First ever reading and use of a newly found, op-shop purchased barometer. After adjusting for hPa (coverting to inches) for my area and moving the fixed hand, I noticed the weather outside actually change. Cooler, darker etc. I looked at the dial and fixed hand showed the below hand, changed. A tiny change of course. Great to see. Thanks for helping explain what's happening. Easy to understand.

Hi! I bought a vintage barometer and was worried it may have mercury. It looks like the wheel to the right of you in this video. Is there any way to find out whether it has mercury in it? Thanks so much!
I dont think mercury is better than spirit (alcohol) for a thermometer. You can find used instruments containing mercury on eBay. You might have to pick up in person as you cant ship them.
Somebody told me the barometric pressure is a measurement of air pressure between high and low air pressure. If that statement is correct, does high pressure means that the air pushes down on us harder? And low pressure means the air pushes down on us less? I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer my questions since I have always wondered what is a high and low barometric pressure, but I have no clue!
I was trying to figure out using mine for rain. I keep letting rain on low reading and higher readings. So it doesn't help me at all. I'm in California. So it rains in 30.04 and 29.80 So I'm confused.

Mercury barometers are approx 30" tall to accommodate the mercury tube. Also, look for a tall skinny door on the back to gain access to the tube.
Can you still buy barometer and even a thermometer with Mercury and his Mercury better in the reading of a thermometer

how do you know if barometer is antique banjo type
Banjo type barometers are round at the bottom 1/3 and with a neck extending upwards

Better to watch the trend (up or down) than the actual pressure when tracking rain
