Sometimes we play together, and it sounds so good, because of the 2 different sounds.

I have the rg470ahm. For it being a standard RG model it's great and if that's Ibanez standard I'm definitely going to be investing in a premium or prestige eventually. It's finish is killer the quantom pickups sound great dialed in correctly. Very responsive to gain but also having decent cleans. Overall it's one great deal 500$ RG vs a 1000$ American or Mexican strat. I can always upgrade tremelo and pickups down the road but as of now don't see a reason to as they do the job well. To me I think mainstream guitar brands in America better do something to make american instruments more affordable. I mean the RG Is literaly a super strat. With so many great guitars being made outside of America for prices that are are half or a 1/3 of the American counterpart.

It has several advantages actually. For one, if you get an Ibanez made in Japan (like Darrell's), the quality will be better than the MIA Strat.
If you're into heavy trem use, the Ibanez far exceeds the Strat.
      Tuning stability - Ibanez
Versatility - Ibanez. Though it's very easy to add humbuckers to a Strat.

It's really hard to compare two guitars with such different pickups, single coil for Strato, humbucker for Ibanez. They simply sound different first for that reason. I believe the main difference between the two gears is in how they are built. The flat neck in the Ibanez affect the action which can be very low and allow more speed in execution, especially in genres like metal.

Really great comparison -- in your solos they both sound amazing but the Fender is clearly overall brighter with more pronounced treble, while the Ibanez has a slightly thicker, darker tone with very smooth distortion. During the comparison that difference was especially noticeable in the #5 position, but they actually sound almost identical when both in the #3 position. The Ibanez never attains that jangly, twangy sound the Fender can do, but IMO distortion sounds much richer on the Ibanez.
Lastly, I just wanted to compliment your great playing in the solos. Really masterful stuff, and the type of music that I dream of playing someday.

  • @chelfyn
    @chelfyn Před 7 lety +23

One thing That doesn't come across is just how fast those ibanez necks are to play on. You can also bend quite a bit more before choking the note out due to the flatter radius. I have owned a few strats in my time (though not as good as this US one) and currently own the same RG as tested here, and I find the RG by far the most versatile, for all genres. They're defintely not just for metal.
They could really do with coil taps for for the front and back though, just to get that single coil sound, but thats not too hard a mod.
Obviously guitar choice is a very personal and often emotional choice, so if all your heroes play strats and you simple love how they look and sound, then thats the guitar for you. Me, I'm stoked with my RG, it's the best instrument I've ever owned.

IMO real guitarists play because they love to play. who gives a shit what they use. I've got a collection too, but I have 2 stage guitars. A Mayer custom strat and a PRS custom 22, between those and the rest of my rig, I can literally play everything from Kieth Urban to Dream Theater. I agree with others who say, both guitars are fine, they are just different. Overall the Strat has a brighter, more robust treble sparkle, in every position. The Ibanez has a warmer sound, less treble, less sparkle, which in some music sounds better. Because I love the brilliant treble or sparkling treble much like a Telecaster, I would probably opt for the Strat, but hey, it's obvious the Ibanez is beautifully built, and probably more technically engineered overall, especially their tremolo system. Both are wonderful guitars, which brings us back to the beginning, they are both great, just a slightly different presentation. If they were played on stage, no one would have anything bad to say about either one. Personally I have never given Ibanez a second thought, and after this demo, I think I was VERY WRONG, it's a beautifully designed instrument. My compliments on this particular CZcams presentation, it was perfectly executed, a truly GREAT comparison, perfectly volume matched levels, a very, very good comparison video indeed.

I have an Ibanez RG 1120 prestige, i play everything with it. The kind of amp does also a lot to the impression of the sound. Ibanez sound is more sharp and edgy, while the fender has a more darker deeper with more bass tone to it. Comes down to your preference. Both makes make great quality products

Let me preface this by saying I am not a professional. What I heard was the Strat sounds better when doing chords. It has a rich warm and bright duality. The Ibanez while sounding a bit flat in chord single note picking and fingering was clear as a bell and slicker. The take away: if you like blues, classical or classic rock the Strat is the clear choice but if you are a metal head (like myself) you have to go with the Ibanez. Thanks for the vid it was really cool!

Both these guitars are good and worth considering, and would do most jobs well. The tone differences are almost night and day; everybody knows subjectively what sounds better through their own ears for one's favorite style or genre. I suppose the 2 and 4 switch positions on the RG help you get closer to a Strat tone when you want. Going super fast on a Strat neck is a challenge for many players but obviously possible. However I noticed the Ibanez was not holding you back when you wanted to go on fast runs or tap. Newer players will probably develop speed and mobility for lines quicker on the RG due to the neck's slim/wide profile and flatter radius. IMO you also generally get more for your money with Ibanez given this choice today. Definitely works a bit better for my favorite music too. Good job sir, nice demo.

I use the Volume a lot and it does not have to be as close as on a Strat to do that (unless you have very small hands maybe).
I'd also say it's way too close and it's hindering or even impossible when I try to play the higher strings muted.
It really bugs me that everybody who does Strat copies always precisely sticks to the original design instead of making variations/improvements.

An RG was one of my first guitars. It was the first I bought. I was never super impressed by the tone. I bought a cheaper Jackson that sounded much better with the SD pickups and I later switch the bridge to a Dimebucker. It was excellent at that nasty Metal, high gain, shredding tone but also still had a nice set of warm single coils. I have never touched the RG. It was a friends that died and just never had the heart. I bought it from his Mom knowing it was his favorite but if I had to change anything it would be the pickups.

I prefer strat because of the full round sound. Ibanez is muddy for blues but it is good very distorted for rock.

That's NOT a "Floyd Rose" on that Ibanez. It's not even a "Licensed By Floyd Rose" tremolo. Ibanez has had their own line of tremolos since the late 80's. They used Floyd Rose on their low end models but most models now use a version of the Ibanez "Edge" system. In my opinion, Edge blows FR out of the water. Better quality in metal, craftsmanship, tune, tone, sustain and looks.

haxter3 Yes but, Ibanez re-engineered it and no longer uses the Floyd Rose patent. That's how much better it is. Calling an Edge a FR is like calling a Big Mac a Whopper. Both are burgers but preferences are different. Edge and FR are both "tremolos" but are in no way the same. So, any time I hear someone calling an Edge a FR I have to speak up!

Good comparisons. I have both a 1973 Strat and Ibanez gs450 from 1999-2000. I will say the Strat body is fantastic solid maple blonde finished. I will say the Ibanez neck is an excellent, precision, expanse of goodness.

I quit comparing different makes of guitar a long time ago. I use the guitar that looks cool to me and plays great which is Ibanez. I had a Squire that I loved but I always picked my Ibanez up to play 90% of the time. It felt more natural to play and got the tone I wanted with very little adjustments to my amp or the guitar. My Squire, I had to mess with to get the sound I wanted and never got it exactly.

Your videos are alwas great Darrel, and this one shows how lucky we are that there are great guitars with great and different sounds. In my opinion, a traditional strat has its own distinct sound which you can only get with traditional 3 x single coils, how ever, the new Ibanez Quantum pickups did infact surprise me, in position 2 (mid single coil + bridge humbucker coilsplit) you get a much better single coil and strat reminding sound that with the old INF serie pickups. Would be nice to have a blind folded comparison with a Fender Strat and Ibanez RG with Quantum pickups.

Thanks, Roxan
