    Get this: I painted my 68' MGB Roadster in my garage in, I think the late 80's. Well, sitting out in the elements and letting the Colorado and Montana weather eat away at it,.. It's time for another paint job. But man I swear I don't remember going through this kind of detail. Yeah, a lot of heavy spraying with a cheap sprayer and a 10 gallon compressor in my garage. I'm f'n surprised it lasted this long. Applied too thick and paint cracks all over the body. There was no CZcams to help and it was more of a learn as you go process. Folks today are sooo freaking lucky. All they have to do is hit a couple of keyboard steps and Viola ! ! ! Thanks for your video. I picked up a lot.

    Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. I'm a professional painter... of houses! And I've heard it can be very different spray methods, but it looks to be more similar than I thought. I'd be more interested in specs of the tips on the spray guns you use, I've heard vehicle spraying is much finer than household.
    Also one other question, generally when we spray a house we follow the exterior siding or interior walls quite the same way your guy is flowing around the car panels, but with one major difference that's kinda hard to describe without visual aid. But, we have a bit of a flourish at the end of each spray line. When you run into masking, it usually doesn't matter cause you can blow off into that as you u-turn and reverse directions. A few times I saw him stop dead in the middle of panels and move the opposite direction. Now if you have the precision of a perfect machine, I can't see this being a problem. However we've found it often causes build ups, drips, or at the very least thicker spots as for a second when you change directions you're spraying too much on that one spot.
    Our workaround is that "flourish" movement; say you're spraying from the left to the right, and need to reverse directions. At the end of the run going to the right, we keep spraying but kinda flip the angle of the gun in parallel to the wall rather than perpendicular, then do the same in reverse to start our line in the other direction.
    I'm just curious if that's just not a problem with cars? Or we're being just too perfectionist? Its possible the finer tip prevents this build up from happening. anyways, thx for the video!

    Thanks for the many videos - a great help for a DIYer. I am doing a car at the moment, only do it in my spare time so don't have the time to paint all at once. I am using acrylic primer, base coat and clear coat. My main question is, if I do the doors, bonner, guards etc until primer stage, how long can i leave it before applying the base and clear coats?

I've only ever painted a few body pieces from cars and a few motorcycles previously. i'm currently working on prepping my car for paint to do a DIY paint job in my garage this spring (also prepping my garage for this as well). Hi from New Zealand. Thanks for your great vids. Is there any reason the base is being spayed bottom to top on the doors, unlike the reverse which everyone seems to prefer? Cheers.

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  Před 3 lety

      I keep the wet edge moving. If I end at the bottom a a panel I start at the bottom of the next panel. If I end at the top of a panel I start at the top of the next panel. That has always worked well for me, but this is painters preference.

    Hi Donnie,Thanks for sharing your video. I'm Just looking for some guidance. I have a mate helping me with a bare metal 2 K (valspar) metalic full resto, on a 1964 XM falcon .We have experienced the misfortune of our base and clear not hardening and can be torn off like vinyl.(once i get a razor blade under it) We used 1K etch primer on the bare metal then Valspar HS35 surfacer/sealer ,blocked it with 400 and then primed that with etch again, rubbed it back with 600 and applied base/ clear. I now realise we should not have primed with 1K etch again but the same problem had happened before on the insides of the doors, without using the etch. It comes off easy & the high build surfacer/sealer seems to be very smooth after the paint is torn off.Thanks again on a great video

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  Před 5 lety

      I use 1K etch primer on bare metal spots before using primer or primer sealer, so that probably is not the problem. But if you sanded your primer surfacer, then I am not sure what the problem is. Did you allow flash time between coats?

    • @Mar-wt3di
      @Mar-wt3di Před 5 lety

      @@CarAddictGarage Thanks, yeah That could be what it is ,as he was only leaving the base dry for 5 minutes just read the data sheet and I think it says 20/30 minutes.Going to do a few sections just to see if we can eliminate suspected culprits

    Do you have to clean your gun between coats or is flashing for 10 min good enough and then you can do the second coat without the gun clogging? I suppose a couple of discharges in that time frame would be helpful.

    As I see it, You say if I am spraying farther away, I have to go slow, and if I get closer, I have to go faster. So if I am going slower, farther away. and the trigger is full blast, I must be wasting paint. It is going into the air. OR, I MIGHT BE OUT IN LEFT FIELD. Let me know.

    • @CarAddictGarage
      @CarAddictGarage  Před 5 lety

      No spraying further away is going to waste more paint. But in the middle of the hood or roof I have to spray further away because I can't reach as good with the correct angles. I also have to slow down since I am further away.
