Humble and simple comfort food is what i'm craving right now, and this mince and onions recipe is just what I want. I was inspired to make this based off of my stepmothers mince and onions she used to make when I was little. I guess the only way to describe it is as a savoury mince with onions and peas. If you're British, then you have probably had a version of this at some point in your life. It's so simple, but done right it's once of the cheapest yet most satisfying comforts foods there is. The trick to making good mince and onions is using good mince and good techniques. There's nothing fancy in this recipe, it's just good melancholy beating food.
#savourymince #minceandonions #groundbeef
To make my savoury mince you will need:
Serves 3-4
►500g of beef mince
►About 500ml of beef stock
►2 bay leaves
►1+1/2 large onions
►Frozen peas (roughly 150g)
►About 100g of potatoes PER PERSON
►Unsalted butter
►1 tbsp plain flour
►Salt & pepper
►Oil for cooking
►Small bunch of freshly chopped parsley

I was a step mum , its not the easiest job in the world and I think it is lovely that you said those nice things about your step mum. If my step kids had said something like that about me I would have been over the moon. I bet she is very proud of you. 😀
I was a very damaged young boy. I didn't have stability and I didn't know what was going on. My world was upside down and I couldn't make sense of anything. I can see now how difficult it might have been for her. I remember actually a time when she came to my school and gave me a Cadburys chocolate bar. It was so unusual to me at the time, but I know now that she was just trying to build a relationship.
Adam Garratt 😀
I make this quite often, and the whole family enjoy it. I use any leftovers to make little pies the next day, and they always taste fantastic. My son who never cooks, has started to use the leftover mince to make toasted sandwiches for his lunch the next day. Its basic, healthy cooking.
Love the toasted sandwich idea!
Keep on your soapbox m8y.
We all start out somewhere in the kitchen.
As a single bloke I batch cook a lot, but I do love to return to the British basics.
This dish lends itself to a pie, cobbler, cottage pie, carrots and mustard/cheesy mash.
Keep up the good work, Times are hard and cooking is a real skill to have.
Savoury mince is superb British comfort food, and you have done it great justice here Adam. I totally agree with you on the Soapbox section. Negative people like those are neither use nor ornament, more to be pitied than blamed. Shared, like good food should be 😋👍🌟
Cheers Pete. It just irritated me that just because it's not got 400 ingredients and isn't pretty looking that somehow it's not good food. A generation was brought up on good home cooked healthy food like this.
@@Adam_Garratt It's got way too many ingredients.
Corned Beef Hash also doesn't looks good, but it tasts just fantastic. I like it most with pickled gurkens or Beet Red, here in Germany sweet and sour. It's comfort food at it's best.
Looks so fabulous and I found your tribute to your step-mum very touching. 💜
This is not meant to be an emotional post but one of a long search to perfection. My mum, who passed many years ago, made the perfect minced beef. We had it with mashed potatoes peas and maybe carrots. And the leftovers next day, she turned it into a curry and rice. I’ve never been able to replicate her recipe for the mince, but to be honest, I haven’t tried enough. Her final result for the mince recipe was very dark in colour, I think she must of used beef oxo cubes, and the consistency was slightly thick. Your video had lots of good tips that gave me ideas I can work on. Thank you.
Thank you for your story Chris. Glad I've helped in some way. All the best to you mate
Yes carrots too.
You'll probably find that your Mum cooked the mince a lot longer than today's recipes tell you to. My mom and I always have people commenting on how tender and dark the mince is and we couldn't understand it, until we realised that we cooked our mince for a much longer period of time. The secret is to make sure that you almost *_oversear_* the mince before adding the liquid and allowing to slow cook on a simmer for a long time. I could go into a lot more detail, but that's the gist of it...
Hopefully this answers your question...
