Regarding loading solutions, theres a couple of newer ones which I use, that resulted in the older ones being sold!! SDrive Max for disc and tape loading, really easy to use, a menu on screen, or a touch screen on the actual device. The best however is the AVG Cart from tmp on the Atariage forum. Loads CAR and ROM files, XEX files, and some ATR files.
Recent developments this summer has resulted in the real ultimate cart, I was beta testing this for a couple of months. With the correct cable you can also connect it to the SIO port, this results in near perfect disc and cassette loading, including ATX (real protected disc dumps). Also it can emulate the SIDE2 cart which integrates with Incognito and U1MB. I don't use anything else now.
Only issue is, its too tall to fit in the 800 with the cart door shut.
Really looking forward to the Incognito installation, should be a fun video.
Agreed, AVG cart is an awesome solution, SDrive or SDrive max are also very good SIO2SD is really showing it's age now
Not only was SIO kind of like the USB of its day on Atari machines, but it was designed by the guy who would later go on to invent USB. IIRC, he described SIO as "USB 0.1".
Awsome! You deserve 10x more subscribers!
Ace cartridge, the Lotharek device seems a bit fiddly by comparison. Great video!
So great to see this machine u action. I've always been curious about it, but it's my first time seen it running on real hardware, I've only seen it on emulators before. What a beautiful Atari 800 you got there. Congrats Maddy.
I baught a ATARI 800 in winter 1979 when I was in Grade 9.
I used to have all those Games you played and also made a few
That was a great PC to make games with too.
It was like $899+ tax or summin, The Disk Drive was like $500 and 48 K RamCram was like $200+
It was expensive back them, But it really was made to develop games at ARACADE quailty back then.
Excellent Computer !!!!
Atari 800 and APPLE II were the best.
I grew up a commodore user. but I must say the Atair 800 is a beautiful machine. One day I'd like to get one. I like how the cartridge port pops open like a VCR.
I remember buying Ballblazer for my 800 + 800XL, at Toys R’ Us!
So great to find this channel, in my reco’d! Cheers!
The older machines may not run diskette and compact cassette programs, but the XL/XE cartridges usually had the chips (which should be in the ROM, too), to run on older machines. I remember my One-on-One, with Dr. J and Larry Bird cartridge running on both the old and new...
Montezuma’s Revenge is an incredible game -- like but better than Jumpman, because of how smoothly it plays!
Great video!!!! On Commodore and now Atari you're the Queen!!!! Saludos. :8)
Glad to see you enjoying the 800!! Good video I enjoyed it.
3:35 Well the incompatibilities are often due to the 800 having 48k of RAM while many modern releases require 64K or more. The graphics chipsets are very compatible between different Atari 8bits, unlike OCS/AGA on Amiga. The first 400/800's (up to September 1981) had the CTIA graphics chip which is missing a few extra graphics modes of the GTIA chip. Most 400/800's have GTIA and all later Atari8bit machines had GTIA also. A GTIA from Nov 1981 is the same as a GTIA from 1992 but there are PAL and NTSC variants. Otherwise another incompatibility is trying to run a PAL game on an NTSC machine or perhaps the other way around. SIO is fully digital. The reason Ballblazer on your 7800 is faster is perhaps because of NTSC vs PAL speed. I can tell your 800 is PAL machine. Ballblazer was originally coded for NTSC 60hz. I'm not familiar with 7800 for PAL but your 7800 was running ballblazer at the correct NTSC speed the game was originally supposed to run. If your 7800 is PAL then the European release of Ballblazer code was adapted for faster native PAL 50hz screen refresh which seems likely.
I personally don't like Incognito because of the irreversible damage done to the machine. You can use a capacitance button instead of turning the power light into a button (I do not recommend doing this but it's your machine). It's better to get an 800XL and install U1MB if you want to run high RAM and XL/XE software. The European PAL 800's are rather rare and collectable and the Incognito turns it into a Frankenstein of 1980 and 2020 technology.
A well restaurated and cleaned Atari looks so much better than the usual machines, that were stored more or less carefully over 30+ years. The color scheme of the Keys together with the case is really aesthetic.
Stylistic. You can't use "aesthetic" the way you just did.
@@theannoyedmrfloyd3998 that my be true.
The tone of your voice is beautiful.
I miss the simplicity of old tech. The User had far more control over it, than they do today. And that is all part of the _Master Plan._
The real "cyberwar" is about the availability of information. Ecosystems, as all computers posess today are a trick to limit this information and create dependency of software, thus profit, without taking any effort.
Remember the discussion about the disappeared Windows start button? It assumed that an imaginary piece of software has a real value...
This is a cool device, fart sounds and all. I still have my 1050, but this would be nice to have. My favourites on my 800: Spy vs Spy, Archon, Bruce Lee, Karateka. But I need to recap it before. Great video.
lolll, that jumpman segment *was* hilarious XD
the Atari 8-bit version has a better falling animation than the Amiga.
Only recently I found out that Atari Robotron can be played with 2 joysticks, like the original arcade game! The game is so much better! And a lot of fun for 2 players.
I'd never actually seen the original Robotron, being an Amiga head I am used to the llama equivalent!
Same actually, it's only in recent years i've seen Robotron. Nothing beats Llamatron for me though :o)
@@MsMadLemon something about the sound effects in llamatron is very satisfying!
@@barnabas5688 I agree, It's the sound effects that attract me to it also!
The original Robotron was the arcade machine however the Atari 800 version is great.
