back in the 50’s where he had a son, but that one was not named Max or had his design and for some reason those shorts had Goofy named George, also side note I highly recommend watching the ones where Goofy is playing sports those are some of the funniest cartoons ever made look specifically for the:
    Hockey,
    Football,
    Tennis,
And Basketball ones basically everyone in the cartoon is a copy of Goofy,
-Goofy first appeared as a background character in a black and whire Mickey Mouse cartoon and his name was Dippy Dawg.
-the owner of possum park is voiced by Pat Buttram who Disney fans will know as the voice in many films including The Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood, Napoleon in the AristoCats, Luke in The Reacuers, and he was Chief in The Fox and the Hound, and also as Mr. Haney on Green Acres, the film is dedicated to him as he died before it was released,
-while this isn’t a fact about the film I just wanted to say that Roxanne and Max are such an adorkably cute couple and I love the fact that she isn’t just a bland popular knockout as you see she cares for Max who isn’t the most liked kid and she is shy and has some geeky friends who sidenote the girl with the hat with the flower is basically an animated version of a tv character called Blossom who was played by the actress who would become Amy on Big Bang Theory,
-I wasn’t able to type this all out earlier because I was at work when this was uploaded.

its a fun movie but I think I actually prefer the second one, but it might be simply because its a little less "Goofy" >

You don't understand! A Goofy Movie and both of the Homeward Bound movies were on constant replay in my room since I've been able to watch tv. Being born in '92 gave me good taste early on. 😁😁

9.9!! What a wise decision, sir! Goofy has always been my favorite Disney character and seeing him in a fatherly role was the best. I always saw both of their sides and enjoyed watching it play out over and over. I2I is still my favorite song of all of them. Plus, after watching this so much over the years, I'm pretty confident in my ability to imitate Goofy's laugh and classic scream😂😂😂
