  • How would you open the trunk of a Toyota Prius when the auxiliary 12V battery is dead, disconnected or inoperative. You can't use the key to unlock because there is no keyhole in the rear door also known as hatch or boot.
It is actually quite easy. In this video, young mechanic Aiman will show you how to manually open the trunk of Toyota Prius Gen II I4 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive. Second generation 2 Toyota Prius include model years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.
    Here's a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Flip Down the Rear Seats
Step 2: Pull Back the Carpet to Expose the Tool Box
Step 3: Pull Back the Tool Box Lid
    Step 4: Remove the Cover
Step 5: Pull the Door Lever a.k.a manual release lever
Thanks for watching.... There are other DIY Auto repair, tutorial, guides, steps, how-to, tools review and many more how to remove, repair, install, replace and fix-it videos on EyeOnAiman's channel.

It's funny to me that people are complaining about how hard this is. Try it in a Porsche where you'll need to build, or buy their wiring thingy to power the vehicle and unlock your "frunk" to get to the dead battery. This is so simple. Thanks for the video!

Thank you so much for this very informative and clear video!
Not sure what the toyota engineers thought when they designed that “feature”, maybe it was a disgruntled employee, who’s revenge is felt across the globe by all prius owners…
Your video about how to replace the 12V battery is next on my list! 😊

No need to open the hatch back to jump start the car. Use an 8-foot jumping cable to get to the battery through the back door. We tried to open the hatch back unsuccessfully, then tried the cable through the car back door without any problems.

Thank you. That worked. The first go at it fight find it. Fingers in all the sharp holes. Then I came back watched this video and had to pull out more of the bottom deck till I could see in the spare tire (full sized) in the tire well. I found that little square hole. Like in the video. Had to push inside then outside then inside and upwards while releasing the little lever till it opened. All in all less than 15 minutes. No guess work.
Thank you so much Aiman! 🎉
Now that I have ready access to the rear small battery I've removed it and it's charging. Also needed to remove corrosion from negative post and clamp.
I'm hoping this fixes the red triangle of death issue that ended up where there is no power at all for locks, boot up, nothing.
We'll find out tomorrow. Trickle charge.
And I want to find a replacement for the negative bartering body ground cable. About 6"
Over 300k miles. 2007. Family hand me down Prius.

Thank you so much. I can't believe how poorly these things are designed. Who would design a car that fails to operate normally without power? Mine has a dead batter and I can't even roll it off the driveway without watching dozens of tutorials. My normal car just shifts to neutral and is ready to push. No fan of electric cars here!

Thanks. That close-up of the latch let me know what to look for.
In my 2009 Prius, there is no plastic cover, you access the release lever from up under the edge of the trim plastic. The lever is yellow chrome compared to everything else that is black. It has a slot in the middle for grabbing it with a screwdriver tip. There is not enough room for two fingers to get behind it, as was suggested on another page.
While lying on my belly across the car from the rear side door to above the spare tire, holding myself up with my left arm while trying to manipulate the lever with my right hand, I couldn't tell that I had released anything. There was no obvious click or pop. I had to push up on the trunk with my head to see that it had released, and a soon as I relaxed, it latched again. I stuck my screwdriver into the upper part of the latch to keep it from closing when I let go.
Thanks again for clear instructions. You got me there.

It sure would be nice if there were some old fashioned manual release down by the driver's seat on the floor that opened the rear hatch. So many times I've wanted to pop it open while staying in the driver's seat, but I can't, at least on my 2006.

Well doing this only the way the young man said didn’t quite work for me. It clicked like it had come open but I still couldn’t open it. So after pondering on it for a while I thought it might work to push outward on the just visible trunk latch while I pulled on the switch he shows and with a good bit of effort (I’m a 5’3” 70 year old lady) I was able to open the trunk. Now to see if I can use my son’s tools ( He’s out of state) to remove the 12v battery with the help of another video. I wish big don’t I.
