  • Tyler Hoover's cheap Audi S5 manual is in the shop for a full service. Along the way Jonny sees that the intake valves are caked with carbon build up and he decides to use a walnut blaster to solve the problem.

      My first manual valve cleaning (lots of brake clean and scraping), took almost an hour per cylinder.
      Harbor Freight blaster with walnut shells... 1 minute per cylinder.
      Nuff said

      I turned a weed sprayer into a transmission fill for a German bottom fill transmission (MB 722.9 if anyone cares). Not my idea, found on CZcams. The most crucial part is having the correct level at the specified temp. Doesn't matter how you fill it. Love the great ideas found here.

    This is why I love Jonnys stuff :-)
    Euro cars, Especially German tend to be fairly simple for most things but working on them needs a holistic big picture approach, older British cars although far simpler need this as well because the apparent issue often isnt the actual problem at all as Jonny pointed out so if you take the whole view approach along with a bit more time when diagnosing issues you usually get to the actual issue without digging into stuff and wasting time chasing ghosts.

    Walnut shell hand soap is one of my favorite kinds. When I was a GM/ Cadillac tech we had this upper intake cleaner solution. Let it sit for an hour and a vehicle with 30-40k miles would smoke out the whole parking lot burning off the carbon buildup.

      Late to the party but I wonder how easy it would be to take an intake manifold from the junkyard and start cutting to make such an adapter. Especially ones made out of plastic. Then use epoxy to 'weld' on a short pipe for the vacuum.

    I decarbonized the ports and valves on my son's Audi A3 2.0 and to help prevent further carbon build up in the future I put a catch can on the EGR system. I highly recommend that every direct injection engine do both procedures.

    I helped a friend do a carbon clean on his 07 RS4, we did it the hard way... Soaking with BG and using picks and brushes... I told him we're never doing it that way again, we're using a blaster next time. lol

    We used to do walnut blasting on Olympus Gas turbine but as a Apprentice was sent to get the bag of walnuts, I thought it was a windup but no and the turbine blades where so clean.

    The walnut blaster adaptation was brilliant! I can't believe how clean the backside of those valves came out. How often should that be done? If I lived in Kansas, you'd have my business on my 2019 VW Arteon all day and night!

      Its common to use that for wal nut blasting. And I'm pretty sure its recommended every 60k miles for vw

    might as well change the front main also should do the valley pan gasket thats right under the oil filter housing that one usually leaks as well. The pcv is prone to leak as well.

    Hi Jonny, i got a spray container like the one you have, and i love it, save so much much money on wd40, and I'm getting another one for brake fluid. I bought a sure shot made here in america, and it's nice. I love your video's, but that epicenter garage is not for me, because i hate porche's because they all look the same, with big ole frog eye's. I only wish you would film more video's that are a bit longer, just because you are a damn good mechanic, and you do thing's right. G-d bless y'all.

    I still remember the dark early days of direct injection when walnut blasting didn’t exist and the only recourse was to use a dental pick. I would get charged straight time at shops that didn’t always want the job 😢

    Hey Jonny , honest question, does oil filter make any difference on euro's.I have a vw , when I do oil changes I always use liqui moly but its not cheap so I try to get the bundle packages with whatever filter is offered at the store.

    This is the first time I've heard of "walnut blasting".... that's crazy.... so was he blasting the walnut in and then sucking it out with a vacuum tube hose?

      Pretty much. The metal piece he was using is just an adapter for a shop vac hose to collect the blasting medium and gunk blasted off the valves. Crushed walnut hulls are a great abrasion medium for "sandblasting" something without damaging the underlying metal or risking introducing an abrasive medium into the engine. Way more eco friendly than alternatives like plastic pellets too which is a nice bonus.

      Each to their own. Some people say to do so, others say not to. All up to you. I've been changing oil and oil filters in my families 5+ vehicles without pre-oiling the filter and housing with no problems for the past 10+ years.

      @@EbonixD There's a lot of talk about whether removing the EGR valves on cars is beneficial or is harmful to the engine without recoding the ECU to tell the car the EGR is no longer attached. I never understood removing it. Yeah you won't have vapor, gunk, and other unburned gases cycling back into the intake to be burned off again and dirtying your valves but you'll be destroying the environment just bit more than you were before. In addition you still have to have a catch can installed requiring you to dispose the contents correctly somewhere (hopefully not on your driveway). The car manufactures have it there for a reason. Stop being lazy and or cheap and get your valves cleaned about every 30k miles.

