Not only is he an awesome father, he was an awesome support system to his friends before their passing and the fact that he refused to allow his parents to tarnish their memory in his child's eye, is beyond commendable.
It's also very clear that his friends did a great job in his son's formative years. Because he's not only smart, but seems to be very well adjusted based on what little information we have.

NTA, if they only love and want to lavish him now that they know he's your blood, they are terrible parents and grandparents to begin with.

I think the last point is pretty valid and should be shared with the sisters... I mean, will they willingly allow their kids to visit OP if they know beforehand that he'll call his sisters and BILs nasty names for 5 years?

He definetly should have told them.

Why? Like OP said it shouldn't matter he adopted "his" son from that point on they should have been grandparents.
And homophobia is outdated, gramps and granny should have been better.

@@CurliFox than they kinda suck if you're only concerned and reason for loving your grandchildren is if it Shares 1/4 of your DNA your a prick add the homophobia and OP is 100% in the right.

I think his fear is valid. Imagine you're 12, lost both your parents, and you get to hear from a bitty old lady how your mothers were harlots, tramps, and even worse names....
Now imagine your dad had the ability to protect you from that... why would a loving father not take that option?
