Great discussion of Fischer. Would love to hear an episode on the book Endgame by Frank Brady.

My first chess book. I didn't understand fully what was happening at the time (I was 10) but I could see how dominant Bobby was over these matches.

  • @jeremiahtree-dweller7370

An observation regarding the discussion beginning around 1:11:30: The use of "memorable" just means that these games were special, unusual, or remarkable in some personal way. "Memorable" should not be conflated with "rememberable."

This quote: "It's not enough to be good player, you also have to play well", as far as I remember is from Tarrasch.

“People in jail everywhere deserve great sympathy” I just ran this move through a chess engine called (victims everywhere). A simple virtuous, blanket statement like this that makes you feel good fails I am sure more than half the time if you hold it up to what each person was convicted of. Not to mention the career criminals that are not and will never ask for forgiveness. When you say something like that you must remember the victims that get hurt by statements like this but are too afraid to speak up. ( Fear of sounding mean )
That being said I liked this platform loved the conversation I listened to the whole thing. I also think playing chess is a good idea for people in prison that doesn’t mean I should forgive them for raping anyone.

Not everyone who goes to prison is a rapist and you do not have the responsibility nor the right to forgive them for any crimes in question.

is this book good for beginners

I think it's ok for beginners, but maybe not a complete beginner. If you understand the basics; check, enpassant, forks etc. you can learn from it.

Had the book not long after it came out. I don't get the constant virtue signaling every time Fischer is talked about on this channel - it is tiring.

@@brucetowell3432 Via Frederic Friedel (Hamburg, Germany) we learn that Garðar Sverrisson, who may be regarded as Fischer’s closest confidant in Iceland, states that Fischer would never have considered bringing out a book such as My 61 Memorable Games without consulting him. Mr Sverrisson writes:
‘When I told Bobby about the forgery in early December 2007 he just became sad and disappointed, exactly as he used to react when he learned about slander or a similar betrayal. At that time his health was deteriorating, and we had other things to worry about than who might be behind this book.
When we discussed the possibility of having My 60 Memorable Games republished he was very much against using any improvements of his own or others (including computers). And changing the notation from the descriptive to the algebraic was out of the question.
We never saw My 61 Memorable Games, and I still have not seen it.’

@@jeremiahtree-dweller7370 Yes, I've read the account from Sverrisson, thanks anyway. I understand the world famous John G. White Chess and Checker Collection, at the Cleveland Public Library, also has a copy. International Master Lawrence Day thinks the book is legit and he even wrote a great review for his local news paper up in Toronto , Canada. BTW he also thinks the book was published somewhere in Canada, cause the book was sent to him from Canada. Winter I believe is someone with authority to comment! Thanks good luck! I had 5 copies at one time, am down to just 2. Hope you run across one, it's extraordinary! Oh thanks for the links but I believe I have visited that rabbit home!!:-) God Bless!
