Mach Loop - The Official Guide
Images in this video were all shot using a Canon 1DX MKII and a 100mm - 400mm MKII Lens
BRIEF: This video is a snapshot of a 2-day visit I made to the Mach Loop (Wales) on the 27th & 28th Jun 2017. It's fully intended to offer the viewer an insight into what they can expect if they're planning a similar trip. Nothing is a guarantee though!
This short film is fully intended to capture the emotions and dramas of visiting the Loop.
ADVICE: This video explains how to find Cad West/East. Where to Park, but more importantly than that how to take the pictures.
We cover it all...
WHERE IS IT?
WHERE DO I PARK?
HOW FAR IS TO WALK
WHAT EQUIPMENT?
WHAT CAMERA?
WHAT LENS?
WHERE CAN I STAY?
CAN I CAMP THERE?
This video and accompanying web page covers it all!
COMMUNITY PROJECT: This video is unlike every other video. I want to share your experiences with others. Got any videos you want to share? Any Pictures? Any advice you feel will be appropriate?

Gary Gough sorry if I missed it.... where exactly in the U.K. Is this? It's absolutely beautiful country!
Hi Ed, The Mach Loop or Machynlleth Loop consists of a series of valleys in the United Kingdom in West-Central Wales.
All the info and more is on my web page... garygough.co.uk/mach-loop-2
Hope this helps, Gary
great video, what do you do about focus?
Superb video Gary...when is the best time to go? Cheers
K
Sounds to me a huge debt of gratitude is due to that farmer. People who can’t respect this gentlemen’s property and fencing could easily destroy this rare privilege. I would be one for setting up a donation bucket for the farmer and send him a letter of appreciation annually. It kind of like asking for hunting privileges here in the US on farmers and rancher properties. The interlopers ruin it for so others.
That's called human nature, unfortunately. We certainly know how to mess things up. Glad you enjoyed the video. There is more info here too... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Slightly different here in terms of access to land in the UK because of public rights of way. However ,the point you make is an excellent one about respecting the countryside and peoples land and livestock. I was taught always close the gate behind you from a very early age and also domestic (not working) dogs and livestock don't mix.
I watch a lot of these Mach Loop vids; it never gets old. In days gone by, was tramping in them thar hills! lol
Good stuff...thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Excellent video, thanks for taking the time to do it!
Great video Gary, very informative. Love seeing all your vids and pictures.
Great guide. Loved the enthusiasm. Thanks for the tips!
As a regular in the Loop I'd just like to say there is no animosity towards people coming there for the thrill of seeing Low Level flying. I have and always will answer questions and give advice freely to anyone who asks but the one thing I stress is to be prepared. Walking on the hills is not like walking around your town. The number of people I see with trainers or other unsuitable footwear...even flip flops...is unbelievable. Yes it's summer and it can be nice and warm at the base of the hill but even going slightly higher and the temperature and wind can become an issue. I realise MOST people use their common sense but it's the selfish and ignorant that are going to spoil the Loop for all. Easy things to remember will make it easier for all to continue to enjoy it...Don't block the layby at Cad West...lorries use it to let the traffic flow along the road...don't park on the road if the layby is full. Police are taking steps with those that do. Stay on the tracks/paths...don't climb over fences the farmers have put them there for a purpose. Take your litter home...you carried it up...take it down. Don't block other cars in...some people are not there all day. Close all gates after you...the number of times gates have been left open is unbelievable. Don't block gates...farmers need access at any time. Never ever fly drones in the Loop...it's a Military Low Flying Training Area...jets don't always come from the expected route...believe it or not there have been instances of idiots doing this ! Not difficult is it? Following the above means everybody can continue to enjoy the Loop.
Well said Dave. I cover pretty much everything you've mentioned above on my web page here -----> tinyurl.com/y7pr8gxc
I'll be making more videos and I will ensure I include things like health and safety and the issue of litter etc.
What about the poor buggers who just want to enjoy a walk on Cader Idris?
