  • Friction pegs, like the ones we usually find on a violin, viola, or cello, can be downright scary to deal with. Of course, we do need to get our pegs reconditioned from time to time and some pegs are not cut well for the pegbox holes, creating more slipping and/or creaking than we should typically experience. However, even with well functioning pegs, it's not uncommon for students to break a string or two the first few times they try to tune with them. In this video I demonstrate tricks for tuning with friction pegs that will hopefully help you avoid common issues, like pegs slipping and strings breaking! While we could try to avoid the pegs and just use fine tuners, or get geared pegs professionally installed, it's empowering to know that we CAN master the art of using friction pegs and feel confident to tune any instrument that comes our way.
