PLAY AND TRADE GUITARS // PLAY IT and TRADE IT. - Hudba
This is Mario from Laguna Beach. I recently purchased the sparkling burgundy model from zZounds. All I can say is I'm in love. This guitar is top quality, sounds marvelous and plays like a wet dream. But weight relief? I dunno about all that since mine weighs just a gram short of ten lbs. But that's alright with me since I prefer the heavy Lesters anyway. I usually buy guitars and other equipment from zZounds and give them to my kids. However, this one I'm keeping for myself. I'm also keeping the Figured Gibson Aged Cherry Red ES-335 that I bought from zZounds too. Kids'll get them when I'm finally wearing a box.🙂
The color with these knobs looks stunning
I have this exact guitar same color and everything. You get so much more in the Modern and it's insane. It was also my first Gibson since then I have bought the Slash November Burst and I love them both but I think the Modern is my favorite!
color is perfect! withe all the appointments its a sleek rig!
Love the Phase Flip feature. Instantly gives a really different sound.
I have this guitar in Sparkling Burgundy. My guitar is lighter 8 lbs 13 oz. It is Feb 2020. I have different pickups installed in mine. Stock pickups aren’t really a proper definition of modern. The neck is my favorite Les Paul neck I own. (I have a 50s, 60s, and a Les Paul Custom). As far as the after burner option (tone up bridge). It is more helpful when you have something with much more gain. It by passes bridge tone and volume (split still works). You can hear all the highs in the pickup. A great way to use it: double tracking guitars. One take tone knob down. The double track tone up. Spread them left and right listen how much wider it seems. 😁
I have a Modern Standard with same pu/pu switching. Bypass is for straight to bridge wide open. So go middle posit., tap both, pull phase - got the thin jangly/funky tone, maybe roll off some to lower the screech - great for certain rhythm parts- now for a lead- just pull the bridge tone and skip twisting and pushing, full roar. Push to go right back to to rhythm- one motion, prolly more for live to be efficient. If you twist 'em all and it's still feeding back, you know which one to slap. ♫
Agnesi once described the bypass switch as flamethrower lead mode. You're in some oddball multi knob combo for the rhythm part (coil tapped neck, maybe) then up comes the solo. You don't want to faff with multiple knobs, you just want to one hit the flamethrower button to get into lead mode.
It seemed a bit contrived, like "we have a spare push pull, what can we do with it" kinda thing, but that was the gist of his rationale. 🤷
I have an Epiphone SG Modern the asymmetric neck just feels right in my hand better than everything else I tried in that rough price range, the out-of-phase sound ala Peter Green is pretty special even on Epi’s ProBuckers.
Great review! Very thorough and I appreciated both the hardware and playability insight! Practical overview…
Nice,I would love to play one
Beautiful guitar
Major win with the modern heel carve. I tried one at GC and fell in love. I probably like it more than the Axcess heel. The traditional LP heel is always going to be a non starter for me. No matter how nice the guitar is.
Also weight relief is a must. Im not buying a 10lb guitar
"pull the button...see if you like the sound" LOL , have had one of these for almost 2 years and am still figuring out all the push-pull knobs!! I play on the heavier side of things but this thing is very to my liking in other settings as well (jazz-funk, indie rock).... as always thanks for the great video and break-down - appreciate it!
Does anyone else not like his riffs but like the commentary?
That's a Player!
I love the Middle Phase Flip!
I have a 2016 HP Standard with locking tuners installed. The Modern is lacking the titanium nut and insanely flamed top, but very similar. One thing mine does not have is the option to pull the tone and have the bridge at full. That would allow you to have your tones and volumes and coil split/tap wherever you want and then get a boost from full bridge humbucker for a solo and then go back to your other settings. All the options this gives is very similar to the flexibility of my Jaguar, and I like that.
15 minutes of slightly altering the wiring will give you all the lacking desired effects that you mentioned. Or you can just pull the circuit board and put in the harness of your choosing. Any wiring design you choose is still a win win win since the axe is top quality with a plek'd ebony compound radius fretboard with real M.O.P. inlays, and all for under 5k, which is what you're going to dish out for any other Gibson with real mop and an ebony board.🙂
And it has an ebony fretboard and real MOP inlays---AWESOME guitar!
Love that sound and color. Nothing wrong with a modern Les Paul. They need some flat out factory metal models!! C'mone 50K!!
