SAN FRANCISCO - Welcome to San Francisco, California, and when it comes to eating, the king of all foods is the Dungeness crab. Today, weâre going on a Dungeness crab food tour in San Francisco. Weâll start at a local fish market, then to the popular tourist pier 39, and finish with legendary garlic Dungeness crab and garlic noodles.
Again, thank you to Visit California (and Visit San Francisco) for sponsoring my trip.

Alioto Lazio Fish Co (g.page/AliotoLazioFishCo?share) - To begin this Dungeness crab tour in San Francisco we started with a trip to Alioto Lazio Fish Co, a generations-old family run seafood distributor. Among other seafoods, what they are most known for is Dungeness crab that you can buy live. They also offer small cups of pre shelled crab that you can taste test. It was a good way to begin this tour.
Crab House at Pier 39 (g.page/crabhouseatpier39?share) - Next up, just down the road we headed over to Pier 39, probably the most famous of all places in all of San Francisco. Yes, itâs touristy, but itâs really nice and a great place to walk around, and of course to see the colony of California sea lions. For lunch we headed over to Crab House at Pier 39, a restaurant that of course focuses on Dungeness crab. Their famous dish is Dungeness crab served on a smoking iron skillet. The crab is roasted in butter, bathed in a secret spice sauce mixture, and drizzled in white wine tableside to smoke on the hot iron. The crabs were fantastic, sweet, and naturally delicious.
Thanh Long Restaurant (goo.gl/maps/HPVbjseiG2kdNdNc6) - The Dungeness crab restaurant I was most looking forward to trying was Thanh Long Restaurant, a legendary Vietnamese American restaurant that was one of the first Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco. It was amazing to hear a little behind the scenes of how the restaurant got started. The roasted crab and garlic noodles recipes are top secret - really a guarded family secret and they even have a secret kitchen to make them in where only family members are allowed. Their crabs are amazing, so garlicky and peppery, and then combined with the most addictive garlic noodles youâve ever had in your life - itâs a heavenly combination.
And that completes this Dungeness crab tour in San Francisco!

The dismay on Mark's face as the guy takes out the tamale of the crab head. My heart sank as well.
Probably went into the secret sauce.
I know, right? My heart sank as well. Tbh I would rather have the tomalley than the meat.
Nobody in the bay knows how to eat the tomalley
@@ChicagoTomahawk-sq3hxgo look up the oyster depot in sf, itâs literally one of their main dishes lol
I'm from the SF Bay Area and growing up my mom used to make seafood gumbo during Dungeness crab season -- THE best crab I've ever had. Actually my mom's signature dish was really a hybrid of a traditional Louisiana (her birthplace) gumbo and a San Francisco cioppino. Oooh, I miss her cooking.
Yes, omg its become a tradition with us too. We were so sad when the crab season was late but now we're making up for it. Already made the most amazing gumbo too and getting ready for a crab boil this weekend. We live in a truly amazing place. đ
Mines too. Love me some Seafood Gumbo minus the Okra
My family and my husband's family migrated from Louisiana to the Bay too. I locked him in with gumbo and salmon croquette. LOL
Yep đđđ Get em Sis locked mines in with Shrimp and Gritsđđđđ

I'm a seafood addict and my mouth is watering đ€€ watching Mark eat those dungeness đŠ San Fran, Pier 39 is on my bucket list so I can experience this deliciousness!
Mark Wiens, I very passionately enjoy these seafood videos. I eat alot of seafood myself because they are just too GOD DAM delicious. And also insanely addictively fun to eat too. Seafood > steaks/meats because they always have variety to them. There is literally never a dull moment with seafood ever to be honest. And on top of that, there are quite a bit of different combinations of drinks, toppings & of course condiments that go beautifully & eloquently well with seafood. Seafoods are hands down 1 of the greatest creations of mother nature. đ
Mark's enthusiasm for the crab is so contagious he's got me smiling and I'm not even eating! Makes me wanna grab my crab net and head out to the pier and catch my own crab lol
I love Mark Wiens. You can tell he loves what he does. Why doesn't he have a shirt that says "oh wow?"

Sitting here in South Africa the first thing that strikes me is the absolute passion that Mark displays is infectious, its delightful. The next thing is the food looks so wholesome, fresh and love has prepared it. The heart that Mark has for family, people and food is beautiful to behold. Thank you Mark for sharing your adventures, family and what you taste with us - I think you are amazing đ đ đ â€

