Are the Days of Movie Theaters Dead?

  • While Memorial Day weekend is usually a great weekend for movies, this year saw quite a few box office flops, and much less turn out at the theaters.
On top of that, people have been more vocal about not wanting to see movies in theaters.
Are the days of movie theaters dying in front of our eyes? Or is this just all a coincidence?

I have zero interest in anything Hollywierd is putting out. The theaters are being hurt by the lack of quality things to show. I am not going to drop $40 a head for a piece of crap.

This may come as a surprise to people but you are not required to buy high priced popcorn and soda.
Number 2 , have you seen the prices of these items at county fairs and sports events?

I don't believe online comment sections represent real life

I am a movie theater fanatic I have seen 13 movies on the big screen so far in this year I will say in the 2020s now which streaming apps there is such an abundance of content so I feel like people don’t prioritize going to the theaters anymore. I literally had someone say to me when I said do you and your girlfriend go to the movie theaters he said “no what is this the 2000s we Netflix and chill”. People are forgetting the value of a big screen and then people complain about there being too many reboots and sequels but a lot of the original stuff goes straight to streaming now because those are dominating but they keep people in their house. I get it some people like the comfort at our home but let’s be honest there is nothing like the movie theater not even a in-home system. Maybe if you’re a millionaire you can get something close to a big screen in your home but that’s very few people.

While I do wish theatres all the best in trying to survive I find it hard to justify the the cost when I have my own Home Projector System and how quickly many films are turning up on my streaming services

I am from Toronto and a casual fan of the movies. I went to the new Planet of the Apes franchise movie at a Friday, 12:30 pm showing and there was only 1 other person in the theatre. Now, admittedly not a prime time but wow, how can you keep the doors open with attendance that low? I particularly wanted to see POTA in a theatre to look at the CGI which was fantastic.

I think fall guy is from a 80s tv show with lee majors

That is correct. Lee Majors played the Fall Guy on a mildly entertaining 1980's TV show.

Last movie I saw in theater was Uncharted when it came out . Nowadays I can buy all my stuff before I sent down (snacks alcohol etc) and watch the movie at home with friends and not with a crowded theater and raising prices in concessions. Also people in the theaters that use their phones during the movies is complete bullshit, you come to see a movie not post a status on IG for 6 followers that care about you 🤣

"Fall Guy" is not an original movie. It is a television IP that starred Lee Majors back in the 80's. Today's movies have become preachy, formulaic, and little more than spectacle. Today's televisions are large widescreen affairs with very high resolution. Add surround sound and cheap snacks, why would anyone go to the theater?

So many movies are available on streaming services within a few months so I haven’t been in forever… but I’ll go to the nice theater that has reclining seats and serves alcohol when there’s a great action movie to see on the big screen

It's not surprising. The movies aren't great and they're more expensive than ever. We need movies that are culturally relevant, not "guy does the John Wick thing and they undercut it with MCU jokes" or "Garfield except 3d and probably not as good". People are SO RUDE AND ANNOYING. Like dude, last year I went to an R rated horror movie and this couple brought in a crying kid. To console him, they gave him an iPad with Cocomelon WITH THE SOUND ON THE WHOLE TIME. It's hard to get excited about going see a movie in theaters when that's always a possibility.
I used to love going to the theater. It's freaking awesome. But I have a nice home theater and people are annoying as hell.
