It's not mandatory, as it can be decided based on Lightning Protection System design, separation distance calculation, type of structure etc.
But it would be great if you maintained this distance.
However, if the earthing is adequate, lightning current will get the lowest resistant path through the down conductor and dissipate the current safely into the earth.
