Mr Rowe is genuinely one of the only TV personalities I consider a hero. The amount of work he's done to showcase different careers to kids/young adults and just capture the spirit and fun in working in some places is something I love him for

So, I really liked watching Dirty Jobs as a kid. When I earned my Eagle Scout rank, I wrote to Mike letting him know I really liked his show, and he actually wrote me a letter back because he’s also an Eagle Scout and wanted to congratulate me.

That feeling of being "lost" aboard an aircraft carrier can last the whole time you are assigned to the ship. You learn to go from your rack to the mess deck to where you work and back to your rack. Most sailors aboard an aircraft carrier only see about 10% of the interior of the ship the entire two years they live on the ship.
The only time in my life I experienced a bit of "Megalophobia" was when I walked down the pier towards the "Indy" for the first time. I have never felt quite so tiny in all my life than the first time I walked up the gang-way to board that ship.
The first night when our bus pulled up to the Indy, was a bit intimidating. Working the deck as a Final Checker (1995-1997) was the most fun and exciting job I've ever had. My hearing will probably never recover, and no regrets!

Are you NOT allowed to explore.. I assume you have days off.. what did you do on your days off while on the ship? Bunks seem way too small to stay in all day.

The only time you get days off is when the ship is in port, and you get the hell off the damn boat if you aren't on the duty section (fire and security watches, anchor and mooring watches, systems watches and quarterdeck watches are maintained 7 days a week, 24 hours a day) ... but yes, you are allowed to explore except into secure spaces. When the ship is underway you work 7 days a week and you get 8 hours (12 if you are lucky) personal time per day. Usually that personal time can be cut short with battle station, man overboard and other drills. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to spend most of that personal time in that tiny bunk space. After the first week of deployment most would have it no other way. Too much free time is extremely boring.

Mike, I am very glad you got to experience a taste of carrier life. It was the hardest work I have ever done, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Made cruises on the USS Constellation, USS Kitty Hawk, and USS Ranger. Sailed 4 of the 7 seas and around the world. There was never any question about if what we did mattered.
Thanks for your service...Navy Brat here. My father did 2 & 1/2 cruises around the world and we have wonderful pictures, presents & memories from all of that. Thankfully we had a wonderful childhood, Thanks to the Navy for all they provided us. Japan and Hawaii were the best to see as a child. Thanks Mike and crew.

I did a deployment onboard the Harry S Truman as a plane captain/Aviation Mechanic in 2018. This was by far the best video about carrier life I’ve seen yet. Been out of the navy for almost four years now but the sights and sounds you guys captured made me feel like I was right back onboard. Ya nailed it, Mike and crew. Will be waiting for more.

My Uncle was career Navy and when I was a kid, he got me onto several aircraft carriers and the sub that he commanded. Such a great experience that I'll never forget. When I saw Top Gun in the theater, i didn't want to be a pilot, I thought the deck crew looked like the best place to be. 8 years later, I'm wearing a white jersey, final check for VQ-5 DET-5 on the USS Independance, CV-62.

This was filmed about a year after I retired from that very aircraft carrier. I left April of 2014, about 2/3 of the way through the dry dock period Mike talks about at the beginning. Nice to see some familiar faces (funboss), and familiar spaces. I do miss it sometimes. BTW, Stennis is currently at Newport News, VA for reactor refueling, and won't be done for about 2 more years.
I watch all these Navy tours, but this is hands down the best one I have ever watched. Thanks Mike and thanks US Navy!!
I was an engineer at Sikorsky some 35 years ago. I did some design work on the Seahawks back then. They are very reliable. Now, I work for the company that makes the F-18s. I don’t work on those, but good to see them flying.
I served on this ship CVN-74 John C. Stennis 2005-2007 some of my greatest memories and some of my hardest days of work lay with in that mighty ship! To Mr. Mike Rowe if you should ever see this comment you have been a great inspiration to me, to work hard for the life I want, and the honor of using my hands to achieve that life. I can remember talking about asking you on this ship while you where with Dirty Jobs to see how the Engineering department worked. Keep up the great work you do!

I was lucky enough to be invited by my brother to participate in a Tiger cruise aboard his ship, USS Lassen DDG-82 back in 2016. Coolest experience I have ever had, but I definitely never really figured out my way around the ship without needing help. It didn't make it easier being a civilian, I was constantly terrified of getting in people's way or accidentally finding myself somewhere I shouldn't be 😅 luckily the Navy personnel were all incredibly helpful and nice, they seemed very happy to have some new faces aboard.
XO Hak is one damn fine American patriot. I feel like he exudes positivity and encouragement to the crew. Great morale booster.

LOL. Because I didn't tell anyone. LOOSE lips sink ships !!! LOL.

Can't wait for part 2. I'm a DOD engineer who works on these in port. Only been out on an active one once, and the air wing wasn't aboard. Love watching videos like this on flight ops and the other parts of the ship I don't normally see.
Mike, I worked as contract maintenance on T-45's for the Navy, we followed the 45's everywhere they went including on CQ dets( Carrier Qualification). After 12+ hours on that deck, the Slam, Roar and Buzz ever few minutes was like a lullaby, I slept like a baby.

