- Many of you will have noticed Dan riding this Ridley Fenix disc over the last few months, a bike he fell for after riding it up and down the Col du Tourmalet. Here he explains why it has become his bike of choice for a lot of occasions.

Disc brakes have been a very controversial subject amongst our GCN viewers. Dan, like many of you, was a skeptic before he used them, but has since become a convert. After riding it in the mountains of France, and the gravel roads of Wales, he has had plenty of time to get the feel for both them, and this whole Ridley Fenix bike.
Thankfully, he even remembered his scales this time....
Let us know what you think of this bike in the comments section below. Oh, and your opinion on disc brakes (eeeek!).

Brilliant to see such an honest approach to things such as stack on the headset and the chainrings. Good on you Dan. Welcome back in the Cayman Islands any time!!
Best of the presenter bikes bunch. It just looks right for riding.
Really enjoyed this presentation. Loved that you took the time to explain everything and walk us through at a relaxed pace. Happy cycling!
stunning bike. will be checking ridley models out when I'm in the market again
While I found the bike interesting, what I really liked was Dan's introspection and how he was changing the bike from a tool to make a living to a toy to enjoy. Very well done for those of us who have to come to realize we are not a "has been" but rather a "never was". Chapeau!
Dan, without a doubt, that is the coolest bike of the GCN gang. Of all the presenter's bikes I've seen so far, this Ridley is the one I would like to have, exactly because of what it offers: comfort AND speed. Chapeau!
Great bike Dan and I admire your modesty re changing your gear ratios with age I am almost on Granny Gear that is
Nice fuzzy effect at the end, I like that. Change is good. I like the bike too.
What happened to Matt's Venge, Simon's Tarmac and Tom's RIdley which Simon rode for a WHILE for some reason?
Sponsors...
+lite Roadie n+1
Lll Louis It'd be great to see the GCN boys on titanium and steel bikes with hand built wheels, polished aluminium hubs and campy athena, and all that good stuff, rather than these carbon bikes which look ugly.
+lite Roadie MONEY TALKS
+James. S Someone's got to pay for the GCN videos you watch ;-). Also, my Tarmac was a sponsors bike left over from when I raced too, so it's pretty much the same thing right?
Nice bike Dan! Are you guys going to do a review on the fenix sl?? I'm thinking of buying it
darn, i think i would trade my bike with yours if i could. you achieved beautiful simetry and high performa ce somponents. amasing setup 👍
You mean GCN doesn't pay you to go fast? No wonder Matt and Si been kicking your ass.
+nightfly222 No, the motto is: Ride 2 miles an hour, so everybody sees you!
Noticed that your GCN Kit is being sold at the santini store at the TDU! the comfort of the gonads will be great with some new knicks
This video made me rather sad. Is Dan beginning to lose his Boss-ness?
New Video: Keep Riding through Middle Age, Like a Boss
+James Heath I think Dan is 10 years younger than Matt. That should put him more to shame. Hahaha
I've been riding hydraulic disc brakes on MTBs for quite a while which made it a must-have for the road bike. Luckily, they are available nowadays :)
I just got a disc brake bike, can't wait for summer to come around. Not riding my shiny new bike in salt and snow!
+SnowCYYCling I just got more winter suitable tires for my bike, then chickened out after looking at all the salt on the road.
I have a 90's beater bike for winter :)
SnowCYYCling I have a nice new Trek Domane I bought this last summer, That's what the tires were for. But I also have a 70's vintage CCM cruiser that I use for errands around town year round. I should see if I can pick up a beater road bike as well. That's a good idea.
comfort aside its still a very nice bike, thanks for sharing that
Next on gcn dan lyoyd hairstyle tutorial
Dan, very nice bike and setup indeed. Cheers.
I think I'm sold. Very nice bike. I'd love to know how stiff it is?
Cool, an ex-pro realizing cycling is about fun first and foremost, and why be uncomfortable while doing so ? I can't think of a good reason. My major pet peeve with cyclists are the ones that just can't see past racing despite the fact the bicycle was invented as a bit of quirky device designed for fun and racing came second. Ride what you like I say, good on you Dan. Next you need to try a 650b + MTB.....super fun !
Dan - I'd like to hear your view on the Garmin pedals. I'm thinking of moving to them, off of my old SRM crankset.
andre griepel used the ridley fenic standard model in the 2014 TDF!
