Thank you! I’m going through the exact same problem. I thought it was the tub seal at first. So I replaced it and it was still leaking. I noticed the shaft seals did not look very good as I was putting it back together. So now I know how to replace the shaft seals. Thanks again.

FYI: parts suppliers are not showing that part number for the upper seal. I believe sears deleted that part so DIY would not rebuild 70 or 80 series washers.

You have the best video for this! THANK YOU, the only video for this! And I knew you were right when you said that smaller loads did not leak... and I see you have that black goo over everything too. My washer is 23 years old! You made my day with this. I also replaced the tub seal. Same problem. Exactly.. thanks!

cartonvera, your video is the only one online dealing with these seals and oil leaking from this area. I reassembled everything and a dribble of grease water came out... now I AM WORRYING!

Keep those old top load Whirlpool washers. They last forever. The newer front load high efficiency units don't last.

if you are doing this step, you should know how to disassembly or you can look up how to take apart everything, thanks

@@cartonvera I'm a novice at this type of issue but I've replaced my tub seal and it still leaks. I ran across your video but I can't find anything about the disassembly/reassembly so I'm afraid to try this fix.

When I made the video I was assuming people were able to disassemble up to this point. It is not hard at all. Order the 2 seals I provided you in description and links. Lower the transmission and also clutch. You have to take tub out and tilt washer. Also take motor and pump out. Not hard at all
      Please like my video thanks

I had to clean out the grease it was full of soap and lint and dog hair where do you put new grease and how much and where do you get it. I am new at this (59 year old woman) never did this before, kind of fun but 23 years worth of gunk to clean out, yuck! Broken clutch, direct drive coupling shredded, agitator washer shot... fun weekend!

When You have an oil leakage inside the tub yo Will need to change the Upper seal, when it leaks oil out of the tub it could be an issue with the gear case seals.

If you go on Craigslist, OfferUp, LetGo, etc., you will find people are always giving away free "broken" washing machines. I just take the parts from the free broken washing machines and fix my own washing machine for free.

FUCK. I have the same washer made by whirlpool. The shaft seals are surrounded by huge amounts of rust.

The tubing is called a BASKET DRIVE and the screw next to it is a DRIVE BLOCK.