I agree. I’d love to see a run of factory metal Les Pauls. Gnarly dark and ominous color schemes, dark hardware, locking bar nut, set of EMGs or similar, etc.
Picked up a Fender strat ultra i love and next up is gonna be one of these to Upgrade my 2017 Gibson tribute which is also pretty nice guitar.
Very nice guitar, Im surprised the modern doesnt have the belly cut like the Muse. Either way a very nice guitar! Thanks for showcasing!
Just ordered the 2023 Les Paul Classic limited edition in Chicago Blue, 4th July sale, open box . seven hundred fifty bucks off!
A bypass or The 'bypass all' switch is designed for Lead Guitar imo. It would bypass all potentiometers like, tone & volume and rhythm switch-select too, doing this will eliminate all signal attenuation loss that drops (measured in decibels) traveling through those different control pots (potentiometers) and that's the reason it's loudest in that mode.
I think this mode is designed for a whaling Lead Solo.🎸
In that mode it would be the exact same configuration as my1989 Gibson SG -Single. It has one P90 at the neck and 26 frets with a thin neck. It's made for fast leads. Thanks for this demo!
I also love the black gothic case. I wish all my guitars had came in one just like it.🙂 Btw, not having fret nibs makes it easier to refret.
Absolute masterpiece
Down here in "Cowboy Land". That made me laugh :) Great review as always!
I get the option paralysis thing. Sometimes a single pickup with a volume knob is just easier.
Yep
Thanks for this fantastic review!!!
I honestly like the regular les paul with no modern configs. I have a 2016 Standard HP which has the dip switch for multiple tone posibilities but non of its sound sounded like a Gibson Les Paul. The guitar looks stunning but that just it.
Just bought the same guitar today and I can’t wait for it to be delivered. This will be my very first Gibson.
Congrats and enjoy! Thanks for watching
She is a beauty ! Wow... I would have to play it. See how it feels in my hand... Sound to.
What a cool one!
Have the Epiphone version it's a beauty it in my top 5
Good looking guitar.......
I want a "Cloud 9" CS reissue but with the '60's neck profile. :D
Now thats what an ELECTRIC GUITAR should sound like. Fantastic
Nice piece, I have the Caribbean fade Epiphone ang really like it. I just need to replace the pickup with some Tonerider alnico 2 classics. Then it will be close to perfect.
Also has a ebony board. Love mine. I swapped out the clear knobs for black speed knobs.
Did you have a problem getting the knobs off? I have one damaged knob that I need to replace, and have read horror stories of the shaft being pulled completely out, when removing the knob.
I would do that as well. The clear knobs look a bit…poofy.
In this price range, there is no excuse for buzzing noise, which is audible even on mid gain. And, as was visible during remove of pickup and open of pot cavity, there is no shielding. Even half-priced instruments are properly shielded!
I considered a Gibson Les Paul Modern, but ended up with a Gibson Traditional Pro V. You should review the Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro V.
Epiphone modern figured Sgs and les Paul's also graph Tech Nut and Grover roto matic 18:1 Locking Tuners..
Moderns have ebody fretboards, not rosewood. I love mine, even tho I refinished it in silverburst, which is my favorite finish of all time. And I love the modern specs, like the heel carve, locking tuners and the radius. I wish it had bigger frets tho.
Yes it was my mistake on ebony - you are correct. I love Silverburst nice choice! Thanks for watching
How much was the refinish? And where did you get it done? I dream of a LP modern in full olive drab
@@lewiss3824 I refinished it in a local custom shop from my country. If I remember correctly I payed $350 USD
That translucent cherry Les Paul on the wall looks very much like my new Classic. Hmmm...That Modern is very cool. That Pelham blue is beautiful, too. I want an SG in that color. I noticed you have a Charvel on the rack. Are you going to do a demo on it, here soon?
I wish it was painted front, back, with matching headstock.
I like the keystone tuner buttons, too bad they're Grovers instead of Schallers, but Gibson hasn't used many Schallers since the early 80s. I like the Nashville TOM bridge and I'm really happy to see that it has properly done fretwork without plastic nibs. I do NOT like asymmetrical neck shapes. The compound radius is nice but it should be 12 to 16 inch radius, not 10 to 16. Weight relief does not bother me. I like having extra switching options via push-pulls. So I like it....but I think the asymmetrical neck might be a deal breaker for me.