Dave Sinnott jun
I am an experienced hill walker and I’m well aware of how to dress. In any event that has nothing to do with my point. The point is that people hill walk to enjoy nature. I live near Cader Idris and I feel I should be able to enjoy my back yard without this startling “boom” as you put it. It is incredible arrogance to assume this kind of intrusion is acceptable
It blows my mind that people would actually think it's a good idea to fly a drone in the Mach Loop. Such selfishness.
Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. 6:32 Even without the aircraft, it looks like a beautiful place to sit, drink hot tea, and just relax while the earth rotates.
Thank you for the information and it is so well presented. Hopefully one day I'll be able to get there.
Thanks for the amazing pics. The Typhoon is one heck of a beautiful aircraft. When i used to fly Tornados and flew in the loop (or roundabout as US aircrew call it ) I was always amazed at the number of diehard aircraft enthusiasts perched on the hilltops. Now I am retired and miss the flying but still my heart is up there in the GR4. Again fabulous shots and helpful for anyone wishing to join in. .
So glad you liked it. Ex Aircrew Christine?
Gary Gough yes I was in he RAF for 15 years flew Tornado for 7 years. My heart is still in the cockpit really. Will be gutted when the Tornado is retired in March.
@@cristinamorenolamin3217 Oh wow that's amazing. I served for 12 years. Whilst I was only ground crew I managed to get a 30-minute flight in a Harrier. That's my claim to fame :)
Gary Gough , Harrier is still amazing even now. We aircrew totally depended on groundcrew to get airborn. Thanks for your help. Have a great day.
Lucky Lady Christine ☺
Perfect guide. Thank you. This lets anyone enjoy the whole thing live at the sceene. Cheers from Hungary.
Outstanding! First time seeing this and just thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks so much!!
Incredible pictures!!! Thank you!!
Love the video Gary. I'm in New Zealand and just saw your British & Irish Lions Rugby Team heading for home tonight. I work at Auckland International Airport. The Mach Loop has become a "Bucket List" event for me. Hopefully all the aircraft aren't electric drones by the time I make it there.
lol they'll all be un-manned too :(
If you can get across the pond you'll love it :)
Very interesting video with some great tips Gary. Thank you.
Steve 'Kaboobi' Roo - cheers Steve, you're welcome

Thank you
Excellent guide Gary. Thanks for taking the time to help others :)
You're very welcome
Thanks so much, Gary. We're in the states and are planning our first out of country family trip this summer, and my daughter suggested the UK. Once I immediately realized that I'd be checking the loop off my bucket list, and your site has been instrumental in helping us plan. This will likely be the last chance in my lifetime to see it, and greatly appreciate what you've done in helping us get there to enjoy it!
I have written a complete guide. Hope it helps... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop/
Hope you guys were able to make your trip and enjoy your UK holiday 👍
Thanks so much for this video! Hope to make the trip someday.
Brilliant, exactly what I needed. Plan on taking my boy up there in late summer. We're having our summer hols early this year so it frees up time later in the year for fun.
What a fantastic video, and a fantastic presenter. This is something I really want to do (only found out about it about an hour ago!!) as a keen photographer, with about a year's experience but have had a lull in inspiration over the last 7 months since my Dad passed away. He got me into photography and I have inherited about 20 cameras. Last June he bought me a Lumix G3 which I love. I will be taking that and maybe a few others, just need a more suitable lens. This video has gotten me excited again, thank you and you have a new subscriber.
Stunning landscape photography! Thanks.
It is indeed a beautiful place 👍
Thank you for taking the time putting this video together. I enjoy aviation photography and just learned about this awesome spot. While it's a long way from Sydney, Australia, where I reside, I've put it on my future must visit sites. Cheers mate.
Watching these videos brings back wonderful memories. My dad was in the Air Force. I use to watch the Jets and various air craft do there training.
Wow! You got some beautiful shots of that Typhoon. Great job!
So glad you enjoyed the video. There is more info here too... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Thumbs up ere' Gary, good information and plenty of advice on capturing these shots. Here in Spain we are in the flight path of the Spanish Airforce but they fly too high even thou we have mountains!!!! Amazing photographs! Many thanks for sharing :)
Thanks again, very kind

Excellent guide to mach loop. The video is very well put together and your choice of music within complemented the various sections of the video highlighting the action and the drama. Well done.
