Unpopular opinion but I don't really like Independence Day that much. I think its first half is great but it's downhill from there. Not being American, the whole premise of America saves the world on their own national day is a bit eye-rolling and I really struggled with the idea that the aliens' security was so bad that they couldn't pick up that they were being infiltrated by humans in a 50 year old plane. If you can't suspend disbelief the movie is not going to work for you.

Okay, I need to watch Independence Day and Time after Time real soon. Also, the last part where you hinted at some more 'lists' has made my eyes light up!
My favourite science fiction movies would be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Arrival, The Truman Show, Snowpiercer and would include the South Korean movies The Call and Before We Vanish.

Respect for picking Spy Who Shagged Me. Dated now sure but absolutely hilarious

Surely the grubbiness of Alien was a conscious design choice. Space travel has become a mundane part of life and the characters are just average working stiffs put in a situation they aren't prepared for. It's why I prefer it to the sequel, which is a more conventional sci-fi setup.

Simple answer, the crew in alien, are NOT astronauts, they are truckers who work on a spaceship, big difference.

Favorite Kirk moment in Star Trek comes from the Wrath of Khan. Kirk biting the apple and saying, with a smile as he defies fate for the millionth time, "I don't like to lose." Pitch perfect for the character and magnificiently acted by Shatner.

My personal #1 pick may not be the best sci-fi movie not adapted from books, likely not by a long shot, but it's my favorite. Spike Jonze's Her.
Maybe it's a film bro choice, I wouldn't know, but I love that one. So many great bits and never fails to make me cry and I think that it's a pretty prescient look at the way people are beginning to interact with certain AI. Can't get enough of that movie.
    My list:
10: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
    9: Mad Max: Fury Road
    8: Monsters Inc.
    7:The Matrix
    6:RoboCop
    5:Wall-E
    4: 28 Days Later
    3:Return of the Living Dead
    2:Under The Skin (sorry)
    1:Her

Correct me if wrong but i believe neither of these were based on books:
    -12 Monkeys.
    -Event Horizon.
    -District 9.
    -Gattaca.
    -THX1138.
Maybe not many people liked them but I enjoyed them a good deal

I enjoyed both your lists. Aliens is one of my favorite movies of all time. I haven’t seen Sunshine or Time After Time. I’ll definitely give them a look. I still like the first Predator more than the second one. One thing I did like about Predator 2 was that it reminded me of first Dark Horse Predator comic. Looking forward to your next list. Perhaps a top ten Sci-Fi TV series?

Silent Running is a great movie - Bruce Dern gets a break from bad guy duties for a change. I saw Silent Running and Dark Star in a double feature back in 1974 - that was good value. I would also include The Andromeda Strain ( 1971) . In case you're wondering I have been to the movies since 70's !

E.T. is one of the worst movies ever made. Back in 1982, when I was a lad, my friends and I made a trip to the local cinema. We hadn't decided beforehand what we were going to see, rather that we would find out what was playing and figure it out when we got there. My interest was instantly sparked by The Wrath of Khan, which I hadn't yet seen, but I was outvoted, so we ended up watching E.T. It's still the most horrible moviegoing experience I've ever had.

The Fifth Element, which borrowed a lot from Jodorosky/Moebius' The Incal isn't my favorite Besson film, in fact I can't rewatch it. The Big Blue, The Professional, and Le Femme Nikita, on the other hand, I can easily return to. Great trilogy. When I saw Claire Denis' High Life science fiction film starring Juliette Binoche and Robert Pattinson, I thought about Silent Running and Tarkovsky's Solaris. The latter is a masterpiece and one of my favorite movies of all time. Silent Running I saw as a kid in the 70's and remains and wonderfully painful film to rewatch. High Life, like all Clair's films, I found deeply engaging. Of course, she trained under Wim Wenders, whose Wings of Desire, even though it isn't a science fiction film, does transport you into another world. I would include Brazil, Time Bandits, and Chris Marker's Le Jetee on this list.
