The Art of Playing Support

- Support players often get the short end of the stick in the history of CS:GO. But they shouldn't. After all, they often do all of the dirty work to make their teammates shine and are necessary to the basic functioning of a team. Today, we'll be giving them their flowers and I'll hopefully convince you to give support a chance.

Even in MM it's great to pick up on supportive principles because you're not always going to be the main fragger or play the spots that you want. Being adaptable and having good supportive utility will always be a good contribution
🤓
@@whizma4636found the bot that baits, doesn’t flash for teammate, takes too long to trade then blames team when he loses 6 1vX per half
Yes, espacially as an soloQ main you have to be able to do everything. I can't do one thing perfectly, but every role far better then the average Player.
I love playing support. I drop weapons for teammates to build good morale. I'm not the best aimer, so I like to learn a lot of utility to put myself in a good position.
There is one more thing to know for support players and that is the fact that they are usually the guys that are left in the clutch the most. It is important to build good decision making, as well as to know how to properly smoke the bomb on the default spots.
For someone who loves playing Vertigo and Ancient, playing support is essential
only real roles that exist in cs are awp and igl, apart from that everyone just has to do the task at hand
honestly based opinion
however, i would argue that it's still important to learn the general concepts of each role so that when tasks suited for those roles come up, you will be more prepared
this has nothing to do with the video. youre talking about role priority. in a live match your priority is to fill the role thats needed at the moment, youre right. but natural tendencies to be in certain spots in different situations make someone a support/entry/lurk. playing support is to have the natural tendency of being in a supportive position. in game the support player might get into a situation thats typically considered a high fragging position but usually hes not.
I agree. To some degree there are soft CT roles such as B anchor/rotator and soft T roles such as lurk/entry but they shouldn't be mixed with hard set roles such as being support in moba/rpg games.
@@timo6762 i agree 100 percent
Kinda but entry and lurker are two completely different roles that have a lot of overlap but the main part of them is completely different. Both are good for info but one is so heavily reliant on good internal clock, the other is so important to win a round on T but can almost always look like they do nothing and die. Thankless task to be entry and just sacrifice yourself for the good of the team but it's only a role because nobody wants to do it so the people who can do it well and maybe even pick up a kill or two when they are expected to get 0 makes them so important as a real role. Same with lurker, if you can get info or give fake info to the enemy or catch a gap and flank the defenders or find a free site/stack to direct your teammates, maybe not in lower ranks but higher level and pro 100% this is a skill. Timing is so important in this game and some people like Ropz have incredible timing (helps that he is good at other stuff too lol)
I can’t believe you didn’t mention TACO in the intro, he practically defined the roles of support players during his SK glory days
sadly i can't put everybody, i would if i could!
Agreed. TACO is even praised by his former teammates, especially Coldzera, for his role and playstyle.
Sometimes, numbers only show one side of the story.
Honestly, for a channel this small the level of production on this video alone is as good quality as some of the bigger names in the CS youtube scene, well done!
I appreciate the utility breakdown, though I feel that at high levels *every* player is expected to have good util. The support is just the one who takes the "worse" spots on a map, both T and CT. The star player gets to do what they want, the support reacts. This means if simple wants to fight then perfecto may throw a flash, but when taking space perfecto goes in first and simple gets the trade. Most teams have the best "util" stats on the AWP, as they throw scaling flashes in an exec, and some of the best utility knowledge players are ropz and m0nsey, not exactly considered classic support players.
That being said I don't want to just hate on this video, as there is a lot of useful info for players. At low levels (and definitely in solo-q) your teammates often won't know util, so you end up being the one to throw all of the lineups. Your teammates may also play way too passive (nobody wants to go in first and die) so your tips on being an entry are also very useful. More players should learn to be selfless like these great supports!
this vid is good , might start to learn more util usage and help my team since i cant be alwasts the entry
always great to be able to play any role, if you can learn to not depend on one singular frame of thinking, you can expand your talents and skills everywhere
god risk or rain music just works in the background of anything
actually unfair how good the soundtrack is
@@WaTzu yes my boy too right

