The whole scene is just distracting because I know, even if Lucas has made it nearly impossible for me to get my hands on the movies I watched when I was a kid, that the chick being dragged into the rancor pit was far more interesting and useful for establishing Jabba's character. To be perfectly honest, I actually really like Hayden Christensen as Anakin. True, there were definitely dialogue issues and the direction he was given was very questionable, but that is the fault of the writers and director, not Hayden himself. Hayden actually knew the character of Anakin spectacularly well as he and George Lucas actually sat down and had an extensive talk about it, and he did as well as he could with the material and direction he was given.

    What's interesting is that Lucas didn't think of dialogue as its own thing. He thought of dialogue as part of the soundtrack. In an interview with Alec Guinness during the time of the original trilogy, he states that Lucas' original script for the original Star Wars had extremely clunky and awkward dialogue, which he asked if some of it could be altered or changed. I guess he's never had a way with dialogue, but he believes that the emotion should be expressed by line delivery, the soundtrack, and body language, rather than the words themselves. Alec Guinness is also commonly referred to by fans as "hating Star Wars," but in this same interview I saw, he addressed this exact thing. He said that he wasn't a fan of sci-fi movies or books, but once he read Lucas' script, he couldn't stop reading it and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think people misjudged him calling Star Wars "goofy."

    • @mjfan8704
      @mjfan8704 Před 3 lety +5

      I guess many people don't like to think of Star Wars as goofy. Unfortunately there are multiple goofy scenes and lines within the OT. Lines like: "Get in there ya big oaf! I don't care what you smell!", or scenes such as Chewbacca repairing C-3PO and putting his head on backwards and Threepio complaining loudly about it. Or, and this one really takes the cake for me: Luke Skywalker telling his Protocol droid to make the Ewoks release him and the other rebels or Threepio will, and I quote, "Unleash your terrible powers upon them."

    Actually, one of my favorite changes was when the Millennium Falcon takes off from Tatooine. In the original it just shows a storm trooper looking up at it from the ground as it slowly flies away, in the SE it shows a close up from above as it lifts off out of the hanger bay and the engine powers up, then a more realistic take-off shot.

    Can't agree on the celebrations at the end of Return of the Jedi. They always seemed so out of place, especially considering the scope of the expanded universe at the time of the release of the Special Editions. It's not like the Empire just rolled over and died the moment the emperor was killed. The Rebels won a significant victory that day but the war wasn't over. The Force Awakens confirmed as much as the Battle of Jakku that basically did finally end the Empire wasn't until a year later. Depicting people celebrating on the Imperial capital world would have been like the citizens of Berlin taking to the streets to celebrate immediately after the D Day invasion.

    • @toahero5925
      @toahero5925 Před 7 lety +35

      actually the rebels did succeed in freeing the galaxy from tyranny, with the remnants of the empire retreating far out beyond the reach of the new republic, then members of the rebel alliance became "the resistance" and went chasing after those remnants. The scene in which the first order fires their star killer cannon was them pretty much erasing all of the major planets of the new republic and sending the galaxy into disarray.

      @XDLugia Před 4 lety +5

      Yeah, but no. The whole idea is that Vader was redeemed from the dark side and became Anakin again just before his death. In his dying moment, he was an aged Anakin of the light, hence why his ghost showed him like that. If Vader died before being redeemed, then it would make more sense.

It worked brilliantly for me that he pushed them into retreat for a few seconds by just being so confident in his charge at them, and when they click and he needs to turn tale and run, it was an hilarious character defining moment.

I loved them, loved them, loved them. However, a few years later I bought the DVDs set with the new additions and I liked them even better. Some of the changes are annoying (Han was the only one who shot, the other guy was dead before he got a chance to), but overall, I enjoy the new version of the movies more than the originals. All the changes that you mentioned were great, plus, I might be alone in this, but I love seeing the young Anakin ghost at the end of ROTJ. It took me a few viewings where I felt the lightsabers finally looked perfect, but never could figure out why until I realized that it was because they actually acted as light sources now. In previous movies, they just looked like glowy sticks with a sort of aura around them and it made it feel like they weren't quite... There. However, in Force Awakens, the fact that lightsabers illuminated the actors and the world around them made them feel a lot more present in the world itself and I loved that.

The force ghost looking nothing like the actual Anakin makes no sense, and it's obvious that if Anakin himself were to choose a form to take, it would be the one he was in the last time he was truly "Anakin Skywalker" the hero of the clone wars, powerful Jedi, opponent to the sith, symbol of hope, and most importantly the way he looked the last time he saw the love of his life.