Love your energy and enthusiasm Gary, I would love to visit the Mach loop and this video has made me want to go even more!!
I just learned soo much on accident.. it is insane how good you are at explaining photography.
Very kind, thank you
Quality vid Gary, clear commentary, very well put together. Wife loves the aircraft and wants to live on the Mach loop, which we probably will do soon!
lightespeed - an understanding wife, she's a keeper ;)
Thank you _very_ much for that video and all the informations you shared.
Effin A!!!!👍
Mr Gough, Thank you very, very much!!
Loved the video and it answered a lot of questions about access and conditions. You deserve recognition for promoting tourism because I know I'm not the only one thinking of coming to the loop.
Thanks for saying and I'm glad you enjoyed the video - The web page has even more info tinyurl.com/y7pr8gxc
Cheers Gary

Thank you Darrel
So useful information. Thanks!
you're welcome. Thanks for the support. Happy New Year
8:08 that dog is an absolute legend!!
Great video Gary Brings back memories in the 70s I lived in Hereford and we used to have a lot of low flying over the city, one afternoon I actually got bussed by a couple of low level Harriers while returning to the bakery in my large red and white Mothers Pride Van they did a couple of passes from behind then waggled their wings as much to say got ya scared me to death
Thanks for a great video
Best regards
John Brown
Sydney Australia
lol sounds like fab memories. I used to be in the RAF and I've actually flown in a Harrier. So lucky
More info here of you need it www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Great video and thanks for making this info available to all. Chances of me making it up there are slim but now I know how. 👍🏻
Phenomenal Gary.... seen a picture of this in a camera magazine... now I know where to go.... love it
Wow....just wow man....been wanting to do mach-loop for years, this is sooooo helpful' many thanks brother :-)
Gary Gough 1 second ago
So glad you enjoyed the video. There is more info here too... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Great video, well done Gary. Brought back many memories of working on the Tornado back in the 70's! I was in the management agency in Munich pushing paper and it is amazing that 44 years after first flight of Tornado it is still doing things like this. Not sure I'll ever get to the 'loop' as it's a long way from Aus so keep the stories coming. Clive Tudge.
Glad you liked it Clive. I was in the RAF in the eighties and loved it then too. Although for me it was more heli's and the incredible Harrier. Cheers
I was at Boscombe Down early 80's testing the Sea Harrier Blue Fox radar (or the Blue Circle as we called it), then in Tornado office in London and then Eurofighter Flight Control System in Germany. Happy days. Were you at 1 Sqn?
Thanks Gary, For a fantasatic and informative video, I'll be hopefully be giving this a try this year
Thank you - More info here f you need it... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Great video Gary. Thanks for all the information. Hope to get there some day.
Hi John, thanks. It's worth a visit even if you don't see any aircraft, if you know what I mean :)
Gary, Thank You from across the pond. As an amateur photographer your video was deeply appreciated. To those talking ill about Gary, your opinion means about as much as used toiletries. Thank You again.......
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you
Great Video Gary, and some fantastic Photographs, and as for the negative comments about the information you share as far as i'm concerned everybody has the right to see and Photograph their tax payers ££££s flying past. Keep up the great work
Cheers Graham. The Facebook brigade are fuming that I have divulged their secret, oh dear. To be honest it’s water off a ducks back to me. There are wars and a hell of lot of suffering in this world so why should I be bothered by a few silly children’s comments? Love the Tax Payers analogy - Well said that man.
Just wanted to confirm, all public land, right? They can go f themselves...
Graeme Cave great comment, well said 👍🏼
All land belongs to someone.
@tectorama..only because they either stole it, or bought it off people that stole it. I believe that's called handling stolen goods, but as it seems there is little chance of getting our property back, I'll settle for reasonable access to national park land, obviously respecting the rights of landowners, and ensuring livestock are safe, and no damage is done, no litter left.
A great video, well made and presented, thanks for all the information, thanks a lot.
Cheers Peter, very kind of you to say
What a brilliant and informative video. I am setting off down there for the first time and I will follow your suggestions. Thank you.
