    This motor had the cooling and the oiling to stay wound up while loaded and pull any hill you wanted. As long as there was a gas station at the top of every grade you were good to go.

    I was a Chevy man for 30 years. My wife found a good deal on a 2001 F250 XLT Super Duty 4X4 with 136K miles for 29th wedding anniversary present. That V!0 is a really strong motor. Good to know it can haul up a long 6% grade. I have a 29ft 5th wheel camper and I have as yet to haul it anywhere. Anyway, good video and thanks for posting it.

    For those not familiar with where he is towing, it's in Utah on I-80 coming out of Salt Lake City and heading up Park City. Parley's Summit is a steep mountain pass, probably the steepest in the whole state. My Ram Hemi pulling my old boat would run up it in 2nd gear and barely hold 50-55 mph. It's no joke. The only pass I've pulled that is tougher is probably in Colorado by the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 outside of Denver. Coming down these passes you will definitely heat up your brakes.

    • @metrawatt
      @metrawatt Před 2 lety +4

      Parleys summit is no joke. I drove a 35 year old Dodge class A RV cross country twice and this climb was the hardest one. We pulled it in 2nd gear at ~35 mph. I think we kicked down into 1st at a couple spots.

    • @sdvten
      @sdvten Před 2 lety +1

      Whats the elevation there?

    • @Long-nd8bq
      @Long-nd8bq Před 2 lety +3

      @@sdvten you climb from 4200 ft in SLC to 7,120 ft going up this canyon. 3000 ft gain in elevation on a steep grade. Going up is a struggle for most cars and especially if you're towing. Going down is scary in the winter because you have to be careful for ice and you gain speed if you aren't on the brakes. If you commute this daily you go through brake pads and rotors very quickly.

    • @sdvten
      @sdvten Před 2 lety +4

Only thing id like it is to have one more gear so that the highway rpms arent as high to get better gas mileage, though i got 14.9 going 73 from kansas to Arkansas (unloaded ofcourse), but the 03's had that. I think of the V10 as more of a weekend warrior and "Roughly 100 miles per week". I love 12V cummins as well. People that hate each other over stuff is a bad time. They literally think it's Chevy versus Ford versus Dodge. Everyone has a "Buddy" with more power, better exhaust, faster...fuck all that shit. I am a work truck type a truck guy and in my opinion, Ford and Dodge is right there. The Super Duty with V10 is damn heavy as well.

I felt rotten selling it, but for the following 18 months or so I still kept seeing it. But, a V-10 in something lighter than a Super Duty would seem even more Tqy. Same transmission as well. I'm 100% sure it's been done before. I would easily buy another 5.4 as long as it's not the 3 valve versions.

    Oil pressure is fine, temperature is fine, speed is too high! In the gear shift in the end of the handle is rotten that's the button you press when your climbing a mountain especially if you're towing something. It will shift down at the same time increase the RPMs but you must slow down that's just the way it is!! Nothing wrong with the motor transmission and rear end the problem is the driver.

    • @justinpeterson8754
      @justinpeterson8754  Před 5 lety +11

      What problem are you talking about? The truck performed the way it was supposed in those conditions. The button at the end of the shifter is the overdrive button. The truck was in second gear throughout the entire video, so pushing the button wouldn’t have made a difference.

    • @eldridge201
      @eldridge201 Před 5 lety +8

      Daniel Smyth, you obviously don’t know really anything about vehicles or more specifically towing with them. Although important in the “general operation” of an engine and ALSO IMPORTANT when towing something, the oil pressure and coolant or engine temperature have nothing to do with performance when towing something.
      Your comment about “speed is too high” doesn’t make any sense. If you can tow something 100 or 140 mph, then so be it. (Although I’m not suggesting to do this).
      You’re simply oblivious and ignorant to the fact that these model of vehicles only have a 4 speed transmission (as opposed to the newer models with 6 and 8 speed transmissions) and as such, anyone with any knowledge or experience with towing would know that this vehicle was towing just fine and was in the correct gear which was 2nd as the driver mentioned. You don’t need to press the button at the end of the shifter to tow something. The vehicle will shift in and out of 3rd or overdrive as needed regardless of if the overdrive on/off button at the end of the shift handle has been pressed or not. All that does is just ensure that the vehicle will not “search” for overdrive (constantly going in and out of overdrive and eventually cause transmission issues) if you’re towing something lighter or are on a more flat length of road or have no wind and so on. In the right scenarios or road and weather conditions, you could haul a very heavy load and have the transmission constantly doing this “searching” situation (especially if the cruise is set at usually around 55 to 65 depending on load) and it would eventually lead to transmission failure.
      He was simply at full throttle (which is totally fine for a vehicle if it’s maintained and setup properly) and trying to get up a hill with something pulled behind his vehicle. He was doing everything right.
      I could go on but I will just leave it at that for now. Please don’t comment when you don’t know what you’re talking about and do some research online.

      Thank you for your detailed reply it was very informative. You're right in that I'm not used to the modern technology, my Mountain driving has been limited to stick shift and smaller engines nevertheless a heavy load and higher speed stability is critical. Kitchen and oil slick or an ice patch, even a boat falling off of a vehicle ahead of you could cause serious if not fatal damage. Running at Full Throttle of a mountain I would never do it no matter what Ray guy was driving. Not only waste fuel Dad's stress to the entire Drive Line. I've been driving since I was 14 and I'm 70 now so don't take an attitude. I guess that's what it took to get a good answer though. Thank you.

      4.10 gearing works even better. It pulls our 6500 lb camper real well. I think the ideal combination for V10 in F250/350 would be 4.30s with the six speed transmission.

      The truck went into 2nd gear on its own. What would manually turning off overdrive have changed?

      @@themaritimegirl true..Turning OD off only locks the transmission out of fourth gear. Truck will gear between 1,2 and 3 as needed.
