I just completed my collection of the classic series on DVD (mostly Region 1s, a few Region 2s, and a few Blu Rays of the last releases). I expect that The Celestial Toymaker will be the last, and I've pre-ordered it and it will arrive once it's released. It's a big collection, but it's worth it.
I'm not inclined to trust streamers and I want to OWN, not RENT.

The best way to watch "classic " Dr Who is to have been there at the time it was broadcast, Grandstand, Juke box Jury, the Pink Panther (or Tom and Jerry) Basil Brush followed by Dr Who, after waiting a whole week for Saturday to come round again.

I did it rather oddly starting at Spearhead from Space watching through to to Survival then going back to Unearthly Child but I am paused at Evil of the Daleks waiting for the DVD of the Abominable Snowmen. I do a mix of Britbox,DVDs and audios.

I watched it by collecting VHS cassettes and recording off the TV, then collected all the DVDs, and now I've stepped up to collecting the Blu-rays. I like the convenience of Britbox but the quality of stream is poor. I recommend watching Terror of the Autons to Survival, Then jump back to Unearthly Child and proceed, as if you made it that far you're a real fan and will appreciate the rough with the smooth!

Starting with the colour era is definitely a good idea. But don't skip series seven, start with Spearhead From Space!

I couldn't stand the bloody packaging that BBC Worldwide did with the later releases of Dr Who on VHS to tie in with 1996 tv movie. By 1997, all the range was altered, and Colin Howard's stunning artwork was replaced by shoddy looking packaging done on computer. I remember buying The War Machines on VHS, when the BBC switched over to the new look design, and I was gutted. It just looked tacky. Then came the DVD releases with even worse images on the front cover. Most of them were done by Clayton Hickman, and those DVD covers looked shit. It's only more recently that the artwork on the blu-ray sets look more fitting than the early, mid to late 00's DVD covers. The VHS tapes had great artwork on them by some great Who artists. All the BBC was worried about at the time was re-branding Who after the failed tv movie, even though the BBC had said it was a success in the ratings on BBC 1. But to the executives in the BBC, the tv movie proved a costly failure, considering it failed to ignite interest in the massive US TV market where the BBC wanted the show to succeed.