Wow! I never knew a place like this existed until by chance I stumbled across your videos. A trip to this place is now on my "bucket list" firmly at #2. Thank you for sharing this with the world!
Finally got up to the loop today and we got so lucky!! 12 passes, 4 different planes!
Thanks for this video, we went to cad east following your advice for the farm track and it was perfect! 👌🏻👌🏻
That is awesome! Glad it was helpful and so glad you had a great day 👍👍
Fantastic video Gary thanks will defo try next year.
Absolutely beautiful mate, well done, and thank you!
Many thanks!
Thank you very much for the information being retired RAAF lays wanted to go and see this but age has me know so got to do with all your and other photographers shots stay safe and enjoy
Lovely comment. The footage available is just as good as being there if you turn the speakers up.
Thank you. I''ll be making more videos soon. And ditto to Steve's comment
Thank you for that video. That's my dream to go there. :)
Cheers
Thanks very much. I feel I've been and seen all the best bits without the long waits. Well planned and presented.
Thank you Peter, very kind. I have compiled even more info here... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/

I have compiled even more info here too... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Gary Gough thanks for link... appreciated and hopefully make one lil 9 year old buzzing this summer! 👍
Hi gary, great video. Just want to add a commeut taking your litter home with you, its our responsibility to make sure the place is as you arrived, wherever you go. Not sure about others talking about elitism, ive always been led to believe the regulars up on Cad East/West are quite friendly and willing to advise on camera settings without prejudice. I look forward to my first trip up tjere with a camera soon, and thanks for the video..good stuff!
I will definitely mention the litter thing on my web page. Thanks for reminding me. All the people iv'e met at the Loop have been brilliant. Iv'e met some great guys. The regulars will offer great advice too. If you do want to go to Cad East, just be aware that if you're not there before 7am the car parking places will be gone.
Hi Gary great vid always wanted to go up the Mach loop ,thanks for showing me where the best places are 👍
Great video thank you for sharing this and amazing photo's
Thank you more info here if you need it... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Gary,Your recommendations are spot on. I have been shooting action photography for over 40 years (retired now, phew) and I accept your choices and suggestions perfectly. I am so happy to see you taking time to give people ideas and suggestions to help them make great photos of an iconic and never boring subject. May you always have perfectly framed jets and tastefully blurred backgrounds, and may your camera always take beautiful images.many thanks Joe USA.
Hi Joseph, very kind of you to say Sir, thank you. - More info here f you need it... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Great job.
Thanks Gary
Very well done. Your thoroughness and thoughtfulness is appreciated.
Cheers
What really tips and advice. Excellent video. Thank you
Awesome video! I loved it. Thinking of making the trip from the US. Grew up in the UK but haven't been back for a long while. Dad used to fly the Mach Loop. Would love to come back and get some pics.
Oh wow what a great tale. I assume your Dad was in the US Air force? If you pop over, let me know.
what did your dad fly during his military years?
Great video
Cheers Paul
Great video, very informative and well put together. Great advice on parking, camera settings etc. Nice work!
Thank you for saying - more info here if you need it... www.shootsmart.co.uk/mach-loop-wales/mach-loop/
Beautiful pictures and fantastic information. I would love to visit there one day. I always dreamed of being a fighter pilot. I have been infatuated with fighter jets since I was a kid and I am now 66 and still the same way. Thank you so much for this video. I am now one of new fans!
Great vid. It would be helpful to have a map shown to spot Cad East and West, and in fact the whole route.
Thanks. There is more info here... garygough.co.uk/mach-loop-2
I've been going to the loop for 35 years, nobody owns the hills, they are there for everybody's entertainment, although I've met some really a obnoxious people over the years, the hills are for fresh-air and fun.
Great video Gary,great edit.