Id reccomend trying one to see how it feels, i like the asymmetrical neck on this particular model
Isn’t the Epiphone version with a 12-16 spec?
Im gonna love hearing you jamming in a 3 Pickup les paul👌
Bridge pickup hot wired to the output Jack
Hello and best regards
I have a technical question:
What is the actual size of the neck at the 1st fret and at the 12th fret❓
I'm asking because The Trogly's Guitars Show shows the specifications of this model and the measurements differ significantly!
How to decide this❓
Master Bypass = Balls to the Walls.
My volume pot knob has broken on mine and the same knobs are impossible to find online with clear writing. I think I might have to change them for clear top hats with black numbers on
did you contact gibson repair and restoration?
Nice. But I just played a Heritage the other day and have seen the light.
Moderns have ebony boards btw, nice video!
100% correct, too focused on the other newer details, missed the obvious. Thanks for watching!
Good vid, I really enjoy this series. The Moderns come with ebony fb tho, just sayin' :)
You are 100% right...that explains the nice streak that I nearly described as ebony-like. I can be be 9/10 and the 1/10 haunts me lol. Thanks for watching
I don’t know whether to go for this or a standard 60s. Help!
I know it's not a zZounds guitar, but I think the Trad Pro V is a closer comparison to the modern than the Classic. Same neck, locking Grover's, but Tradbuckers. Also, the HP electronics to choose spit/tap and hi-pass filter.
Not a ZZounds guitar? What do you mean?
@@lyric.kayden the Trad Pro V is a Guitar Center/Musician's Friend exclusive.
Fire!!!!! Im hearing you jamming and i am loving it!! Is it some Song allready publishe dor are you jamming around??
I just cant stop returning here, just to hear that tasty jam. Powleaaaasseeee do an entire vídeo jamming on The regitry. You have some unique talent to bring something into this planet. Do consider it either with the same guitar or with 3 Pickup LP 👌
Damn that's pretty!
Love the channel and the concept of reviewing guitars to help your viewers, make an educated purchase. I am interested in a Gibson Les Paul R0. I’m not into the Murphy relict guitars but rather as pristine as possible. Where can I find information on this model? When were its best years? Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Gibson Custom has a couple versions of the R0, but it sounds like you want the "Gibson Custom 1960 Les Paul Standard Reissue" which will have a VOS (vintage original spec) finish which is a very light aging on the hardware, non Murphy lab. The VOS is very subtle. Beautiful guitar with main feature is the slimmer 1960 neck instead of 50s or 59 profile
@@PlayandTradeGuitars Thanks John! Hey, Does Gibson make the R0 without aged hardware? I guess I could call them but im asking here first. :-) Thanks man!
I literally just looked at this guitar online
Nice! Thanks for watching. If you end up buying, check it out here. We've got your back!

A question please:
Les Paul played jazz with the classic model.
Is the LP-Moders capable for this aswell? And really on par with the '50's one?
All black plastics or all clear plastics. Not really crazy about the combo. Pretty color with the back.
i think i'm going to pull the trigger on a LP R9 Murphy Lab Ultra light Aged.
Do it! It was in a class all it's own...you can watch our demo. Check it out here: www.zzounds.com/a--3979398/item--GIBLPR59UL
We hope you'll use our link so we can give you a shout out! Enjoy and thanks for watching
@@PlayandTradeGuitars can you tell me the difference the between the $7499 and $8499? I real like Factory Burst (Cherry) one. Is the color the $1000 difference?
The price differences come from the level of aging - Ultra Light is $7499, and "Light" is $8499. I actually prefer the Ultra Light but it's a personal preference of course
Decent riffing for on the spot. This guy can play…
I’m pretty sure the coil tap is p90 sound I have this guitar Maybe I’m wrong.
It's odd that "tapped" sounds darker on the video. It should be the other way around.
I have one in burgundy. 2019 model. I try hundreds of different guitars and haven’t found a better playing or sounding one yet. She is by far the best les Paul I have ever played or owned. I’m surprised that Gibson has more expensive models for sale. They must rely on fame for their fortune. What is popular with the kiddies lol
If it is that heavy why not dry it in the kiln?
🤣@4:53 Love it!!