First of all, british food isn't bad, it's delicous. I love it most! All the Pork Pies, cottage Pie, Beefstew and Dumplings, Scotch Eggs, Apple Pie and Custard etc, etc. It's simple and real food without Chichi. That is why i like so much your way of cooking. And you always keep an eye on the costs. Comfort food does not have to be expensive, you proof it in your recipes. Go forward with your Channel, it's brilliant. Warmest regards from Germany!
Hi Adam, we all love comfort food no matter where we come from. For my family it was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas. I will be making this for my husband and I soon after Christmas and let you know how it turns out. It looks delicious. Have a Merry Happy Christmas from across the pond. We are having a mild winter so far here in Chicago.
Aww thanks Gail. Yes do let me know if you like it. Have a merry Christmas to you and your family
Looks good. As a young and poor teacher, I often made something similar, but I added cream cheese and sour cream. Served over cheap noodles. Ground beef used to be cheap, not anymore! Audio is just fine.
Thank you pal!
I loved this video. Sub'd. And simple savoury mince was something that I also grew up with, as we didn't really have a lot of money either! Simple, comforting and delicious indeed! XX
Absolutely awesome. Thanks Adam
No worries mate!
A very nice meal Adam. Glad you’re safe and back with us. Thank you for the vid.
This little old lady of 73 years old came across your video today......I trust you are well..❤❤
Awww welcome to the channel Henrietta x

Thank you Daric. Appreciate you bud
That's a sort of relief, I'm sorry you're poorly, but so glad you aren't packing it in.
You are a quality channel that teaches me lots and I really appreciate that.
Great recipe and totally agree with the soapbox at the end
Happy to have you back, Adam! It was really heartwarming to hear the story behind the dish, happy to hear that things are getting better for you. Sending good wishes your way 🤗
Thank you Manasi! ❤️
Gonna have to try this
Love mince and onions, my Mum used to make this but she’d serve it with rice. Every now and again I get a craving for this and my cravings have started so guess I’ll be making this for myself yum yum yum.
I'm so making this this week Adam!! By far my favorite family dinner we used to eat, makes me instantly feel at home when I eat this dinner
Best dinner ever lol
Love this dish used to have it like you on weekends when I was growing up in N. Ireland. I now live in Canada, made it ,loved it,great memories in my grans home with the smell of this cooking.Thankyou, and your right about the haters, could they use this wasted energy into something positive🇨🇦🇬🇧👍
That looks really good, and I'm glad you did the taste test. I make a few versions of this, but I've never made crispy potatoes. I hope she didn't stop making food for her and her family, people can be horrible. 😊
I make this with new potatoes and cook them in with the mince. Gives them a great flavour.
Look delicious and, as you say, very comforting. Will definitely give this a try. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, and thanks for commenting 😊
Made this for dinner this evening. Absolutely delectable
Good to hear. Hope you're keeping safe 🙂
Good to have you back
Cheers Garry

On a cold day is there a better dish than mince and onions I don’t think so 👍👍👍!! Keep the videos coming
Cheers David pal!
Good stuff dude doing this video. I enjoyed watching that. I like the personal stories as well as the cooking.
Thank you mate 🙂👍
Most great cooks cook the way their mum or grandma taught them and they just add another flare to it. Presentation is always key too. Mince looks tasty as !! Potatoes looked scrumptious too
thank you Bella! x
Looking very good bud One of my favourite dishes I make mine in slow cooker and freeze for the rest of the week So just bung in oven with bit extra gravy Yummy
I sauté my spuds like this a lot now. Since I done them both hubby and I prefer them this way thanks to you xx 💋
Hi Adam, greetings from Sydney, Australia, and it's great to see you back! My Mum used to make savoury mince for us every now and then, and I don't remember her ever putting peas in. However, having said that, we didn't usually have potatoes with it either: in Australia, we mostly eat it on toast. I've made a couple of different Aussie versions of this, (one of which *DOES* actually include peas), and you're quite right: it's tasty, filling and very comforting. Stay safe and well, Adam. I'm sorry to hear about your recent problems, and I sincerely hope that you're recovering well. Best wishes from Australia, mate!
