My list for “modern” or new classics for Marvel include Ewing’s Immortal Hulk, Jason Aaron’s Thor, Slott’s Superior Spider-Man and his Silver Surfer run. Superior Spider-Man got me started reading comics consistently, and I haven’t stopped yet. For DC, Snyder’s Batman is the easy go-to. My picks are also Tom Taylor’s Injustice, Ram V’s The Swamp Thing and Tomasi’s Superman run. I don’t read as much DC so I’ve no doubt overlooked some runs.

@@loganthomas2421 It's funny, because there's any easy way to retcon Mayday back in with the current run. Just have Norman sit down with Peter and be like "I wasn't sure how to tell you this, but your kid isn't dead. Even at my worst, I wasn't that heartless. I just put her in foster care, and I've been keeping an eye on her since." Bam, instant Mayday.

You mentioned a few Tom King works, but I think my absolute favourite is his run on The Vision. There's something so captivating and tragic about Vision trying to make his own form of family, and for it to have some form of brief harmony and happiness, only for it to gradually fall apart until the dream is completely shattered.
Absolute 10/10, cannot recommend it enough.
Another banger, this time outside of the Big Two, is Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye from IDW. An indelible stamp on the 'Formers franchise with perhaps the most interesting and complex version of Megatron I've ever seen, a story about second chances, redemption, love and wacky sci-fi shenanigans; an absolute wild ride from start to finish.

    • @CozmicEmbyrs

Superior Spider-Man (plus ASM) by Slott / Ultimate Spider-Man by Bendis / Thor by Aaron / Doctor Strange by Aaron / Fantastic Four by Hickman / Avengers by Hickman / New Avengers by Bendis / Captain America by Brubaker / Uncanny X-Force by Remender / Venom by Cates / Immortal Hulk by Ewing / Wolverine by Way / Spider-Gwen by Latour / Journey Into Mystery by Gillen / Black Cat by Mackay / Strange Academy by Young / Captain Marvel by Thompson / Ghost Rider by Aaron / Superior Foes of Spider-Man by Spencer are some of my favorite runs to return to. Shorter arcs like Tom King's Vision, Thunderbolts by Ellis, and Cates' run of Thanos should also always be in print.

This was the first new 52 comic I ever read but for some reason I dropped it. Then seeing so many people bash on it on Reddit saying it’s overrated just helped me to rationalize putting it off all these years. I finally read the whole run recently and I’m mad at myself for listening to the haters.
The main complaint I see about the very successful film is that the plot was so straightforward, but if they stuck to the comics those twists would’ve made it the best DCEU movie in my opinion.

You guys brought up a lot of good stuff, but I'd like to throw a couple things out there in Sam Humphries' Green Lanterns run and Jed MacKay's Black Cat. I don't think either had a slump, and they both tell interesting stories.
I don't hear enough talk about Green Lanterns, but it has such great character development with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, and as someone who deals with anxiety on a daily basis, Jess's journey is really inspiring.
Black Cat was what put Jed MacKay's name in my mind, and anything with his name on it since seems like it's been gold. It's such a fun book and paints a very nuanced Felica Hardy. Between it and Moon Knight, I will pick up a Jed MacKay book pretty much because his name is on it.

1:12:01 Speaking of clones, even more surprising to me is that Joseph has recently returned in the Scarlet Witch book. If handled properly this time, it could mean that Magneto stays dead-dead for some time.
1:19:03 *Raises hand* I've always thought of the Morrison and Whedon runs as companion pieces to each other. But I was dubious about citing them here. As each run has a low moment that almost derails the run as a classic. For Whedon, the Danger arc. For Morrison, it would be Riot at Xaviers. Meanwhile also, the wildly inconsistent art direction. Seeing Whedon and Cassaday on every issue of Astonishing really makes me lament that Morrison and Quitely weren't the defacto team for the entire All-New run.

I like reading issues 78 to 105 Nightwing, but I am sadly finding hard to get others to like because they bashing Taylor 😢 (guess more bias against his progressive values than storytelling attempt such as those which who tell the story of Jon Kent - I am one who would want more adventures 🥺✌️). I know it’s not superhero, but how do we feel about Something is Killing the Children as a modern classic?

The walking dead is a modern classic. The ending might feel rushed but it doesn’t feel unearned

I don’t think we’re in the modern era any longer. It started in 86. I was 8. A lot has changed. If anything I think it’s a post modern or trade era. I would even say that Avengers: Disassembled ended the modern era.

The Jason Aaron run on The Punisher can kiss my ass, and not because it held Frank responsible. It's because in order to get him where he wanted to go Jason Aaron had to retcon so much about the character. So much so that it's not a continuation of the main line Punisher but rather his shitty Max series. An actual classic Punisher run is the Garth Ennis one, both the in canon one and the Max run.
