  • I address why some people think Rolex watches are a waste of money! I obviously don't think so, and if you're here, you don't either. Then I go into what situations to avoid in order to maximize the value of your collection.

    Just remember if you're paying way over list for a Rolex "hype" watch, that watch is intrinsically worth much less than what you should actually get for that amount of money. Spending $20K on a Daytona gets you a watch that cost $13K. Spending $20K on a used Patek or Lange could get you a watch that cost $40K new -- and is from another planet in terms of watchmaking skill. If you really want the hype watch, go ahead. But realize the value isn't really there.

    Mine is 1960s Omega diver or chrono, black dial, hesalyte pieces - I guess it relates to childhood as I was born in the 1960s. Still strategy sometimes only gets clear after you already bought some other pieces, plus if you are into 50 year old pieces, you will want one, two or three modern pieces thst are not part of the collection but which you have for daily use, swimming, etc. So you may end up with a clear collection, but also with a few functional watches on top that are not directly related to your collection pieces.

    My Rolex strategy: one sports model for daily wear, which is explore II white now; one precious metal model in case I need to wear suit, I have a white gold day-date II for that. I would like to upgrade my explorer II to either Pepsi, hulk or batman, but haven’t had any clue yet.

    I agree 100%.
    Cars, campers, money pits.
    My Dad loved classic cars.
    His two were beautiful.
    But like my camper, it sits unused here in the Midwest half of each year. I wear my Sub any day, rain, snow, or shine. There is cost or value per use as well.
    An apple watch will be e waste garbage in less than a decade. I can count my own pulse, and walking keeps an automatic going. Hahaha

    I think its all right to spend on hobbies or toys as long there is balance. Sometimes i see my friends spending money on new iphones, i do felt it kinda of waste of money especially the life-span of phones are typically around 2 to 3 years. But at the same time, when someone saw me with my rolex then they can't make sense why would i buy such a expensive watch. That's life !

  • @SPQR-Z
    @SPQR-Z Před 4 lety

    It’s always weird to me how certain people get so wrapped up in how other people choose to spend their own money. Who cares it’s their money and it’s really none of anyone else’s concern. Everyone buys things that may seem absolutely frivolous to others. A friend of mine busts my chops about buying Rolex watches just about every time he sees me. He’s joking but at the same time he’s not. Of course he’s got a out of control expensive toy buying habit of his own, mostly financed by credit. He just prefers different toys then watches that’s all. People need to chillax. Having a watch buying strategy is good advice. Also knowing your financial limitations

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z Před 4 lety

      Hey Lewis congratulations on the AP. I know you been eying it and it’s been a good buying opportunity IMO. Very happy for you. It’s a good feeling to pick up a nice piece especially at a discount. AP, Lange, Patek and Rolex are quality brands that will always bounce back and be in demand again. The economist say the economy is about to explode. What do you think? My investment manager got me through this virus thing relatively unscathed. He said he thinks that things are looking much better through the end of the year. I think you bought that AP at the right time. I bought 6 flipping Rolex at near fire sale (relatively speaking) prices and am waiting for prices to recover. We shall see. I don’t know AP RO pricing very well but it seems to me that that model was around 43, 45k and up in preowned with Fullset? Again congratulations and hopefully you’ll do a little show/tell video

      @@SPQR-Z thx brotha. Yeah, i feel we're on the edge of the economy taking off also; I'm all in. I got the 26400IO.OO.A004CA.01 for $22k! I'm hesitant to do a video and might delete this comment later. I notice you and some guys with collections on CZcams never show their faces and i dont think thats a bad idea :). How about u? I'd love to see a video about what you picked up!

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z Před 4 lety

      Wow that sounds like a great price! I’ve been telling people that were in the market to buy but disheartened by the “bubble” prices to buy now. I’ve seen Rolex prices start firming up now and even rising slightly for popular models. The common steel models got very attractive for a short window of buying opportunity. I picked up 3 Subs, a older GMT and an Explorer 2 42mm for pretty good discounts. Way off the highs that is. I also got a early 50’s Oyster Perpetual pre Explorer like was used on the 1953 Mt Everest British Expedition. I am working on a review for the entire Explorer I line from the 1953 pre Explorers to the current release. I will also be delving into the history, the myths, the facts and the controversy of the Rolex vs Smiths debate, specifically which watch made it to the Roof of the world first. Ought to ruffle a few feathers ;) It’s a fascinating bit of horological lore for sure. I was thinking about doing a video about my recent buying experiences in the virus slowdown, in what had otherwise been an extremely hot market. I’m getting busy now that the lockdown is lifting, so all this free time I had is going away but if I get the time I will try and squeeze that video in. Again congrats on the pickup and enjoy that beautiful watch.

    I like your flow Lewis....great advice. I don't have so much a collecting strategy as much as I have a wrist wear strategy. I brought my core collection down to 5 pieces last year and sold everything else. I enjoy looking at and researching different watches. I work shift work and start my days off by wearing a different automatic piece each set for 4 days straight. My quartz pieces don't count in the grand scheme as I see them as disposable assets.....I enjoy wearing my 2 Casio Protreks at work due to the added functionality and ruggedness....I often sell the Casio pieces off and buy the latest offerings every 2 years or so. I'm waiting patiently for a Rolex OP34 in Olive or a Tudor BB58. I'm also eyeballing the latest Seiko Captain Willard in green that is going to be released next month.
