Ja, ze is uitgekeken op het leven en probeert zichzelf te verdoven met diverse middelen. Wat dit lied uiterst ironisch maakt. In het stuk over Elsie laat ze zien dat ze wel degelijk weet dat deze levensstijl gaat eindigen in een vroege dood. Desondanks kiest ze liever voor een leven van opwinding in het cabaret, dan het saaie "echte" leven. Ze heeft de keuze om met Cliff een normaal leven te beginnen, maar in dit nummer kiest ze voor het cabaret, hoe verwoestend en toondoof het soms ook kan zijn.
Pia is pure talent... A total STAR.

I think the horror was clearly implied in the Hollywood version and not necessarily less effective than this very obvious and underlined version

Dit is zeker een heel goede interpretatie. Maar als ik naar de tekst kijk vind ik de Nederlandse vertaling uit de jaren 80 beter.
