  • Samel - Live At Metal Blast Festival 22 august 1992.
The band began in April 1987 as an old-school black metal act.
Xy and Vorph are brothers. Up to "Worship Him", Vorph was known as Vorphalack, and Xy as Xytraguptor. Later on, Vorphalack shortened his name to Vorph, and Xytraguptor to Xytras and then Xy.

I remember when Medieval Prophecy came out and how it was slagged off even (or typically for legacy matters...) by mags like Metal Forces (RIP). The final piece in the puzzle of European 1st wave BM, pre-NBM's 2nd breed.

To me it's the debut of 2nd wave, Worship Him is the real First album of the 2nd Wave not A blaze...

@@l.i.v.v4835 Just because Worship Him is from 91? The mostly slow or mid-paced tracks reflect a more original approach to the abstract of BM, it's not uniform, or pretending to be uniform just like the other guys in Norway did. Actually, the Swiss were on a league of their own, and it's a bit ridiculous trying to tag all this as 1st or 2nd wave, it's only Black Metal. Now the problem with some narrow perceptions is that if it's not blast beast, tremolo picking and throat shrieking, it's not BM. That's quite hastily stupid. For instance , if i referred here to bands i think WERE BM, back in my day, (1981-1984, right before the global Thrash explosion) i would probably be banned even by youtube. BM means an array of various things for many different people, and that's the way it should be, it's not a communist genre, in spite of Aarseth's relevance within the phenomenon....

@@jocksilver7 Fenriz once said of the album : Samael were on one of the bands that were feeding the black metal flame in a period when almost no one else did. Samael had a more occult feeling to it and definately weren't in any black thrash tradition and didn't really have a lot of death metal either. I think it's strange, people took the Mayhem/Darkthrone/Burzum road, I wonder why didn't more more bands take the Samael road, because that was definitely interesting.
      Enough said
