There's a Charlton Heston interview clip on how he read the book on a plane trip and later set the wheels in motion for a film adaptation! It's not only one of my favorite movies but remains one of the scariest I've ever seen!
Sorry for the re-upload. Just had to re-edit the reaction to make it more copyright friendly. 😊👍
I can’t find it but Phil Hartman played Charlton Heston in SNL skit SOYLENT GREEN 2. “SOYLENT GREEN IS STILL MADE OF PEOPLE! THEY DIDN’T CHANGE THE RECIPE LIKE THEY SAID THEY WOULD!”
long before cable tv we all watched the same movies and television shows. whenever a special movie of the week would be promoted for Friday or Saturday night, we would remember and plan to watch it.... generally every week lol. I remember this movie, Willard and Bad Ronald were 3 that week watched for sure.
This is such a good film. I'm so glad that you re-uploaded.
Thanks for posting your reaction, I think this is a badly underrated and forgotten movie. Of course everyone knows "Soylent Green is people!", but the path to finding that out, and the effect it has on our characters, is the more interesting journey. Edward G. Robinson was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer shortly before filming started. The only people he told on set were the director and Charlton Heston (who was his decades-long friend in real life). Heston's tears when he's saying goodbye to Robinson at the suicide booth were real. Robinson died shortly after filming ended.
If I heard correctly, I think Mr.Robinson passed either days or hours after that scene was shot because it may have been Heston who broke the news to the cast and crew. (I've seen videos about this movie, including an interview with Heston so I'm not sure who said what)
Live long Rock 🪨 🎸
Thanks for this! Other great Charlton Heston science fiction movies: the original Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man.
The bodyguard is played by Chuck Conners who is famous for playing The Rifleman on TV. The old woman referred to as your Honor I believe played T'Pau in the second season Star Trek episode Amok Time. I'm not sure if you have seen that episode yet so I won't spoil it for you.
This is an interesting movie. Some of it is correct, like wearing masks, some isn't but could very well be in the future, like the growing gap in wealth. And people as furniture. Maybe that was already a fetish in the 70's. I don't know, I was barely a teenager when this movie was originally aired.
Oh that's funny you mention Chuck Connors. I just saw him 2 days ago in a Night Gallery episode. 😁
You left out Mr Lurie (Tribbles) and Cloud William (Omega Glory).
Glad u re uploaded it✨🤍
I always wished it had been hotdogs instead of those squares.
Compare this movie with Star Trek Deep Space 9 "Past Tense" (2 parter, S3 E11 & E12). Gives you some idea of the reality of life for the masses under the thumb of what became Federation elites. They were so hungry for power to operate their fleets and synthesize food and products for their every whim that slave populations couldn't mine the dilithium fast enough. Later they resorted to using "obsolete" EMH holographic doctors as miners (Star Trek Voyager "Author, Author" S7 E20) to perform menial labor.
Congrats on the reupload 👍🏽 the part where the actor call the girls furniture. Made me think of “ squid game “ where the VIPs use people as furniture.
The original book's focus is more on overpopulation and the subsequent issues that stem from that -- an increasing wealth gap, homelessness, food shortages, climate change, etc. -- and there's a lot of that kind baked into the background of the movie even if they're not mentioned directly. The wealth inequality leads to rampant corruption and women selling themselves out as "furniture." A lot of people mock Heston's one over-acted line, especially since that one line spoils the entire plot of the movie, but there's a lot of significant social commentary going on. Very glad you to see how much of it you caught in a single viewing!
Love it
Haven't checked in for a while, Heather. Hope you are well. Much love from the Gold Coast
It has been a while since I've waved through the floorboards to you. 😄😄 Good to see ya again.
At least it’s low carb
I actually and honestly didn't know what 'Soylent Green' was (ok... I sorta did, but didn't know I did) I mean, I knew the term "soylent green" and I think I knew it meant "people food" or.... food made out of people? but I didn't know it enough to know that it was a thing... or a film... or an anything... I just think I knew what it meant if I had heard it.
I love this movie! How come you always pick my favorite stuff?
I always felt this movie was a pretty good adaptation of the book for popular audiences. Edward G. Robinson's character (Sol Roth) has an incredible journey here. I'm surprised we haven't seen this "old guy out of time" trope used more in recent fiction considering the post-Baby Boom demographic inversion most of the world is going through coupled with the pace of change.
Well, as a boomer myself the world isn't that different from when I grew up. It isn't a dystopian nightmare, people were fighting for recognition then as they are now, and the technological underpinnings were already in place for what we have today.
Keep room for the land. And I like your hat.
Apparently the title food works well as a diuretic in tablet form. Soylent Green is pee-pills.
