- to start 2024 off right I wanted to go through things that I’ve been loving over the last couple of years but haven’t had the chance to make yet. My intention for this year is to end up with things that are true to my style and that I will get a lot of wear out of for years to come. I want to make generally more practical items suitable for my everyday life and be more experimental with my skills to get out of my comfort zone a little more. i am so so excited to start on the first few projects and see where the year takes me, so many exciting things to come :'))))

If anyone is confused about what they want to make because they are unsure about their style, I would recommend the Seamwork podcast, and their 4 part style workshop series. Even though they are focused on sewing, they have helped me SO much to the point where I am confidently intentional about what I buy and want to make, and I actually wear the things I buy and make. I just wanted to share that, because last year I had a similar experience where I was learning about my style and realizing how I could make things slower and more intentionally and have a more thoughtful design process! I love watching your videos 💃
i relate to this so much! although i am a different type of maker (i mostly hand knit with a pattern) i had this problem at the beginning where i would knit something in a bright color or something trendy (to keep me interested) and i never wanted to wear it! color work and texture knits have been a lifesaver, i use natural shades but i have so much fun knitting anyway because there is so much going on! i loved knitting the storm sweater and moby sweater by petite knit and i highly recommend!
Suchhhh a big learning curve! But I don’t regret it, I think following those trends taught me what I do and don’t like so I can now really hone in on that! I’m so glad you’ve had a similar experience and I can’t wait to do more colour and texture work
These were some delightfully intriguing musings Aver! I actually only Tunisian crochet and loom knit - not for lack of skill or trying crochet and knit , but rather because these mediums are relatively popularly unexplored in relation to their counterparts. My granny taught me to loom knit as a child so I carry on with it in her honor and Tunisian crochet is so soothing, producing clean graph like squares in simple I am obsessed with ; so I like to mix the arts together for panels, clothes, tapestries, accessories, you name it! The patterns or ideas found on YT community lean more towards traditional so I always find myself designing and free-handing modern projects as an exciting challenge and I feel like my own trailblazer in a way. Tunisian crochet has some gorgeous stitches like Lattice - which I find stretchier than TSS , the TKS a gorgeous thick stockinette replicant, the darling Tunisian Lace/Shell stitch , Tunisian Mesh stitch (all learned via TL Yarn crafts) , there is an amazing Tunisian Hi Low Wave Stitch by Yarn Stitch Color, as well as the Entrelac & Tunisian Flat Short Row Circle by Ellen Gormley Crochet (more hexagonal, interesting because it can be split apart into other geometry and makes perfect donut pillows, collars, flowers whatever your imagination desires). I too would like to try my hand at cables in this way :) Things to note, it uses a bit more yarn than standard crochet. My favorite hooks are personally the metal 14inch versions of 3.5mm , 5 -5.5mm , 6.5 mm, 8mm and 10mm . I’ve been eyeing cabled for bigger projects but I can get away with an afghan loom for now. it I found when using acrylic the length of the chain is always a bit longer than what the foundation row ends up being so I account for that in calculations; with cotton, I’ve noticed this doesn’t happen as much. This was a bit long but I hope it helped, It will be inspiring to see your creativity , best of luck on all these great projects this year!

The trend thing is so real. When I first started making, I’d feel bored working on projects that weren’t visually fun enough to sustain over longer periods of time! In 2024 I’ll definitely be taking the longevity of my garments into account :-) p.s your hair looks fab in this vid

These projects are soo cool. You talked about trends and trying out new garments that you don't know if you'll like, I do feel you. But since I like to make a lot of experimental patterns, if I find a trend I want to try out but I'm not sure I'll like it I choose a design that's not for every day use so if I like it I can then make a garment that I'll like and wear but without all the first time mistakes and if I don't like it I'll still have a cute, fun, collection piece that I won't feel like I wasted my time on. This is the process that works for me when it comes to experiment with projects
I’m knitting my first ever sweater right now. It’s a raglan sweater by handmade by Florence. It’s a free pattern and she’s got a very easy to follow tutorial on CZcams. I added stripes to mine to make it more fun to knit. Highly recommend that one having such a detailed video to follow made it super easy.

Just found your channel because I just bought a knitting machine and youtube suggested one of your videos! It was so fun to see what you were working on and what the challenges are! I have a lot of similar goals for the new year regarding making practical pieces (including non-apparel and household items), experimenting with new techniques, and trying my hand at more abstract, improvised, artistic projects. Cables are so fun! I think you’ll really like cable knitting. It’s so satisfying to watch the cables work up and keeps things interesting. Tip: buy extra yarn for cable projects!

I would also love to learn more granny squares! I learned the spiral granny square recently from HappyBerry Crochet's pattern and I'm making a wacky scarf out of them right now.

i also want to do more colour-work knitting projects this year!! when it comes to garments, i only use black and white to match my personal style, and it's a lifesaver for me to make my pieces more interesting:) and i also think that i want to experiment with more extravagant textures, because so far all of my projects are made from the most basic, popular ones. and that of course isn't bad in itself, but i'm feeling a little bit more adventurous this year ahahah the only thing stopping me from all of that is the lack of time for creating and money for yarn ahahaha anyways, great vid, can't wait to see your future creations!!!
I love that so much, finding fun and interesting techniques but sticking with familiar colours and styles seems to be the best thing to do! Money for yarn is always a tricky one, that’s definitely why I love 2nd hand yarn to just save a little money :’)
If you are interested in garter stitch, I suggest you look at the details in the sweaters made by Kim Hargreaves. She uses garter stitch around the edges on many sweaters, and it really adds a nice detail. I would also suggest taking a peek at Elizabeth Zimmerman‘s books which you may find in a library, since they are no longer in print. She loves garter stitch. Even though these styles may not be ones you like to wear, I think you can appreciate the details and would love to incorporate some of that in your designs.

We call those "pot holders". You can pick up a hot pan with them, or set a hot pot on them. Again, the styles are endless. They really can add personality to your kitchen. I'm with you about the color work scenery sweaters. It's like you're wearing a piece of art.

I also want to do more colorwork especially colorwork socks I really want to make them or just socks with variagated yarn idk just really obsessed with socks and have been putting it off

Inspiration
Raglan won't take long to learn at all. Its my absolute go to for jumpers wnd cardigans. Its soo easy to pick up. I cant be dealing with sewing up when raglan is available! Top down aswell, so you can try on.
Such a good point, not having to sew the arms on is a big bonus!!

The word you were looking for was "trivet".. at least that is what they are called in the US
I get so confused with US and UK crochet terms, I always used ‘treble’ but I think that means different things in different countries 😭
