Those names got me so confused. I was lost for the most part of it. But you did a good job in explaining, just me who gone astray.

In 1977, a movie with a strong horror color that was greatly modified from the original was produced.

So excited to see if there's a difference in how Agatha Christie writes her mysteries versus Yokomizo does theirs? Maybe if there's some sort of language pun or cultural information that Yokomizo might use in one of them? Nice to see this, it looks really interesting!

Style wise I feel they’re quite similar; i talk about it in that “introduction” video how the honkaku school (to which Yokomizo belongs) uses a lot of the same values as for example Agatha Christie as in they write well structured and fair murder mysteries (no surprise reveals or making the solution something the reader had no way of figuring out themselves) and that I really like!!👍🏼

@@kinderegard8437 I think you are right about Yokomizo's writing mysteries is similar to Christie's. The big difference is the atmosphere - his is very dark, old-time, in the isolated/closed villages, full of superstitions and strange old traditions. Many of the characters are bound by the old values, like the pride of Hon-ke/本家 (the house of direct line) and the jealousy of Bun-ke/分家 (the other branched houses related, but considered as lesser). As in "Yatsu-haka mura," the villagers often believe in the curses and such, so the murderers use them for their crimes. And like Christie, he uses children's play songs, too. These factors make his mysteries pretty eerie and scary, which are the signatures of his works. I am not sure how much of these can be translated in the English version.

Just finished the book. I was annoyed at the protagonist, he kept lying or holding secrets for no good reason that could've cleared things up if he just told someone. There were a few obvious suspects he refused to consider, the moment he started considering them, the mystery unraveled. I couldn't guess the motive, but the killer was fairly clear (if largely because they were inexplicably never suspected by the protagonist).

These book covers are so aesthetic! I've had your video bookmarked until I could read it myself. It's my first video of yours and you're so good 🙌🏼 There's another Kindaichi book coming out and I'm looking forward to reading that, too 🤩