Very nice ride Dan! Bigger tires are without doubt the future for most amateurs.. as in the impressive gravel performance. 8.165kg seems rather heavy for a circa £5k bike though? With fairly shallow wheels... :-( #letsseewherethiswholediscthinggoes ?!
Buy the Ridley noah! Its awseme and leither. I got the Noah with ffwd f6r, f9r and f4r weelh sets (just like the bikes of team facanceoleil) it's leight and looks good;) wen you need a new bike, buy the Ridley Noah RS or FAST!!!
Favorite presenter boss bike.
sweet ride!!
Comfort? next you'll be getting a padded gel seat with springs underneath ;)
found the same bike but with 105 Shimano groupset, bar stem seat post alloy and fulcrum wheels in cheaper price..
Dan, go for the Arione K1 it's the padded version of the Arione and it's much better. Top pros like Geraint Thomas and Bradley Wiggins use it.
"On that box in the middle" the gcn editors must have made a mistake, since the Boss can't.
maybe a next GCN Presentor race?
I was thinking a cyclocross race at the worldchampions parcours in Heusden-Zolder?
Tell me if you like or don't like it!
Would be interesting to know how much heavier this bike is compared to a similarly equipped (Red/Zipp) Fenix with rim brakes.
Sweet Bike.
WOAH... NEW END SCREEN!!!!!!!
Love the bike! I would take it off your hands Dan. Oh wait, what's the frame size? I may need it one size smaller than you.
Why was Dan using a canyon aerial Cfslx 7.0 in some videos recently
Maybe you can try Giant defy next year
Hi GCN, Could you please do a video on how much food to take on a ride and what food? I don't like to spend heaps of money and would like to know how much food is enough. Would help heaps. Please
just a thought Daniel..If you removed the bidon mini pump and garmin how many grams lighter would the bike weigh
I'd say about 200-250 grams 70-80g bottle 70-80g for the Garmin and 50-70g for that mini little pump.
That is surprisingly heavy, considering it has the superlight 303 wheels...
Same bike as me Dan but a 2018 and rim brake, just cnt get onboard with discs 🤣
I like this bike but really hate those large decal or stamped
What do you think of the lower end Fenix A60, going to get it.
So I would imagine 7.6 Kg net weight (w/o Garmin head unit & pedals, w-bottle & bottle cage). Perhaps 7.5 Kg with 25mm tires and trimmed steerer tube. Nice ;)
sounds pretty close those Garmin vector pedals weigh 425g bottle cage is probably 20-30g bottle is 80-90g and mini pump is 60-70g Garmin head unit is 114g out front mount 20-40grams. so a show room floor weight of 7.4kg not bad for a big sized disk brake bike.
#torqueback if I want to change my cassette from a 9 speed to a 10 or 11 speed, what other new components will I need to buy?
I almost forgot Cervelo was also his sponsor. but I'm still believing.. no, I want to believe that his private bike is Cervelo.
Dan you should get back on the Cervelo.
Nice!
Hi Dan, I was more interested in how much this cost than how much it weighs? Minus the Zipp's....
Good review; thank you. Suggestion for next video: How about you lads strut your stuff in a real road race -- like a boss. I know you're getting on a bit, but you would still like to -- wouldn't you?
Hold on! The label on those tires are NOT lined up with the valve stem! ex-pro so you let things slide?
The question i'v actually been waiting for is: how much does it cost!? :)
+rebal doghouz If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it! ;)
+taurus20077 I definitely can't, just a window shopper :)
+rebal doghouz Velobuild has a road frame with thru axles, so you can keep the dream alive. I don't know which wheels they offer would work with discs though.
+QuickQuips thank man :D
They are super affordable xD
How much did it set you back Dan
It always was Lloydy!
what is the cassette gear spread? i assume 11-28?
How much did that set you back Dan
What pressure are you running?
40 cm handlebars interesting....you like them narrow? I have 42 thinking of going to 40....thoughts?
+Mark Gilmore I really like them narrower I must admit. Dan
Narrow bars are awesome, I switched to 36cm a few years ago on the track and found the extra stability at speed so nice I only ride 36. (old school fit was 42cm, as I'm not small)
I have been fit for 38cm c-c bars and love them, well in line with my shoulders, could even go down to 36. It's all about having a proper fit for /your/ body. I'm 5'9" (175.26cm) tall but have relatively narrow shoulders.
