    I am nothing if not predictable so congratulations to those handful of people who knew in advance what this episode would be called, being part 2 of the previous one (which you can view here: • 159. Winter cruising o... )
    In this episode, my mystery Crew member (not Lorna!) and I continue our winter jaunt along the North Oxford canal from just outside Rugby, through Newbold and up to just past Brinklow.

    Watching from Long Island, NY, you don't know how much calm this brings me in such a stressed out life quarantined (March 2020) in our homes like many millions of Americans. It's a get away, a reminder of a happier time and innocence. thanks for your work and efforts. All the best of luck and health to you and your loved ones. Please, more.

    3:15 every time my family goes out on say a holiday or a sunday my mom invariably says "what are all these people doing out??" like we're not doing the same thing and it's a running joke. Your exclaiming "Another hardy boat - what is this in winter!?" has the same energy

    The new bridge is such a modern no character monstrosity compared to the charm of brick stone and iron work. Oh well. That's progress for ya.Thanks for the cruise.

    • @randomuser778
      @randomuser778 Před 5 lety

      I thought the same thing. As a yank, one of the (many) things I love about Britain is the antiquity of the place. Rather the functional antiquity _still in use_.

    • @ianmedium
      @ianmedium Před 5 lety

      I think that can be said of pretty much any new average architecture. I witnessed it in Vancouver when I lived there and sadly here in Vienna, no where is safe. Funny thing is that it all costs so much more than all the beautiful architecture of the past. I wonder how many of those houses will sell after Brexit!!

    • @sallyu1
      @sallyu1 Před 5 lety

      When we passed that area last year they were constructing the supports for the bridge and tgey were very big. I think that they anticipate that it will be used by heavy traffic. Maybe a brick bridge wouldn't be strong enough. It's just a thought.

    After watching No. 159, I suddenly had a thought for a possible future piece you might want to do: what do you do when you finish for the day, after a trip? I imagine you moor up, stoke the stove, and prep for dinner. Or go shopping nearby. And then a nice evening editing, reading, or relaxing. It might not necessarily be the most exciting vlog you've done, but it does round out the daily adventure. Anyway, just a thought.
    Binge-watching the last several vlogs. You've got quite the life for one to envy from afar in a cold Virginia, USA.

    • @darrenblois8495
      @darrenblois8495 Před 5 lety

      I agree. It would be interesting to see more of everyday life aboard: how to moor, checking the weed hatch, turning the stern gland, dipping the fuel stick, living aboard...

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 5 lety +1

      I have showed most of these things already on the videos.

    • @darrenblois8495
      @darrenblois8495 Před 5 lety +3

      @@CruisingTheCut Yes you have, to be fair. Just some viewer input that we continue to be interested in that stuff. I am especially interested in how you moor. We only ever used bollards or our own mooring pins, but now I see you often use these metal contraptions that fit into the armco. How do they fit in? I wonder about chafing the ropes. Speaking of ropes, don't the centre lines get caught up in the solar panels when you go through locks? I guess its just the ex-navy in me that is interested in lines and mooring.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  Před 5 lety +2

      I tend to use mooring chains which you just drop behind the gap in the armco, reach around and pull up then thread the rope through the holes in the end. I have centrelines on both sides of the boat so don't need to pull them over the panels, I just take up the rope on whichever side is needed!

    Enjoyed it again. A whole 'nother world. Different from anywhere here in the States, though I live near to the old Ohio and Erie canal system... long since out of service. Small parts of it are still open but while most of it is "there," it's silted up, overgrown and looks like instant death for those unfortunate enough to fall in. Your situation seems like a nice way to live! Thanks for sharing it.

    Watching from Vancouver BC, Canada. There is no equivalent to narrow boating out here. Watching your series--in no particular order--is a real education and an insight into an entire culture that I never would have guessed existed. Fun to watch, and I enjoy the humour.
    Watching is dangerous, though. I caught myself speculating about the practicalities of that lifestyle.

      And one time these canals & narrow boats carried products from all over the world from the British empire from across the world to shops factories & farms. And during WW1 & 2 they were used to carry armour, fuel & weapons to keep the war effort going. Highways of the Victorian times still used to this day.

I’ve caught up and watched all the videos #1 - #166 I do enjoy the cruising and journey vlogs rather than the maintenance and fire side chats but hey you can’t be nonstop I think I will survive. lol I am a landlover and my closest canal is in Hertford where the Lea Canal starts and goes down to London Limehouse Basin. My dream is when I’m older (I’m 30 at the mo) I would have a house and garden with private mooring and have my own narrowboat that I would have Rosie and Jim merchandise and an interactive duck on top! 😌🦆⚓️ ...... until then I’ll just have to live my dream through you but I’m now with you in real time and going to live seeing what this year brings... maybe CZcams and Norfolk Broads could help you canal hop it onto the Broads to go travel round there????? 😱😱🤞😁🤞

    My county in New York State had the Chenango Canal run thru it in the mid 1800's, it's long empty but I've walked and looked at many parts of it, and I've imagined how it looked when filled with water and boats. Your video's are wonderful as I can see just how a narrow canal would have looked back then. Great Britain was smart to have kept the canals, and smarter yet to work on restoring them for pleasure craft and the pleasure of those who live and walk beside them. Between the canals and passenger rail service America dropped the ball along the way.

    When I had my boat, in the summer on a weekend you were lucky to splash it in under an hour after getting to the ramp. And about the same when it came to hauling out.
    In the colder months, it takes longer to park the trailer than it does to splash the boat.

    David, another lovely video from my favourite CZcams. We spent the day in and around Shardlow today, walking up to Sawley Marina and stopping for a winters day picnic. Can’t wait to get the money together to live this life. It’s where me and my lass belong.

      I bought the Nicholsen guide for the grand canal and have been following along with it when he is in that area. (I'd like to have them all one day). It's the closest I'll ever get to a canal.

    It blew my mind..well, kind of...when I read in the FAQs that you are going on the right side with your boat. I honestly did not notice that difference to road traffic in GB. I had a nice chat with a cab driver in London a couple months ago; we were making fun about who is going on the right side of the road (I'm german btw), but when watching the boat traffic, I did not notice them going right, just until now 😀

      Phil Jehmineh Yeah, on 95%+ of narrowboats, the throttle is along the left side of the boat, so one hand on the throttle, one on the tiller places you in a ‘left-hand drive’ position, and passing to the right becomes natural.

    Really enjoying your blog in the snowy cold winter in Montreal. We almost had a holiday on a long boat, but the boat we were supposed to rent was damaged, so was replaced with a cabin cruiser and we went from just above London to Oxford and back. We spent many evenings watching a couple or more of your blog, I feel like we have experienced the canals. Thank you for sharing and as we came to the last one this week, are hoping you will soon be back.

    aww, The tunnel with a path on both sides has the right one blocked off by an iron gate/door thing. It does look pretty cool with vines all over it though.
    I hope their building some shops and places for people to work in this new housing district.
    In Canada and I'm sure the US too they build up housing districts that are only useful if you own a car.

    Another nice video. I wish the government would demand that new bridges fit in with the surroundings; i'm fine with them being made of steel and concrete, but they should be cladded in stone / brick.

    Thank you for another excellent presentation. Have you considered a wool hat or cap. There is an extraordinary amount of heat loss from an uncovered head. I spent many years in the elements, and keeping the head covered works wonders.

    Lovely vlog, the right winter clothes could make this a very easy time to do your travels with so many boats moored. With 136,000 subscribers several companies may be happy for you to wear their clothes. I hope you enjoyed seeing you friend having a private life in your case is tricky.
