This is just superb, been searching for "how to teach children to read music notes" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Foonlant Dumbstruck Formula - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is an awesome one of a kind guide for discovering how to teach your child to read music notes minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my co-worker got amazing success with it.
I have a sheet music for Whitney Houston’s song I will always love you for alto saxophone. Can you help me learn and read please
@@micheleo5665 do you want a lesson? www.getyoursaxtogether.com/teaching
@@vicenteampiez3231 interesting!
I’m starting to play sax again, and I didn’t realize how much I’ve forgotten about sheet music because it’s been years since I played. This was super helpful to get a refresher of all of the basics!
Brilliant, glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your support and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J:-)
Same here. I’m picking up the sax after 53 years.
5 months later, how has it been?

Thank you I have band tomorrow at school and for the past two band practices I literally was pretending to play the saxophone 😂
That’s great!
Actually a good clear explanation - that made more sense that it did back in 5 year at secondary school !
Russell Guyver - thanks! 👍🏻
this is genuinely the best beginner video i’ve EVER seen for reading music
Oh, great! Thanks 🙏🏻
the sense of humor is just fantastic, very efficient approach i imagined for a second being in his music class, i subscribed before the video could end
JD MAKA - thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching. 🙏🏻
this is great for me! thank you! im just getting back into sax after ~5 years of being in active, its so refreshing :)
Great to hear!
Great clear and concise lesson. Perfect for everyone wanting to start reading music or anyone wanting a quick music theory refresher. 👍🏻
Greg's Bass Shed - thanks for the comment. Much appreciated!!
I know this video is 3 years old, so this comment may not be seen, but I truly appreciate this video! Not only was it very helpful, but also entertaining! I greatly enjoyed the edits and subscribed, I hope to see more content! Thank you for this video and I hope you're having a great day! :)
Glad it helped!
This is a great starter for anyone that doesn’t read music and is done in a very easy to understand way too .... I learned how to read music a very traditional way when I started playing the clarinet over 40 years ago and I found it really rough at the start ..... I just wish I had this type of advice and lesson to help me back then ..... it was Thurston’s Clarinet method that was my starter and intermediate tutor and I still have it today .... covered in pencil marks of course !!!
PS, keep up the excellent work on the channel as I do love learning about the greatest Sax players and their solos and parts like the monster Pink Floyd you attacked recently which is one of my fave Floyd tunes and stoked that you did the full transcription!!! Can’t wait to see who & what you have in store next !
J:-)
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J:-)
Fantastic thanks! I used to play flute 10 years ago but eager to get back into the music world and start learning sax. This has really motivated me!
Cool. Enjoy!
I really appreciate all of your videos. Thank you so much I needed a major refresher. It's been 18 years since I played a alto. I finally went on a whim and bought one with no memory whatsoever of what im doing. Your videos are a great help thank you so much !
You’re very welcome! 🙏🏻
This is a great video, I just started to play an alto saxophone and I don't know how to read notes. This is very helpful, I am looking forward for the next lessons.
Ann Margareth Teologo - cool. More great stuff coming up! 👍🏻
hows it going
loved the simplicity of how you explained things. Thank you so much for this video! By the way, regarding the 8th note. For Americans, we might call that a quarter note with a squiggly tail at the end.
🤣
I knew all the content here, but it was great fun and a really useful way to learn the basics. I grew up with crotchets etc, and didn't know about the American names - brilliant and so logical - thanks for posting these vids, they are great.
Anytime Paul. 👍🏻
If I'm not mistaken you played with Tim delux we all love sax from 2001 PS as a visual learner this is great.
I sure did! I’ve emailed you.
Thanks 😊 .. your lessons are AWESOME. 💯❤💯
Aha! Learning to read music now! Love it. ❤️
Keep up with the awesome lessons! My 10 yr old son is learning alto sax at school n ur videos really help me help him practice! Thanks
Nou Vang - oh brilliant! Keep it up! 👍🏻
Wonderful - Thank you I am using your videos for Music class for Homeschool. PEACE
Enjoy!
I know this video was posted years ago but thanks a lot!I'm doing band next year and last time I tried I couldn't read the notes. This video is pretty helpful!
Well, reading music has been the same for hundreds of years I guess, what's a year between friends? lol Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J😊
That was amazing. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
THANK YOU SOMUCH ITS LITERALLY SAVE MY LIFE MADE MY DAY HELPED ME A LOT AND YOUR EXPLANATION IS THE CLEAREST ONE I EVER SEEN THANK YOUUUU😭😭😭😭😭
I'm glad this helped. Good luck and keep enjoying your music!
Thank you so much brother🙏
Thanks Christine!
I will get a sax tomorrow but I need to learn how to read notes. This video was extremely helpful but it is only 1 episode. Will there be more episodes of learning notes? (like sharp notes or anything you say in the video “that is for another day”) Thanks!
You're right actually Arda, I never did do that follow up video! lol I'll add it to my list! I'm sure there's loads of other vids on youtube that will answer your questions in the meantime?
I’m pretty sure there is but your teaching techniques are absolutely better than any other channel. I will stay tuned for follow up for your series!
Arda Obayonay aw shucks! Thanks!
One thing I self discovered is that when it comes to counting out the notes with "! e and a," ect... there is a time difference in how long it takes to say "e" and "and." How ever long it takes to say wither phrase is exactly know long you should play the note. I used to take private lessons from Mindi Abair before she became famous and there was something about how she taught that made everything make sense when she re-taught me the "1 e and a's" from my high school days.
