We need to keep pushing and get louder about the homestead. Texas increased to $100k! Property tax should not even exist in the first place, and before anyone says those taxes are needed to pay for things we all use...FALSE. Look at your property tax bill. The majority of the bill goes to fund public schools. If you feel citizens must pay for the education for their neighbors kids then get the money another way! Tax something else, but not homes! How is that even ethical that people are forever renters? The Government has a continuous lien on homes and that isn't even right. No tax on food, water or medicine because they are deemed "necessity" so you don't think shelter is a necessity??? Very few toll roads do not have a free alternative, you just get to enjoy traffic lights and a lot more time in your vehicle and fuel burn. Going to the Keys and dont like the tolls on the Reagan Tollway, you can go west out of Ft. Lauderdale and take the Alligator Highway through Homestead for free. A lot of toll roads are NOT DIRECTLY government funded, but they do get to do the Eminent Domain to get (CONFISCATE) the land so I agree should never have tolls. If it takes from the public IN ANY WAY, the public should own it and control it.

It’s likely because his house was purchased before yours when prices were cheaper. Florida’s homestead rule caps how much the state can raise taxes on you each year, and where it starts is based on purchase price. So if they bought in the 90s, taxes will be very affordable for them compared to anyone buying in the 2000s (and god help anyone buying now).
The idea was to reward people who bought when it was cheap so they could stay there, and then tax the wealthy northerners who come flocking down in droves and buy the houses after everything is developed and home prices have gone up