      @@Recklessness97 ye I forgot to mention that a remap/ flash on the ecu is essential. in most cases I've heard your engine runs better and has more power after a egr delete but obviously your car will be producing more emissions.

    I'm trying to avoid the need for valve cleaning for as long as possible. My theory is it is crankcase gas gumming up the valve face. That gas consists of incomplete combustion products and oil vapor. So what I'm doing is only using using the highest detergent gas that I know of - Shell V-Power. Hopefully that will keep the injectors clean for an even uniform spray pattern to minimize incomplete combustion. I'm also changing my oil at 3K to keep it clean so the oil vapor contains less contamination. Does this strategy make sense?

      @@kraignadjkovic5494 yep, all engines have the same crap running through the intake and inlet track, difference being port injected cars have fuel washing over the valves to keep them clean where direct injected don't.

      What @Kraig Nadjikovic said. All direct injection vehicles (pretty much every new vehicle nowadays) have this problem regardless of make and model. This is one downside of direct injection vs old school port injection. With port injection fuel would "wash" over the valves keeping them very "clean" and efficient. It's recommended to get your valves cleaned around 60k miles, I would do it every 30k miles personally. If your car is turboed, then it's even worse.

    Great job but manufactures who did not test enough to know this would happen with direct injection should be sued in a huge class action lawsuit. This is well past routine maintenance

      Dry ice will not remove the hard carbon deposits. You need a hard sharp abrasive.

    The now defunct parts house called Bavarian Autosport (Bav Auto) sold a media blaster tank that was part of a kit exactly like the one Jonny used in this video. They offered 2 styles of port adapters- one professional quality made of aluminum which was much more robust and could be used for many jobs and a 3D printed version that was supposed to be a one-time use item. These port adapters seated into the intake port with a stepped design and did not rely on the shop vac to keep them in place. A wand with on off valve was also supplied with the kit. I used mine on an N54 engine in a 2008 535Xi with excellent results. Just got rid of the car. If anybody is looking for a 1 time used walnut blasting kit with aluminum adapter in perfect condition let me know. I'm done with Beemers forever!!!

      You still had to use a shop vac to get rid of the media though, correct? Sorry if this is a stupid question. This is the first time I've seen this process being done in the engine bay. I've only see part being blasted in a cabinet.

      @@josephcitizen4195 Yes, just like in the video, a shop vac hose is attached to the intake port adapter (duct tape works great) and when the vac is turned on it sucks out the walnut media and all the nasty deposits that were formerly attached to the intake valves and chamber. So, the port blaster and shop vac are running simultaneously. I used blue painters tape over the ports that I was not blasting to insure I wasn't getting any media into cylinder that did not have the intake valves completely closed.

      Yup, and they failed after fairly low mileage and 14 years, so they just aren't that great. Personally I have a Lexus 4.6 litre V8, same vintage as this, slightly higher output - doesn't leak oil, has direct and port injection, so no excessive carbon deposits - far better engine. German engineering is shit.

Without the Germans we wouldn't have our space program, our current main battle tank, the first jet, and much much more technologies thanks to the Germans. It's unmaintained German things that are shit. You rarely ever hear the first owner of BMW, Audis, Porches, etc complain. It's always the 3rd and 4th owners who buy the car 6+ years down the road with no maintenance and clapped the hell out expecting the "ultimate driving machine" after years of neglect and poorly maintained. American engineering is shit. Just like American beer.

      @@Recklessness97 Sorry, I should qualify that as "modern German car engineering is shit" - which has nothing to do with post WW2 era engineering - which yes they were brilliant 70 years ago, and back then even their cars were decades ahead of everyone else - but no longer. Brand new German cars are among the most unreliable every year in every major new vehicle survey - even Porsche have slipped a lot in recent years.

      @@Beer_Dad1975 I can agree with you on that. Almost all modern cars are junk, though some more than others. They now intentionally design cars to fail/break just outside the five year warranty period and full of plastics that have a pre-determined useful life to get you back to the dealer for maintenance or preferably buy a whole new car to restart the cycle. You pop the hood of these new cars and everything is covered and hidden away from the owner. Shit nowadays you can't even check your various fluid levels or change batteries without the dealer or expensive scan tools.
