I think I would have placed 3/16 by 2 in x 18 in. angle iron over the weak broken area for maybe 18 in. long, what ever you have room for, then weld the hinges on. spread the load. just a thought.

My thought is it’s better to have an engineered breaking point than beef everything up resulting in more potential damage such as a completely bent door. As it sets now the factory hinge is the weak point and allows some bending when the door accidentally swings open while dumping. But you are right. I had a job and needed to put the trailer back to work. But deep down inside I wanted to add more support…

How about you fix it so there are ZERO breaking points? You'll be doing this job all over again.

Why would you go through all that and not do it right? What to save $8.00? You should have run a new flat bar or angle iron down the length of the door.

I don't regret the way we made the repair. It has held up well and no issues where we made that fix. Honestly, these doors have been repaired a handful of times. Once they get beat up enough I would simply resort to installing a new gate entirely. It's a poor latching design which we have fixed by abandoning PJ's latch and adding our own.