Next vid - how to ride a Stannah Stairlift Like a Pro, followed by GCN Does Science - Which Tena Pads Fit my Bibshorts best?
what size axles?
Can you guys do a review on Specialized Diverge sets
finally some common sense! Stop chasing UCI weight limits people and just enjoy cycling in comfort!
Good work Dan
Those Belgians know how to make bikes! 👹👺😍
Was there water in the bottle when you weighed it?
looks empty to me
+mrcain And the comp...
Shouldn't someone on the Cervelo test team be riding a Cervelo?
why i ended up watching this?
what sort of weird shape is he that he needs a seat that high with a stem so low?
Are those Adidas trainers stolen from your big brother??? They look 3 sizes to big!😁
Did you feel cramps at the end of this video???
I would have pronounced it fen-icks not phoenix, is Dan secretly hoping this bike will help his career rise from the ashes!
Why weigh it with both a bottle in the cage and the computer still attached?
more real world weight? kinda like weighing without pedals. what's the point if that's not the riding weight
+Damien But UCI weigh the bikes without bottles and computer right? And it seems like the "standard" for weighing bikes is without disposable items (bottles, computer, saddle bag etc.), if looking anywhere else on the internet and also in many other GCN videos.
Would've had a sub 8kg bike if you'd taken the mini pump off before you weighed it....
that mini pump is one of those light ones probably only 70grams
Dark label Zipp wheels please. There's too much ZIPP on this bike.
8.16 kg bike and water
empty bottle
how do you know its empty?
Rim brakes are so 20th century
All the GCN presenters own bikes from GCN sponsors. How odd!
Shhwwweeeeeettttt!
labels of the tires are not in line with the valve. Ergo; ugly bike.
oh fuck of eliteist, fuck wits like you are what put people of the hobbby.
+CyclingSalmon14 Nah, it's overly sensitive fucks like you who are off putting
Haha Im trolling, Duh, Im also not sensitive in the slightest.
Gotta follow the velouminati rules and ofcourse abide bt the bike fourms sub fourm 41 standerds!!
Cranks at the right position please.
+CyclingSalmon14 along with all the fat fucks that have top end bikes and ride three abreast to annoy everyone. Ten years ago these people never existed!
+CyclingSalmon14 along with all the fat fucks that have top end bikes and ride three abreast to annoy everyone. Ten years ago these people never existed!
I wonder.. When does gcn run out of ideas for how to videos
#slamthatstem
Disc brakes look ugly on a road bike, that's my problem. That bike is around a kilo heavier thanks Si's as well.
Go back to Qrings dan!
IGN 1/10 TOO MUCH STEERER TUBE
Weighing the bike with the bidon? Seriously guys start saying "this is a sponsored video" when you show off your sponsors product this is not product placement anymore as it used to be. I am basically going to avoid buying any of your sponsors products because I would feel like I have being talked to doing so
huh how does having a 100gram or so bottle that says gcn on it make you so mad?
+Damien I was not taking about the bottle, but the bike, wheels, group set, saddle, power meter/pedals, all coming from GCN sponsors
+smachsimo whatever bike you buy, you will have been talked into buying it in some form or another. There's a reason you're buying that bike, actually there's a reason you even looked at that bike and considered buying it. It's not like you buy totally unknown bikes with totally unknown parts. Your bike will still have Shimano, Campa or Sram... And since this channel and all of it's content is free, why are you even complaining ?! Maybe even more so, since GCN is such a cool channel, maybe actually buy the stuff that promotes them because the sponsors brought you all the GCN-shows that you enjoyed and learned from. And also: it's not like they're advertising for crap products or rip-offs, is it...
+pl4free I don't have any problems with advertising when it says its name. I love GCN and I appreciate honesty, reminding people that a product they are recommending is is from a sponsor is more sensible.
@@smachsimo I am with you on this Damien. Was the bottle full or empty.
Sorry Dan, but I think your bike might be the least impressive of the three. Will we get to see Lasty's?
ok ok what's it worth
First comment
Dan before you weigh the bike please-remove the water bottle.
Tire labels are not centered above the valve.
2/10 - would not ride.
What is the frame size?
Hi, I think it is size M.