Thank you Christopher. Yeah I've seen a lot of Aussie versions on toast. Looks good!
I love this video and plan to make this ASAP. I enjoyed your soapbox as I’m a Yank who has come to an appreciation of British food from watching home cooks on YT. The first time I made bangers and mash with onion gravy(thank you for the recipe and video) I was happy and my husband was in heaven. So who’s to say British food is not good?? That is like judging American food on Jello and Spam! (Both of which have their place anyway, food snobs be daXXed.) So thank you for your lovely videos and encouragement of us home cooks who just get dinner on the table for our families every night. Love your channel. Be well, dear Adam. 💜😍🥰😽😘😘😘
I think a lot of the stigma came from the end of the second world war when rationing was still around into the 50s. Then came the awful 70s convenience boom, and the world just assumed that's what the food is like. We still make rubbish food just like anyone else. I mean take any petrol station or supermarket scotch egg and pitch it against a home made one fresh out of the fryer and they are completely different. Our food is good, and it's a hill I will die on mate.
Nice dish! Something similiar was one of two meals my grandma could cook well when I was little. Thank you for this video!
Grandma dinners are the best aren't they. My nanny used to make the best roast potatoes and I always pinched my dad's 😂
awesome mate .....enjoyed the soap box rant well said mate x
Nicely said Adam 🤝
Going to cook this.
It's good stuff 😊
This is the kind of food I'd eat from choice.
Sound is superb brother and I could just slide that down my gizzard right now😉
And no garlic in it! 😂
Looks great Adam. Making it tonight. Love your real comfort food. Aussie Bob.
Enjoy it Robert 🙂
Yum, I’m getting hungry!
This recipe is what I grew up on.....something I never think of making now....but after your video I’m going to try....thanks and glad you are back 👍
So simple and yet so satisfying!

Aww thank you! Very sweet of you to say
Hi Adam just found your channel, love mince dishes, will try this out, looks hearty, audio sounds great, by the way , thanks
Thank you Karen. welcome to the family :)
Reminds me of the proper dinners we use to have as kids, that would also be a great topping on a jacket potato.
Absolutely smashing on a jacket spud mate
Looks amazing Adam!!
Your editing is fantastic...
The cat wants a portion xx
Thanks Jenna! Funny thing is, he thinks he'll like it, but soon as you put it down for him he just goes 'nah'. But he'll like the plate after I've finished 🤷♂️😂
Thank you. I hope you are ok now. Take care x
Nothing bland about it, I love it, I sometimes do a suet top for it.
I’m going to make this again. It’s good. Thanks Adam. AussieBob
Nice video mate mince looks savage gonna make it tonight
Nice one David. Enjoy and stay safe
God bless man - love your videos!
Thank you 😊
❤Thanks
I've never had this, but i'm gonna make it. Looks great
It's a simple meal, but it's tasty if you make it right. 😉😋
@@Adam_Garratt well then mine probably won't be tasty 🤣
Yum that looks lovely! We make mince with mashed potatoes/swede/cauliflower but crunchy new potatoes would be brilliant!
Thank you for this lovely recipe it brings me back amazing memories with my grandmother. Now I am from Caribbean descent and I love spicy well season food. I was brought up on both British food and Caribbean and I would like to say I love and appreciate both. I make this dish for my children and I add Beef suet dumplings. I then serve it with some British roast potatoes. Only ignorant idiots will comment that this food is not seasoned. This dish is beautifully seasoned with salt pepper mixed herbs and all the lovely flavoured veg that you add to it. If food from every country taste the same then food would be very boring. I appreciate food from all walks of life and I fully appreciate that I can feed myself and my family.
