  • Just a short video of Scott Gentile of A2A running up a Comanche 400 prior to it's annual inspection. This is one of under 100 Comanche 400's around today, with a Lycoming 720 cubic inch engine making 400 horsepower. The engine is so powerful it will drag locked wheels on the pavement.

Both my grandfathers owned Commanche 400's, I got mine in 91 a late model 1965 with the IO-720-B1A that I had replaced with an IO-720-D1C in 2000. Complete gas hogg but an absolute blast and always the attention drawer anywhere. I was laughing my ass off when you started moving around and then did the run-up, I was like what is he doing without the tail tied down it will drag the wheels! Then It did and I almost lost it! I assume by now you have it flying, the best thing to do to show off is pull on the runway do a full stop, lock the brakes, full throttle when it starts sliding release the brakes by 300ft your airborne and almost pattern alt by the runway end. The downside is that the overhauls can be expensive. I have an A&P who works on mine just for the fact it is an IO-720 and he cuts me a break on labor by allowing me to get it ready for him. For those looking into buying one of these, you better have a deep wallet. A new IO-720-A1B cost US$113,621, with a rebuilt engine retailing for US$75,435 and a factory overhaul priced at US$66,289 and at 75% cruise power consumes 23-24.5 gallons per hour of 100L/LL.

I'm loving the steam gauges. To me that's a proper cockpit. The glass to me has disadvantages, you can't wear certain sunglasses as certain colors are neutralized, glare from the sun, too much information in one area to comprehend, electrical failure. I love the beast. A pilot at our airport had one and yes it was incredible to listen to. The power Is downright raw and emotional.

I actually got to ride in a 400 from Niagra to Linden, NJ back in 1967 when I was 13. Talk about speed. My father followed in his V-tail Bonanza. The owner said the plane was in the shop more than flying due to engine issues.

We operated VH-FOE a PA24-400 waaay back in the late 60s - early 70s - on paper runs, and it’s achilles heel was the hot start after refueling. What a nightmare. You had to flood it in order to purge the lines then full throttle with mixture in cutoff you cranked until it fired......hopefully before the battery collapsed from exhaustion.
The battery and starter motor got a thorough pounding but there was no other way of dealing with the heat sink effect on the fuel lines.

The 540, like the 360, is rugged for sure. The 720 is as well, but, cooling is an issue. Once we get it operational, we'll put an analyzer in it, study the data, and likely make some cooling improvements. If it runs cool, I would expect it would be very reliable

Great video, can't wait to see it in the air. Back in the 70's my Dad had 62 250 Comanche. He had a friend that had a Comanche 400 and on more than one occasion when we all flew some place for some of those "$100" hamburgers, The guy in the 400 had problems getting it to start for the trip back. Those "hot start" issues you hear about are no joke. Hope you can tackle that problem. The 400 is crazy fast and so much fun to fly. Good luck and hope it goes really well for you.

Yes they do, and I have the V35B but Carenado planes are just toys really. They have no underlying systems. Flying it is exactly the same every single time. With A2A every flight is different, because the aircraft ages, and can wear out and things can break. Carenado makes arcade planes. Beautiful, but still toys.