No, you don't. It's a great job for a little while. Going out to sea for weeks, months, or the better part of a year sucks. Very hard on the family too.
I can never get over how young these sailors are. Youth gets the important grunt work done, but you cannot deny that the people who eventually choose to return to civilian life after an enlistment or two are some of the more appreciative and respectable of their respective generations. The lifers become part of the soul of the Navy.
I spent 13 years in the Navy. 4 of those years were on aircraft carriers. This was so enjoyable to watch. Brought back some great memories. Thank you for a great show.

I was Mini Boss on this ship from 2010-2012. Great memories and I'm glad that this video highlights the awesome work our Sailors do day in and day out. I never got tired of being amazed with what they can accomplish.

Okay so I was wrong about your dragging round ya done was your best show ever, this is so the next level stuff, wow what a amazing thing to even walk the deck of that ship & see some of what they do 24/7. Mike you rock brother.
VAW-123, attached to the USS America CV-66 from 1989 to 1992. I had the great fortune to be flown to the boat while it was deployed in the Mediterranean, so I got to "trap" in a COD when joining my squadron. I too was a greenshirt, but in the squadron that meant I maintained my aircraft (E2-C Hawkeye). My squadron's 75-man berthing was right under the ramp of the flight deck, where the birds first crossed before trying to catch the wires, so I learned to sleep through the roar of jet engines and monstrous thuds as the birds hit the deck and the scream of the arresting wires spooling out and the bellowing hiss of the steam brake slowing those wires down.
I worked nights my entire second 6-month cruise as well as the 4-month cruise immediately following the first Persian Gulf War, so ! also worked those same 12-hour shifts on the flight deck for weeks and even months on end. That doesn't include the half hour before and after shift change spent in the work center, getting/giving passdown of everything that occurred the previous 12 hours. That's why I sneer at anyone that I've worked with since separating from the Navy when they whine about putting in a little overtime.
Been watching Mike for years and I love this military stuff, it's so fascinating!

This shows what your shows have done, become, and who you have become as a person/celebrity....the way these people spoke with you, to you, and laughed with you shows that they respected you and your crew. You were not treated as some TV guy making a show, but as one of them showing off each and every job that needs to be done. From the new kid on the deck to the seasoned officer, you were, again, not some TV guy, but one of them.
When I was in JROTC I was able to take a tour on this carrier. Incredible to see it person. Glad to see a video of it
I was in the Navy for 4 years -- hated every minute of it. Joined the Air Force the same day I walked off the ship and didnt regret it.
I did 7 yrs navy and LOVED it !!! LOL.Then I joined the army for 7 yrs-hated every minute of it. LOL.

This was great, the right kind of PR needed for the Navy. I worked the Aircraft Carriers for 14 years as an A-6E Intruded and F/A-19 Hornet guy.
My grandpa was a Captain in the Navy and flew over 55 air crafts and was on about 20 ships. I have most of his military things and it's beyond amazing to me. I have a huge painting of the USS Ponchatula that he was on and decommissioned along with paintings of planes he flew like the A-6E Intruder
I was a white shirt on a helo carrier. We loaded and unloaded helos internal and external. The longest day i ever worked anywhere was at sea replenishment. Unloading helo nets, repackaging those nets and lift cables, hooking those packages to the helos. You need to 'ground' yourself before u hookup or u get a serious jolt. I musta missed once. I remember reaching up with the hookup, felt a thud, and when the lights came back i was on my a** with a dumb look on my face. Load master on the helo looking down at me laughing his a** off 😂
I was a civilian guest of the Navy for 2 weeks of Ops after the carrier came out of OH in May of '85. I was on the USS Enterprise off of the Coast of CA-OR much like Mike got to do. We left Alameda NAS and took on all of the Patuxent River NAS AC to certify the deck etc.
Best experience/adventure of my life. Absolute respect for all of the sailors/staff on board. No one beats these guys = # 1!

Too bad you didn’t understand what your deployment meant to protecting our country and what it stands for in this crazy world. I was in the tank corp in the late 50's and early 60,s. Hard work. Dirty work. Noisy work. But I knew and still know I was protecting our country and I was and still am proud of what I did to keep us safe so people like you can have the opportunity to gripe and complain. I almost feel sorry for you and those unhappy people like you. Some day you may understand what it means to protect our democracy.

I got to tour that very carrier when it was in San Diego in 2004 or so. Young guy named Paul saw me (I was 13 or around there) and my parents at the base admiring it, and so took us on board with permission since my step-father was a retired USAF Lt. Col. I never expected the deck to be so rough, but it makes sense with being at sea and not wanting aircraft to slip off. There was a battle damaged F-18 on the deck that we had our picture taken in front of. I will never forget that experience! You go up 4-7 steps on the stairs, you go to the deck or floor going down depending on whether you are above or below the flight deck, deck vs level, if I recall right. It’s been so long, but still so crisp as well.

Never forget that Pearl Harbor was not a surprise, in fact it was allowed and desired to happen.
Mike, I can assure you, you being on there learning these dudes job (bread and butter) youve boosted their morale. For you it might not seem like you've done more than what you physically did, maybe, but I know 100% having someone "from the outside" learn and execute something that people do every day, makes anyone in the military, regardless of branch, happy. Morale dies because everyone is used to it, and nothing is hard or new, but showing someone something new to them always boosts it. Love you

Great show! I served on the USS Oriskany CVA 34, an old Essex Class carrier in 1970-1971. Yankee Station as an ATN2. Believe it or not operationally not a lot has changed! The ship and living sure has though!