( I forgot to say my grandmother was a white beautiful British lady)
Thank you! It's nice to hear people's stories. Hope you are all well ❤️
Good food doesn't know any borders. My aunt made this dish very often with minced Pork, because it's cheaper here in Germany than minced Beef, in a savory sauce. We had it with boiled potatoes, which we kneaded in the sauce. As sidedish we had cucumber salad with sour cream dressing. Omg memories can be so mouthwatering😋😀
That looked delicious. My mum used to cook an amazing mince, onions and peas dish when I was a child. I haven’t had mince for years and your video has lit the fire in me to give your recipe a go. I agree with your soapbox comments; too many people try to make themselves look smart by ridiculing others. You have my 100% support. Also, I found the audio totally fine, no problems at all. Thanks for sharing and wishing you all the best....I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you for the support pal. It's just good food though isn't it? I don't understand why us Brits get so much food flak lol. We make some good stuff! Thank you for the input, means a lot
I used to have this growing up it is proper comfort food, I need to make savoury mince now it looks delicious Adam, glad you are safe too, and it's great to see you back mate, and the audio is super and Thank you, for another awesome recipe :-)
It's one of those dishes that just seems timeless right? It's all about little techniques done well. That's what makes the difference to me
loved your video .good cheap easy meal . Mince is a meal that you can add anything to it.How can anybody not like this.
It's a fab easy meal Derek. Thanks for watching mate
A few great messages from this video. Glad you are safe and well. Also glad things are on the improve with your step Mum. I just subscribed when I saw your 'Bangers and mash' video. Very well done. Great messages!!
Thanks so much
Well said mate. Basic tasty food is great. Just like mum and granny used to cook.
Audio is perfect 👌🏻 Yummy 😋 food too. Thank you 🙏🏻🤗
You're welcome Kim 😊
My mom was from a little town in Surrey and she made this dish for us when we were young. I make it for my husband and I when as you say we want something warm and comforting. He likes to call it schlub. It is really good on our cold Canadian winter nights with mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Keep on cooking.
Oh nice! I like the creamed corn idea. I'll try that for sure. Thank you
Did this today with a few changes. I don’t have any onions so I did a mix of shallot and red pepper but everything else was the same and it tasted fantastic thank you x
Nice one Patricia! X
I tried it with my employer and they love it... Thank you so much... EASY SIMPLE AND DELICIOUS ... 😍😘
You're welcome Jane 😘
Hi Adam….just made your Mince and onion recipe ready for tonight’s tea. Having it with mash and veggies….👍
Nice one fella. Hope you all like it
Sound was fine mate, that dish looked delish 👍
Cheers Mark

Thank you Jane. Dogs are just the best medicine aren't they 😊❤️
Now I am properly hungry...Glad you are back..thanks for the lovely recipe :)
Thanks man
You lovely bloke you x.. we used to have this as kids too.
Cheers mate
This is still one of my favourite go to recipees its perfect when iv had a long hard day at work and dont want to slave over the oven all evening but still want a freshly cooked meal
It's a cracking little recipe this. Especially when it's a bit chilly out
@@Adam_Garratt what's even better is its great on toast and you can batch cook it freeze it and use it as a base for a cottage pie etc
Good to see you back, i'm starving.
haha thanks Garry
Hahaha! Me too!!
So good to see you back. I missed you
Thanks man. appreciate ya
New subscriber from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦I was wondering what to make the family for dinner tonight and this looks amazing. I have some ground beef in the freezer and all the other ingredients you mentioned.
Well Greetings! And welcome to the family Kathleen. I hope you enjoy the weird and wonderful stuff that goes on on this channel. 😂❤️
My thanks to you and yours from the States across the pond. mate. Part of me wishes I had stayed there after my tour of duty with the USAF at RAF Upper Heyford. What a wonderful place to live.