Simon whittaker - never a truer word spoken. Cheers Simon
Another great video Gary, great info on both location and gear/settings. Its somewhere I have always wanted to go and you have certainly enthused me. I will try and get there this summer, cheers again
You're very welcome Ian. Hope you see lots and have a super time
cool thanks for this
Thanks for saying, very kind
An excellent, well put together video with good advice and delivered with enthusiasm. I'm not on Facebook or Twitter and the like so I don't know what people are getting upset about, could someone
enlighten me? It's not as if LFA7 is a secret, the RAF have been using it for donkeys years and people have been going there for years to photograph the aircraft, some people even used something called
35mm film! ( look it up on Wikipedia kids.) I myself have only been going for a couple of years and so far have managed a total of about 15 days. I've not met any really grumpy guys, or gals, most people
have been great to chat to and some really go out of their way to help. On a recent trip a complete stranger loaned me a 32 Gb card as I forgot my spare. We are all there for the same great hobby in
beautiful surroundings. So lets not get worked up about nothing. I saw nothing in the video to get upset about, the Loop has been 'advertised' before, not least on social media, and it will be again. The only thing I get upset about is when people don't respect the countryside, but that upsets me on all my travels anywhere. So if you've never been it's a great way to spend a day. But be warned, in my 15 or so days I've sat there all day and seen nothing on a couple of occasions. Nice views though and good banter. And once again, great video Gary.
Hi David, Very kind comments and thank you for taking time out write it. I'm flattered to think that some Facebook people presume my video will bring thousands of new photographers to the Loop. lol Like you said, I haven't divulged any new secrets for heavens sake. I found out about the car park at the back of Cad East myself from a Hotel Website. go figure!
Every time I go there I only meet nice people too. Going there is more about the crack. If you see some aircraft then it's a Brucy Bonus and we all know :)
@@GaryGough Generally in cases like this negative comments get far more attention than they deserve. Usually they are done by a malcontent.
Fantastic and informative we struggled up the muddy hill on foot, wish I’d seen this first - now we’ll go again as we loved it!
Thank you for provide all those information 🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’re welcome 👍👍
Hi, Can you please add the GPS coordinates of the gates?
just use google earth? It's rly not that hard to find if you follow the roads there :D
Hey, great video. Very informative and clearly shows the time and effort behind those super shots. Thanks.
Brill, thanks for saying
Great video Garry. This is now a bucket list place to go before I get too old!
Sideshow77 - you're never too old. 👍🏿
This is amazing! If this was in the US, it would be located inside military airspace, nobody would be allowed to come within miles, there would be signs reading something like, "trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again!", and there would be CCTV security cameras blanketing every square inch for miles!!! I've checked, visit the new World Trade Center in Manhattan, and skydiving off my bucket list, it seems now that after the Grand Canyon, I'm gonna have to go to Europe! I'll have to decide if I wanna do that before or after Alaska...
Sounds like it's a huge bucket list, good on you. It's a very unique place to visit. I'm sure it'll just take one piece of Terrorist activity to render it private with signs up similar to yours. Well, maybe not quite worded the same... Our signs will just say "please stay away" We're a little softer in the UK ;)
Cheers for taking the time to watch and comment. Means a lot!
certaindiaster59 oh. Come on. Not true. We are not all like that. Chill bro. Life’s good.
This is demonstrably untrue.
oh dear think that you stirred up a hornets nest here lol. people will get upset with this openness. but good on ya Gary.
barrie jones - Hi Barrie, I've already been banned from a couple of FaceBook groups because of the content of my videos. I'm just being honest in every part of this video. My webpage will encourage people to stay at the Farmers official digs, so I'm offering a little back too :)
Gary Gough how childish some people are what do they gain ?, I was on joking too. I passed comments on your first loop video
You'd think some of these guys own the hill... you have just as much right to be up there as them. Hate the 'I know more about all this than you' attitude up there from the odd person. Shame these planes can't take these people out as they go through.
Steve Clark isn't that a bit over the top ?especially with the austerity measures in place ? oops political 😀
I'd say it's not hard enough!
Great, informative video. Thank you very much! Been on my list for a while and can't wait to go one day. Thanks again ☺
Wayne Punter - cheers Wayne, very kind
Thanks Gary. It's pretty clear you take your own advice and have a ball!
Always James. Cheers 👍
What a great video, Gary! Thanks for posting it!
Cheers Stephen