Nice review guys, but isn't the fretboard EBONY? At least that's what was given on the Gibson website specs when I bought my LP Modern. Good job on pointing out the actually real mother of pearl inlays.
Yes correct - it is ebony, thanks for watching!
Yes correct - it is ebony, thanks for watching!
I guess anything under 10lbs is considered a win when it comes to weight releiving a Les Paul. Henry J got these right, certainly an underrated model.
Weight relieve = sound relieve (imoho)
will you do a comparison to the same epiphone version for $700 ?
I think I want to buy a real 1974 Black Custom Les Paul (my birth year). There are some things that I am afraid of (concerning a 50 year old guitar...and a guy about to turn 50).
1 The frets back then on customs were low profile....is it better to get one that has had a nice refret job with more modern frets?...I get minty new would be best but its costly.
2 Truss rod not over adjusted, room for adjustment...I get that....but it still scares me on something that old.
3 Binding not separating from the fretboard....my 3rd worry.
I guess its all about the neck (duh) and I hate the idea of buying something expensive and old when the best examples would have to be bought over the internet.
ARGH!....there's always the custom shop.
I also am having a desire to buy mid 90's and early (very early) 2000s. I like the 60's neck so I would want to buy what they called "Classic" (not standard) at the time and they had a 1960 on the pickguard. It's probably my age, I recall those on the shelves back when my band was gigging and I always wanted one.
NOTHING beats my 2018 custom shop "R0" though in my mind...best guitar I have ever played and it has poisoned me to everything else that is sub-par.
apology about jumping all around everyone, I would like opinions though on buying a 1974 custom and the nightmare it could be if done without being smart.
I have this guitar, i'm actually in love with it. I'll keep it for life. For FUCKING LIFE YOU HEAR ME!!! hehe
Since the body has less weight... does it have neck dive or balance at less of an angle compared to a heavier lp? Oh wait - saw it's 4.2 kg ... nevermind!
I really do love this guitar. It’s overpriced and hell. But it’s gorgeous.
Very overpriced
When you consider the quality of wood, the pleking, the compound radius neck with the EBONY fretboard and REAL m.o.p. inlays you're actually getting an UNDERPRICED Gibson Les Paul. The only other Lesters you're going to find with all those attributes are in the $4k+ range.
@@msaintpc needs ss frets tho
The radius is 12 to 16 not 10 to 16.
At $3k you are getting into PRS 💰
That's a Ebony fret board - not rosewood
100% Correct, thanks for watching!
You should have measured the bridge radius. If the fretboard taper is 10"-16" then the bridge radius should be 19". Otherwise, you're not getting any benefit if they are just using the standard TOM bridge with the standard 12" radius.
Beautiful instrument. My bank account says sorry, unfortunately.
These have a 12-16 radius, not 10-16
Locking tuners should be a standard feature in all guitars above 1,000 bucks.
Yep. Just restrung my Lp classic today and of course got my finger stabbed by the G string shard.
No frett nibbs makes trading problematic with China making bootleg versions. Main way to tell if chibson or not. Are those stainless steel fretts?
The sound was unimpressive. Didn't sound like a Les Paul. Maybe it was because of the low volume or small amp. If you'd cranked it up and put it through a Marshall, I might have been able to tell if it sounded any good.
The Gibson USA Slash guitars have plastic fret inlays....kinda lame
I just subscribed this is my dream guitar 🛐🕎✝️☪️☯️☸️🕉️✡️🔯🙏🏻📿🧘🏻
When your done reviewing the guitars do you sell them? If so do you have a website
Gibson's "weight relief" has nothing to do with making the guitar lighter. Its purpose is to enable Gibson to use cheaper (i.e. heavier) grades of mahogany for the body. This particular instruments weight just confirms this. Any Gibson "design" innovation is intended to save them money. (no fret nibs, a three piece body on this model, non-coil tapped pickups (the "single coil" and "out of phase" are achieved by additional capacitors in the circuitry, not an actual coil tap in the pickup). But I see that the price is still "premium" Gibson. 🙄
The Epiphone versions are King 🤴
Except they're made in China, and QC sucks.
@@AdoreYouInAshXI mine was made beautifully
Well no but ok
Wrong
Uhhh no
If only this guitar came in burst colors!
I predict this guitar is going to be extremely sought after in 10-15 years. And I have one. hehe
Didnt really enjoy the the tones of this guitar