Makes sense.
Awesome🥴
Thanks!
I learned Every good boy does fine
😂
Every gangsta B deserves friends ♥
👍
Thank you.. I been playing the sax for almost 2 years but it’s been awhile since I don’t play because of quarantine and I forgot how to read the notes 😭
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm a wedding DJ, I'm luck enough to be able to listen to stuff and play the tune after a little on the piano (one handed only though)
It meant I could have fun jamming to my fave tunes.
I am increasingly booking a DJ and sax package, and the players I work with are from £250 ph I'm picking up a saxophone on Wednesday and I'm just so eager to learn to read sheet music as I've never found someone to explain it in a way that I just get.
I'm pinning the whole beginner session on so when I get home Wednesday evening I can get up and running right away!
Awesome! Have fun
OMG THANK YOU!!! I just started and everyone's being so complicated.
🤣 You’re welcome!
Mary had a little lamb was the first thing I was taught on the topic of reading music when learning how to play bass guitar
🐏
Thank you so much! I've recently bought a Yamaha Yas 280 and very new to sax, I'm looking forward to learning on this channel and improving. Ps has anyone ever told you that you kinda look like Ewan McGregor without a beard. 😂
😂 I’ll definitely take that… I’ve always wanted to be Obi Wan Kenobi!
I couldn't understand even with books ur expert level awesome subscribing now
Thanks 🙏🏻
Hi, Was way to fast for me, I'm not able to read that fast.
Have not played my alto in like 7 years would refresher
Try this czcams.com/video/8BFWtdcS8W4/video.html
Great lesson...
Quick question, how will someone be able to identify eight notes, quarter notes etc when transcribing or trying to score a song
Good question! That's just experience I'm afraid! Eeek!
Very clear explanation! Looking forward to more informative videos just like this. Keep up the good work sir! 👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾🙌🏾
Thanks! 🙏
You ar so cool
thanks!
I always remembered "EGBDF" because my music teacher bought a fish and named it "EGBDF" to help us remember!
That's hilarious!
Hello!!! Enjoying so much the videos. Will buy you 3 coffees on my next paycheck. Btw is there a cheat sheet with the notes and the finger positions, like most of them for alto sax?
Hi Eugenio, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. There is no cheat sheet yet, but one will be coming in the near future. You can find many online though if you search through google. ;-)
@@GetYourSaxTogether thanks!!! Looking fwd!!!
@@xiuhtecuhtli 😊
I had no clue the English had foreign names for all the notes (whole notes, half notes, etc.). They sound like some magical trinkets (or quidditch terms) from Harry Potter.
I LOVE this. favourite comment of the day! I'd rather have your system, but I guess minims and crochets have their charm. "Harry Potter has caught the Crochet and won the game!" lol
In my school we made it Every Good Boy Deserves Fanta
😆
Every Good Boy Deserves Father
If you like!
For my eyes to see all of the markings, and my mouth and fingers to automatically play them seems almost impossible. Maybe my brain does not have the necessary whatevers to do this. Just bought a sax and want to play Pink Floyd's "Us and Them".
brewzky - yeh it feels like brain surgery, but you’ll get used to it fast! I’ll put the Floyd track on my list. 👍🏻
@@GetYourSaxTogether Thanks I'll keep plugging away. Can't wait to get a little progress. Gato Barbieri Europa here I come.
brewzky 🤘🏻
i am a complete beginner to sheet music but why are there 2 e's and f's?
They’re in different octaves. There’s only 7 note letter names and those same notes can be in higher or lower octaves.
Wait is there a second part...?
Aha! That's a good point actually. Don't think I ever got round to the second part. you mean about dynamics etc?
Tbh I'm sure this helped alot of people
But i don't understand anything
Haven't played in 5 years and this is my Consequence lol
🤣
@@GetYourSaxTogether maybe if i watch over and over again i might get a thing or two lol
is alto sax notes and tenor sax notes same
you finger them the same, yes, and they all have the same names, yes, but they sound at different pitches.
@@GetYourSaxTogether thank you sir
i have never heard stave before
You learn something new every day!
Who else is watching is this is 2022?
Also another way to remember the notes is "every good burger deserves fries"
Gosh - you’re 100% right. I just grew up on that genderist and sexist phrase and regurgitated it. Too late to correct THIS video, but I’m totally using your burger phrase from now on. Thanks for, quite rightly, calling me out. 😏
EVERY GOOD BOY DOES FINE. AND FACE!
👍
It's not a "rhyme" it's a mnemonic.
jim smith - ah! Thanks Jim! You’re quite right. Good job I’m a saxophonist and not a English teacher! 😂
*Edward bloom?!?!*
🤔
I still don’t get it I just need side by side help🤦🏽♂️
Maybe find a music teacher?
So from G with left hand, to a Fortnite jam--- lost this beginner in a big way---
That’s a pretty big step up! 😬
I hate "Mary had a little lamb", lamest tune ever.
But otherwise, excellent thank you!
you're welcome. I figured flight of the bumble bee might be a bit too much information for people learned music! lol
British person here, Agreed:
The note names make no sense.
🤣
really for beginner ?? ....... seem like recognize Add.Math symbols .............................. xDD
Yeh, kinda!
This did not help 😐
Sorry to hear that - any particular reason why?
trash do not recommend
Thanks for the comment, and sorry to hear that. What didn't you like about it? J:-)
Why are you so mean???😡😡😡