He never disappoints. He brings us to the tasty and real dining experiences
He is truly amazing! I've followed him from time. Live when Mark, Sonny are together. He inspires our family meals as we watch his journey and experience around the world. Great job to Mark and his team.
Mark you produce the best video showing us the world through food....You are wonderful and so is Ying and Micah
I feel like I owe Mark a personal thank you for all this content.
No matter all the changes in the world and my life these past two years, his videos have always been something I can fall back onto, take some time to just sit back and experience different parts of the world, with such an energetic, respectful and charming host, while I munch on some instant noodles!
Seriously, Mark is the only personality I can stand for these types of videos.
I've had this as my little ritual for about four years now, first being introduced to the channel with the giant oyster in japan in 2017, and hopefully will be for many years to come!
Best wishes from the UK!
Hes living his dream travelling and eating great food while being paid to do so. You donât owe him anything.
Iâve lived in sf my whole life and have never heard of or been to any of these places. Iâm so thankful for folks like you who has made a living finding and reviewing these places. It helps businesses get more exposure! Iâm going to make plans to visit all the places your visited in sf :)
Go I swear you will not be disappointed. Crustaceans is also owned by the Anh family so you could try there too. Thanh Long is casual dress and Crusteasons is more formal. I know they have the same food and recipe but for some reason, Thanh Long is so much better. They put their foot in it LOL
The best part about all of Mark's videos is he makes you feel like you are there with him. The other thing is him doing it with his family. I am a forever fan.
Dungeness Crab season in San Francisco starts from November and we enjoy the abundance of crabs at that time. Thank you
Mark for showing the finest restaurants San Francisco has to offer. We love our city by the bay.

It has been a volatile couple of years here in San Francisco but thanks to Mark, I am reminded how beautiful my City is. Appreciate you being not only an ambassador of food, but for hope as well.
A civil war is going to break out in 2 years.
I was literally watching your videos last week thinking to myself, âI wish heâd come to my city.â SF native born and raised Im glad you got to enjoy our food. Iâve been going to Thanh Long and Crustacean since I was a kid and now you know why their kitchenâs locked up because those garlic noodles are NO JOKE. Glad you got to experience some cuisine here đ
As a San Franciscan, I m so thrilled to see Mark Wein featuring our amazing belove city to the world.. Unfortunately the pandemic has especially hit the touristy areas like Fisherman's Wharf and pier 39 the hardest. This area used to be packed with people all over. But now it look almost like a ghost town. Lots of stores are still closed or no longer in business. Just sad and heartbroken to see such an amazing place look so deserted. Thanks Mark for putting our amazing city back on the map. Hopefully everything will be back to normal once again.đđđ
even the sea lions have mostly deserted them. i'm a san franciscan too.
Well, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee and Florida were all open by then. The difference? Your governor and mayors. THEY killed your tourism and restaurant industries. Can't understand why Gruesome Newsom survived his recall....smh.
From what I understand the pandemic wasn't the only thing that destroyed San Francisco. I was stationed there in the early 90's and I understand that unfortunately it isn't the same beautiful city that it was when I was there.
I am from the Bay Area, and I can attest that the Garlic Noodles are delicious. Itâs sweet, garlicky, buttery with a hint of nuttiness.

OMG I was in crab heaven watching that video. Everything looked yummy. The Vietnamese restaurant certainly took the family secret recipes seriously. Thanks for sharing.đ
With everything that's happening in SF and the Bay Area, this video makes me want to explore SF again and eat at all these restaurants!
Thanks for sharing Mark. I recognised a number of places in San Francisco where I had visited back in late 2016. I even recognised the little stall where I purchased some pearls for my wife and daughters. Many thanks again. I remember buying some crabs in San Francisco, which I took back to my sister's home, only to be told by my nephew who is a doctor, that I should not risk eating the crabs due to some sort of algae that had poisoned the flesh. As I was flying back to Australia in four days, I though that discretion was the better part than valour, and had to dump the crabs. I had waited almost a lifetime to get to San Francisco just to eat those crabs. I left the USA thinking to myself, that had I become an undertaker, people would stop dying.
Crab is such a messy food to eat but sooo good..lobster doesn't come even close in taste imo. Always a pleasure to see Mark Ying and little Micahđ€

crabs look scary. How do people eat them and yet complain about spiders? they both are so scary for me.
i've already been to that thanh long restaurant in san francisco few years ago with my parents. truly one of the best restaurants we've tried there.
The thing about dungeness crabs is that they are so easy to peel and there is so much meat on them. The shells are thin and the meat has such a fantastic texture. They're the ones I eat most often, although I wouldn't say they're the tastiest crab.
Hey Mark, ying and micah!! I've been watching your videos for many years...you all travel and eat as a family...it must be difficult some times...as well as enjoyable... I'm very ill and can't travel...I'm only 37 but I travel vicariously through you and your family...thank you so much for all you do.
We are lucky to have eaten in Thanh Long Restaurant since it's earliest days. We are unlucky that we haven't been able to do that as often as we would like. We were also lucky to live in Bangkok (1968-1970) and unlucky that we have never had the chance to go to Vietnam or back to Bangkok. Even so, I'm very happy that Mark visited Thanh Long Restaurant, and very happy that I found Mark and CZcams a few years ago.
Our best wishes to you and your family Mark. We love having you in our lives. My wife and I are both 88 so traveling has become extremely local.

I work in the same building as their other restaurant cafe named Tiato and their garlic noodles (only served on Fridays and made in another location) are so mouth watering delish! Hi Mark and Ying: My wife and I love your videos. Back in the 1950's, my father use to stop at the corner bar here in Milwaukee every payday and pick up four Dungeness crabs for our family.