Love hearing the physics!
Nice, ive never seen this aspects in youtube before.
always been drawn to the lurker play style, i would love to see that in a video like this.
love the work
World doesn't really need more "pure" lurkers but ropz is the one to watch from pro scene and honorable mentions go for blamef, hunter and spinx.
Lurker abc: Pick which side you play all your defaults -> Watch that enemies don't push behind your teammates and if you hear multiple enemies rotating away inform teammates and begin to push yourself. If you don't hear anything rotate to help your teammates.
If teammates decide to execute the site you're lurking on don't yell at them or rotate all the way to other site but become the entryfragger instead.
you're knowledgeable, imma sub
Great video
Always a goated video
I believe that “support” is more of a T-sided role and there are two main jobs that they are supposed to do 1.) setting their teammates up for success such as nades, boosts, and double swings and 2.) being the primary trade fragger for the site entry
A lot of users on HLTV love to point out that support isn't a real position and that people like to call the 4th/5th worst player on the team because they are doing badly. But it's really easy to see which pro players are the support for their team, its noted by virtually no opening duels, low DPR, above average KAST, and high trading. Now, this doesn't mean that the support can't be aggressive. Some aggressive support players play more like a flex to fill any role. It is all situational at the end of the day and if that's what their teammates need to succeed then they are still support players.
Like you said in the video, the support is a systems-based player. They put the pressure in the round by keeping the entries alive and keeping the tempo up from trading. And they keep the pressure throughout the game by bringing weapons to the next round or even sacrificing with a weaker buy.
Examples of support
Traditional: TACO, Sjuush, Interz
Flex: JDC, Hunter, Maden
Agressive: Yuurih, Zontix, Twistzz
great video!
Bro tried to throw in the other twist in there and thought we wouldn’t notice
please keep making and working on your videos :)
great video
risk of rain music is a perfect choice for this vid
well done video
w video keep it up
i love being support with my nades and smokes
CSGO doesn't really have "hard set roles", every pro player plays as support if he has utility and teammates don't. Lurkers and Entries also often switch roles rather than positions depending on which site gets the execution call.
That being said some player always gets the short draw, whether its buying utility on pistol rounds, having to settle back during execution with mollies and flashes or their predetermined spot is anchoring the ever quiet B on Mirage/Train/Vertigo. These players are support more often than the others and it should be understood that's why they get worse ratings than their teammates, not because they are bad players.
Oh and as a sidenote: Being able to support is important. For everybody. Just don't try to force yourself into support role in every game, every round or every situation, that is counter productive.
Learn the basic lineups and comm for your teammates either what to do or what you are doing.
some risk of rain here
Fallen is probably the best support player I’ve seen. Recently there were some stats showing how many seconds per round his enemies were blinded by flashbangs and it was insane. And all of that while being the awper and IGL, dude’s in his 30’s and does everything so well…
Cadian is very similiar (I think he leads HLTV enemies flashed statistics while being IGL and Awper, not over 30 tho). Niko and Zywoo are hardly considered supports but their utility usage is always on point and there are plenty of solo faceit games from them on youtube.
@@timo6762 Agree! Cadian is a legend

wait twistzzz is support?
bro why is this video makes me think cs is too hard to play as a team?
whyy?
gaben, dis u?
Having Twistzz in the thumbnail is just NA bait. He is not a support player. Broky is by far the most effective support on Faze (number of flashes thrown, flash assists, flash time/success) followed by Karrigan. Nor is he a space taking supportive entry, with Rain + Karrigan being responsible for over 60% of entry duels. Nor is he an anchor on any map. He is normally 3rd in, which is why his stats have the least variance on Faze. If you're calling that a support, sorry but who isn't?
ya caught me
but for real, this is where i def shouldve put that he was support fot liquid
"To be fair, I don't consider myself a star player. I've been going through a lot of different role transitions right now. I kind of feel like I'm a main support and entry, and anchor [on CT]. That is ok for me. I was the only person on the team with past experiences of playing the B site, I wasn't the best at it, but I was also way worse overall back then"
www.hltv.org/news/26175/twistzz-to-be-fair-i-dont-consider-myself-a-star-player
@@WaTzu He's a flex rifler. He does a bit of everything and specializes in nothing. He was definitely more supportive on Liquid since he was literally the least aggressive player on that lineup by opening statistics, but nitr0 and Stewie2k were the primary supportive elements on Liquid over Twistzz (though he wasn't far behind in terms of throwing supportive util).
You just can't put him in the same vein as support players like Perfecto, Xyp9x, interz, nitr0, AMANEK, TACO, etc. He's closer to a Magisk or a jks in terms of roles (albeit with less emphasis on anchoring).
You should get someone to speak for you or get better at pronunciation :P
You should never step foot into a comment section again :D))
