Wherein our hero Durfee does an in-depth review of Thieves' World volume #1 of the iconic 80s fantasy series. #ThievesWorld #RobertAsprin #BrianLeeDurfee
These books were the most popular among fantasy readers back in the mid 80's when I was in high school. I finally decided to complete my collection of the main series recently. I had almost forgotten about them, I loved the first 2 books I read way back then. Also read Shadowspawn the full novel, great book about my favorite character in the series. Thieves world is a gem that needs to be brought back to the popularity it once had. Great stuff!
Like you, I first read The Sword of Shannara, then LOTR, and then encountered Thieves World. These books would become my favorites immediately, and just like the Hildebrandt cover enticed me to read Shannara, the Walter Valez covers drew me into the dark intrigues of the Vulgar Unicorn at my very first glance. And yes, like many it would seem, Hanse Shadowspawn was always my favorite character.
Found the new double First Blood edition here in Japan. Effeminate dude on the cover for some reason (true to the character in a way but nobody notices in the book)
I heard about this from you in another video. I managed to find #1 and #3 at a local used bookstore. I loved #1, read it from cover-to-cover. Huge influence on my WIP. I haven't really gotten into #3. Maybe I'll read more of it today.
Hey, Mr. D. Talking of covers, what's your opinion of adaptation covers, when a book is adapted for film or TV, and they re-release it with a scene or characters from the adaptation? Most people I follow on CZcams who talk about books dislike those types of covers, but I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes adaptation covers. I'm not entirely sure why, though. But if a book I've read or am interested in reading has been adapted, and I want to get a copy, I'll usually look for one with the movie cover on it. Thought I'd ask since you have an appreciation for covers.
If you enjoy collecting those type covers thats cool. I hate them. The only one I have in my collection is the Ladyhawke by Joan d Vinge only because it was only ever printed with Mathew Broderick on the cover

Man, those covers bring back memories.

This sounds great. I'll have to check it out.
These definitely need to be republished. Loved these when they came out. Great review! You've inspired me to do a reread.
So excited to hear more about this series. I’ve been grabbing them when I can

Another great thing about Thieves' World: the stories aren't long. The whole of book #1 is ~250 pages in large type.
Long isn't bad. Long is only bad when the story is bad.
Found a set of all 12 on eBay w Ruddell covers. They are great. So glad you did this 👍🏻😎👌
Great!!!
Loved the first one as a kid (I'm 50) and loved it. I did not read the others but I have thought about a lot over the years.

I just got this today, this isn’t the first time this has happened. You must be spying on me or we’re riding the same wavelength.

Why won't the video magically appear when I type "Poul Anderson durfee" to youtube search field?
The old covers were sooooo much better
Thanks for mentioning the story by MZB: I'll be sure to skip that one.