    • @commandercorner5575
      @commandercorner5575 Před 7 lety +16

      Stevean2 The evidence is in the fact that they're cut back to back. It's basic movie logic, and if you can't understand that, then how do you follow any movie plot? One scene we see the death of the emperor, the next we get back to back cuts of celebrations across the galaxy. That's unbelievably clear that not only are they all joining together simultaneously in celebration, but that they're all celebrating the same thing, which is completely unrealistic. Naboo would have very different reasons to join together in celebration than Endor, but all we see in the movie is the battle of Endor won, which is why the Ewoks are celebrating in the first place, not the fall of the empire, not the death of the emperor, but the victory against the stormtroopers. For the humans there, the celebration was much larger, but we're given nothing to suggest anything else happened to warrant celebration on those other planets, and the cuts suggest they're happening simultaneously.

    personally I liked how they added in Hayden into revenge of the sith. My reasoning is as follows; when obi-wan was telling luke about how his father died, he said that Darth Vader murdered him, and the person that was once his father, ceased to exist. When Anakin turned to the dark side, he was portrayed by Christensen rather than the original actor that portrayed him in the original cut of return of the jedi. I feel like that emphasises the point that the part of him that became a force ghost was the jedi in him, rather than what he would look like if he wasn't a cyborg at that specific time. But hey, this is just my opinion 😁

That seems like a very short amount of time to get word to every plant, and I imagine some planets being less exuberant than others. I realize that they could be happening at different times, but the way the cuts work it seems like it is happening at the same time as the Ewok celebration. Despite the slightly dated CGI, I really always enjoyed the Stormtroopers on Dewbacks being shown in movement rather than as obscure background pieces like they are in the original, because of how it shows the Empire adapting to all the environments they occupy.

    The "Close the blast doors!" line was IN the original '77 theatrical release (at least in some theaters)...
    I remember having this discussion with a friend in college (circa 1991~1992), where we each remembered scenes from the original release that were NOT in the home video versions. One that we both remembered was the "Close the blast doors, close the blast doors!... Open the blast doors, open the blast doors!"
    There are other parts that I've still never seen since '77. 😕

    • @MrJest2
      @MrJest2 Před 7 lety +3

      Yep - there were several different versions distributed, some with slightly different dialog. I originally saw it in a first-run theater (that still had SenseSurround audio equpment at the time, and they used it to good effect), and the version I saw had the same line in it. It was only decades later that I learned about all the different print versions that were made back then, "tuned" to different projection and audio equipment.

    • @Screaming.Monkey
      @Screaming.Monkey Před 7 lety +13

      +MrJest2 Yeah, I've also heard that there were different versions during its first run.
      I also remember C3PO intentionally breaking something from the red droid's head, CAUSING him to fizzle, and thereby forcing Luke to buy R2-D2. C3PO saying "the next time I stick my neck out for you..." makes more sense in that context.
      😉

      Andrew Maid It didn’t make sense because Obi-wan and Yoda were ghosts shown at the age of when they died. Anakin was shown in his Revenge of the Sith look. Why did he look young but not Obi-wan or Yoda? If they made him look a bit older I would not mind the change.

    • @blackoutproductions6508
      @blackoutproductions6508 Před 4 lety +29

      @@arnathan1792 Ah but Anakin did die at that age. The moment he embrassed the dark side, Anakin was no more. Even Obi-wan spoke of how Anakin was killed by Darth Vader, not to trick Luke or the audience, but because it was true. Anakin truly died once he was consumed by the dark side, therefore being represented at his young age when being projected as a Jedi spirit.

      Stop Genduh he made a conscious choice to redeem himself, but that was after decades of being the Sith Lord’s enforcer. While the shot at redemption did allow him to be one with the force in the end, his true pure form was as Anakin Skywalker, not Darth Vader.

  • @Spartan322
    @Spartan322 Před 7 lety +27

    I actually liked the Anakin change at the end of the trilogy, it actually makes a lot of sense why he'd choose that old look as a peaceful force ghost, most notably cause it was the last look of him before he turned into Darth Vader and becoming what he should have been like (even though he never saw himself as what he should have became) instead of what he was. It also be more comforting being remember the young man he was instead of the old face he became. Also, I do like the prequels a fair bit too, and I felt mostly satisfied with what we got out of Lucas. And I'm not sure about the old fans of Star Wars, (as I was -1 years when the special edition came out) but I think they turned out mostly great, and they moved me emotionally. (of course I think the originals are still way superior to the prequels, but I think they concluded the circle well)

    *Episode IV: A New Hope*

    -some CG shots of the X-Wing Fighters during the Battle of Yavin.
    *Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back*
    -Ian McDiarmid's Emperor.
    *Episode VI: Return of the Jedi*

    The. “Close the blast doors” line was in the origin release before Empire Strikes Back and it being subtitled a new hope. It disappeared during an early rerelease and was later restored as you state here in the video. I know this because I saw what is now episode 4 many times in the theater and had a bootleg VHS. CPO’s extended dialog explaining how the tractor beam worked was also in the original release.