Where I am from Robotron was a hardware manufacturer which made their own homecomputers. :P
Classic chiptune in the background
Yeah, in Jumpman Jr., speed level 2 is a challenge, but speed 1 is pretty much impossible.
Atari 8-bits are among the only ports of Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong, Jr. (by Atarisoft) that have all four screens.
C64 was the other. Even the original NES versions only had the three “non-pie” boards!
Enjoy the Incognito, my name is on that PCB :D
Thank you! :oD
Tomorrow I upload the installation of it :o)
Another great video, always love watching your vids Mrs M 😀.
I bought a generic SIO2SD a while ago but haven't gotten around to using it yet, thanks for reminding me i had it, also i bought a Ultimate Cart but then read i had to have a 1MB ram upgrade on either my XL or XE to use it , is this correct or have i misread ?
"EDIT"
No it was the SIDE2 Cart i bought from a seller on eBay but don't know anything about it, is it true i need 1MB ram ?, and does anyone know what advantages it has over Ultimate Cart? Thanks .
I have a standard 130XE (128K ram) and the SIDE2 cart. with 128K you can use Spartados X. With 16/48/64K you can use the gamemenu (XEX files) of the SIDE2. U1MB ram is only needed when you want to do more advanced things with Spartados X , or want to play a few games/demos that use more than 128K ram. I use my SIDE2 since 3 years and dont bother to expand my internal memory with the U1MB. 128K ram of my 130XE is enough.
@@RichardCyberPunk
Thanks dude , much appreciated
Love it
@Ms Mad Lemon, you don't need to press that SHIFT button so long, you press it until you see "SIO2SD xex loader" on the screen. I also recommend not launching games by pressing joystick button because most of them require you to launch them by pressing OPTION with RETURN (RETURN at least for 2 seconds I think). By the way... If you have other 8bit Atari (I mean newer one like 65XE/130XE/800XL) you should check Sophia2 (you'll find it on AtariAge forum) ;) Best regards to you ;)
I wouldn’t mind owning one of these ATARI era machines. I really like the XE. It was half Computer/ Console. I currently only have a ATARI 520 ST & the Colecovision Expansion Module #1 to play VCS 2600 games.
You mean XEGS. There are the 65XE and 130XE computers.
Oh yeah, I know what it's like to send things out of the country. I sent a spare Micromite Companion to a friend in Brazil as a gift and the first time that I sent it, it was returned due to "insufficient description". WTF? I had put "hobbyist electronics" on it the first time, the second time I added "Micromite Companion". It went through that time, but it cost me double. But it's in Sao Paulo at last.
I told the lady at the Post Office that trying to explain to Customs what these things are for, was like trying to explain what stars are to a goldfish.
mam i am 21 years old computer science student and geek of technology. I really like you what are you doing and please don't take it wrong, I really want a women like you in my life who can understand these kind of old retro memorable state of the art tech history but unfortunately i haven't found anyone like that. You have my respect, Love and good blessings
Plot twist: 2:47 The monitor is just showing a VCR in stop mode.
Great video can I ask what game the music in the intro is from. Many thanks.
Music credits at 17:04 it's an Atari 800 tune too!
@Ms Mad Lemon, I must point out, that games like Ballblazer were written for NTSC timing, and are thus slower (most noticeable on audio) on PAL machines.
I have a SDrive Max and an Ultimate Cart for my Ataris...and I much prefer the Ultimate Cart. I just can't stand the sounds that the Atari is making when loading from disk (either real or emulated). Whoever thought that it might be a good idea to accompany the loading with these tinnitus inducing beep sounds, well he or she was just plain wrong. Yeah, I could turn down the volume while loading but I can't be bothered. I'm happy with the UC, the SDrive Max is collecting dust most of the time.
*tinnitus
Also I rather enjoy the
I\O sounds. It lets you know what the computer is doing. It's better than what the Spectrum computers do when loading cassette software!
@@theannoyedmrfloyd3998 Granted, it's better than what the spectrum does...but still. It honestly made me stop using the SDrive Max after a while because I got a mild headache from these sounds. They could have choosen something a little less unnerving IMHO.
Yes!
I noticed good shisha at 00:17 ☕️
Only two people playing Jumpman together can have that much fun when playing at that speed. :)
I didn't know there was an Amiga version of Jumpman. I always played it on the C64.
Yeah, though it's not a commercial realise, but a PD game, that can be found on Aminet actually.

If you get that incognito board working, there is a nice GEM-like desktop for the Atari that might be worth looking at. atari8.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/gui3.png
So you are more than just a pair of nicely manicured hands!
What you drinking energy or tea as like your ASMR teas
Nah I don't touch energy drinks. I was drinking orangeade in this one, but usually lemonade.
@@MsMadLemon cool
I choose the game and press the option + return key and the game loads
Great video fellow retro girl gamer!
We say "necessity is the mother of invention" here in Poland I had a 65XE and an XC12 tape recorder in 88 but I didn't have a disk drive it was too expensive with us then you earned $ 20-25 a month. So in '89 I installed a Blizzard turbo in an XC12 tape recorder and that's how it worked then - czcams.com/video/bmeYo_9A19s/video.html&ab_channel=ŁukaszSzałaśny
*biiieennn Ms Mad Lemon...me CASO!...quiero 20 hijos! :-D ...very goooooddd Ms Mad Lemon I'm getting married, I want 20 children*
If you're having problems playing Jumpman, you're using the wrong joystick! Use the classic CX40.