Thank you Duane. My stepfather worked as a line cook at RAF Fairford about 15 years ago. Told me some hilarious stories getting drunk with US soldiers 😂
I’m in Australia, my family makes a version of this. We always serve with mashed potatoes, peas and carrots on the side instead of cooked in. There may be gravy powder involved 😅
Thank you for being honest in every way. Always the best way as others might (can't) understand how you are. Your video was great as well as the audio. Also a big thank you for stepping in for this woman. You have a great character with an own opinion you even share in public. This unfortunately got rare nowadays.
Bad luck struck many around me incl. myself. Mother passed, then I broke my hip in the bathroom at night and was only found 2 weeks later (now wheelchair until can walk again but no place to stay without stairs), and last week stepfather passed. Brothers and father don't care, they want to enjoy life. Don't give up, you have many people caring about you!!! 🍀
Wow sounds like you've really been though the mill! Take care of yourself x
It's great to see you back on yt, I always look forward to your videos. I grew up on this mince, was also my kids favourite as they were growing up. I love it with carrots as well with mash or just put in the middle of a home cooked Yorkshire. Can't wait to see more of your videos, think you're a cracking chap. Hope you are in a better place now. X
Thank you so much Levina. Omg a giant Yorkshire pudding would be epic with this. Gonna try 😂
This is good basic food, the fancy stuff is great but you can't beat good old mince n onions, glad you're ok, welcome back.
Never a truer word said. Cheers pal
My comfort food too my dad use to make this for me when we had little money, turnt into my faveourite meal. Im making it tonight thanks for the recipe thought i would never find it
You're welcome Chloe. 😘 I know what it's like to have nowt, so thank you for sharing.
I love your channel and you’re a great cook!! I’m a new sub to your channel!
Thank you! Love your username 😂
Nice to see you back Adam, hope you're better. Though I love many different foreign and ethnic dishes, hotpot or something equally 'ordinary' can still make me go weak at the knees whisking me back to my childhood and my Mum's lovely traditional cooking. Another no-nonsense crowd pleasing dish, cheers Adam.
Cheers Nick. Yep sometimes all you want is a simple warming tasty meal. I love love love hotpot.
Glad to hear you are okay Adam, a bit frightening though. I have always liked mince and onions, as you say, easy comfort food. Thanks for showing how easy this is to make. Sound is fine.
Just thought I would add that I have also had sound issues on my own vids too, it's a bit of trial and error. I have just bought a new mike, so hopefully, mine will improve. Mine are not cooking vids I hasten to add, but if you ever want to learn to play lawn bowls then look mine up. :)
Cheers Alec. You're right, it's going to be trial and error to get the right audio I guess.
Thanks, Adam for another great family share meal, with the colder times ahead families eat together more often, how nice to share a great dish together, thanks Adam for explaining the method and pitfall tips so easily, to be honesty you almost feel your in the kitchen with you, if you have any more great winter dishes please share, take care Mike (Abergele)
Cheers Mike
Made your chicken casserole and it was fantastic. I'll be making this too. Cheers mate.
No problem Mark all the best
Great meal. Easy to follow instruction too. Thank you. Keep getting your soap box and keep talking down the haters. Big thumbs up - Cheetrs Adam
Haha cheers Dave. Glad you liked it fella
Good proper old school scan 😍
It's good stuff 😉
Like your videos mate - just found you and have been binging on them - keep up the good work :-)
Thanks man. Appreciate the follow. Welcome to the family 👍🙂
Hi Adam: I really enjoyed this video and find it terrible that the person you spoke about was so negative. In fact, I have become quite fascinated by recipes for Savoury Mince recently as being originally from the states (and despite having lived here for 40 years) I have never cooked it before. Your recipe has pleased me the most and I will definitely follow it - comfort food is a luxury to me and we all need it from time to time - if not everyday!!! .... especially these days when the whole world seems to have gone mad.
This is the kind of simple, tasty and warming food I really love. Could destroy a big bowl of that right now!
Cheers Adam 👍
It's one of the simplest and tastiest meals. One of my faves. Great on toast too
Sounds fine to me, this was a staple when i was a kid in the 50s along with beans and cheese-on toast
