    This fridge is made by Samsung. There is a kit that came out that includes a drain extender to assist in melting the ice in the drain tube. Also, in some Samsung French door refrigerator videos there are recommendations to add an addition heating element above the evaporator coil on the copper tubes going down to the evaporator coil to assist in melting the ice buildup at the top near the fan area. I put in all the suggested items and have had very good results with corrected drainage.

    I have the same exact model (GFSS6KKYCSS) that is freezing up the same way. I've had to clear ice and unclog the drain several times over the last year. It's about time for a new fridge and not a GE fridge.

    But where is the drain pan? Where did all the water go that you poured down the drain?

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem +1

      The design of the fridge is that the water that drains out goes into a pan at the bottom of the fridge, under the coils (you have to take a panel off at the bottom of the fridge on the back to see it). Then, it's supposed to just evaporate. When you take the panel off, with my fridge, there are 2 rubber hoses, one from the freezer (I guess) and one from the fridge. When I defrosted it and poured hot water in, it came out into this pan. I used a turkey baster and sponge to dry up the cruddy, dusty water and I vacuumed out the coils so the fridge operates more efficiently. If you're "old", like me, you may recall that in the old days, refrigerators had a pan underneath that you would actually empty and clean out every so often. The way I have my fridge set up now, the condensate water goes into a bottle that I empty every few weeks. If your fridge is between cabinets, you probably can't do this, mine is at the end so I can easily reach behind it.

    I gotta do a posting on how I fixed mine. After defrosting the drain hose multiple times, I cut the back of the fridge open and re-routed the drain line down the outside of the fridge so it never freezes up. It's a really bad design - the drain line as manufactured goes inside the insulation so it's right next to the freezer compartment and it simply freezes. I cut the drain line and installed a new 5/16" vinyl hose and routed it into the existing drain pan at the bottom of the fridge. That's a bad design also, it is not drainable so the condensate is supposed to evaporate. After thinking about this, my fridge is at the end of my cabinets so the back is always accessible for me and I put a plastic bottle there and put my new hose into it so it fills every couple weeks, I empty it, and I have not had the ice / water inside the fridge since I did this. It's stupid but it kept me from replacing the fridge! I measured to figure out where the drain line was, cut the sheet metal with a utility knife and removed insulation with a spoon (really). The hole in the sheet metal is about 6 by 6 inches.

    Can't you just unplug the frig for a day or so to defrost it without taking it apart ? I have the same issue right now just a different model # practically same GE! Thanks Barb

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem

      Yes, you can simply let the whole thing get warm and defrost but, if my theory is correct, the drain line will freeze again. There must be an original cause of the drain line not working properly which leads to water (and ice) getting inside the refrigerator. The freezer section and insulation is very cold so when I tried "fixing" it by letting it defrost by itself, it was almost 2 days with the fridge and freezer wide open before the drain line was clear. So, you have to put all your frozen stuff someplace while you wait for it to defrost. But, yes, I defrosted it several times over about a year until I decided to either get a new unit (NOT a GE!!!) or to try to really fix it. So far, the drain line re-route has worked great! czcams.com/video/HwaP92Smvro/video.html

    Did this solve the problem or did the drain line freeze up again? And where did the hot water go that you poured in?

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem

      Once I moved the drain line to the outside and exposed the drain line and the bottom of the coil (that is inside the fridge) to the room temperature air, I have not had any problem with the thing freezing up again. At least the first time, you have to take the inside of the fridge apart and defrost everything. Before I cut the back open, I poured some hot water in to defrost the drain line and this water went into the condensate pan (see other comments on how to get at this - it's easy). After defrosting the drain line several times over about a year, I cut the back open and the problem is now, I believe, permanently solved.

    Is the deli/meat drawer supposed to roll out ? Mine does not. How did you get it out ???

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem

      The flat deli / meat drawer should roll then "lift" out. There is a roller in the middle so if you have ice build-up under it that ice may have "locked" the roller in.

    Have same problem. What i did is to let it thaw overnight all the ice melted good for another 3 months. Next time will try to clean from back side the drain hose plus thawing overnight

    How has your ice maker held up? Mine was making smaller irregular cubes and has finally died I think. Any idea

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem

      No. There can be other problems with any appliance and I do not pretend that my "fix" of ice inside the fridge will affect anything else. My daughter has a GE fridge of different design and she has gone through several ice makers. One thought - have you changed the water filter? It may not be getting enough water to make a big cube.

    • @HH-gn9qt
      @HH-gn9qt Před rokem

      @@jeffvalley67 Water flow seems to be ok and the filter has been changed not too long ago. The ice maker appears to be frequent failure for some GE fridges and I have a replacement on order. BTW, there is an aftermarket part that one can buy to help the heating of the drain hose to really fix this issue. I saw it on a Samsung fridge video having similar problems. I bought a couple of the parts hoping it will fit my GE fridge, which appears to be very similar to the Samsung fridge.

    • @jeffvalley67
      @jeffvalley67 Před rokem

      @@HH-gn9qt I agree regarding the aftermarket part. I tried it and it didn't work - I think you are referring to a tab that extends into the drain line. My theory is that the drain line freezes mid way down, behind the freezer. I also agree regarding GE ice makers. MINE has been ok but they do seem to fail a lot. Good luck, hopefully you can fix things, it's cheaper than a whole new fridge!

    • @HH-gn9qt
      @HH-gn9qt Před rokem

      @@jeffvalley67 the aftermarket part that extends into the drain line fixed my problem. I bought a 4 pack and used 3 if them. One went into the drain and two others I put on either side since there was evidence ice was forming in the trough that funnels water to the drain hole. This may have been my problem. Ice filled the trough which led to water not being able to get to the drain. Not sure but the problem is definitely gone.
