New Boat Canvas Project Before & After Results - Planning Design, Cost & Timing of Canvas Upgrade

- Our boat canvas was 12 YEARS OLD and definitely needed to be replaced! As much as we tried to prolong the life of our canvas it was time for an upgrade on our 2002 Sea Ray 410 Sundancer. This is our 3rd boat that we replaced canvas on (2nd canvas upgrade for this boat), so we thought we'd walk you through our planning process for new canvas - what we're changing in the layout/design with canvas pieces (where to put isinglass vs panels, U zippers, etc), the cost involved (it was not cheap!) and the why we waited until the end of boating season to do the project. Next up will be new deck flooring in the spring... so be sure to follow along!

Looks foxy. I don't have a boat but it's probably time I get a new canvas. The sunshine shines brightly through my canvas hole today.
oh it is.. and you should get new canvas just in case you get a boat.. or at least to block some of that sun LOL.
@@MyBoatLife I really should get a boat if for no other reason than it would give me a place to wear my "I DO IT ON THE WATER" t-shirt without having people look at me like I'm a weirdo.
@@JohnRuhl look for that in my merch shop - it would look great on you. And hey, fake it til ya make it!! 😂
Woven vinyl flooring is awesome. We have it on our Regal 3760.
Agree! (and nice boat btw!) It seems to be a good option for a cruiser style boat… but did we pick it? you’ll have to see in the spring!! (trying to have tease lol) and thanks for watching til the end 😁
Your cover looks outstanding! I have a 2001 Sea Ray 340 Sundancer and new canvas is on the list in the next year. The black cover really looks great!
Thank you!!! It took a little convincing with Captain to change to black but super happy we did - the black makes our 21 yr old boat look so much newer. I also like how it picks up on Sea Ray emblem. Gonna redo our faded name with black in it too. Good luck with your project - hopefully you grabbed a spot in your canvas shop’s schedule!!
Great channel.
Always feel bad throwing out the old canvas. All the hours of cleaning, fixing zippers/snaps & waterproofing….
Nah, feels better jamming in the bin….lol
That is SO TRUE!! it felt weird just dumping it but definitely not worth selling on eBay lol! And our daughter battling it into the dumpster was some good comedy relief.. it didn’t go without a fight!! 😂 thanks for watching!
My canvas is about 8-10 years old. The canvas is not bad and we clean and waterproof it regularly. The one mistake I made when I ordered it was to allow the canvas maker to talk me into using a carbonate window material. It is actually a layered product which is then susceptible to accumulating dirt and moisture between the layers and the carbonate is much more brittle than isinglass and therefore, highly susceptible to cracking. I am having the last piece of carbonate replaced with isinglass as I type this. It cracked open during decommissioning.
Yikes never heard of carbonate - switching it out sounds like a good plan. Funny thing is our isinglass was actually in good shape so you can make it last if you take care of it!
Nice job on the canvas. Its a shame they dont make nuteak anymore. i loved it on my boat
Thanks! Yeah I think we used that on our last boat. Now we just scotch guard top in spring. And no tears will be nice next season too! 😁
The canvas on my 2000 340 Sundancer is 23 years old now! It is starting to show signs of wear so I will be replacing it in the spring. I wanted to have it done over the winter but could not find inside storage. Looking forward to having new canvas made. Yours looks great!
WOW.. 24 years!? you must have taken really good care of it!! Get a very early start in the spring if you can - our local shop says they’re slammed in spring. Thanks for compliment- we can’t wait to start next season with new canvas!
I am already in line to have canvas done. The shops here in Ohio are also backed up. Basically when I launch I will take it to them and dock it by their shop to have it done.

@@jetlag4754 that’s great - good you’re planning ahead!!
There will be a video of it on my CZcams Channel when it happens.@@MyBoatLife
Nice job!
We did our 450da in black last year and are very happy. I got the canvas company to add a front winscreen cover that zips in at the top above the Eisenglass and covers both this and the actual glass. It's great for shade into the helm and also great when it rains...because you know, those front window rubbers are damn hard to find for replacement.
Thanks! So we were thinking about adding something over the windshield for extra shade.. are you saying it’s solid or more of a screen? And if screen is it enough to stop rain drips? Definitely something we’ve been considering adding - helm gets HOT.
Its the same canvas I used for the enclosure, so it's solid, however, it has a lining which is a softer screen to protect the Eisenglass as the canvas is too abrasive. Yes, it's waterproof and at the bottom it has large suction cups that affix it to the windshield glass. @@MyBoatLife
@@aceventura8966 oh wow that sounds cool!
When I had U zippers installed the canvas shop strongly advised against them on front windshield pieces. He said they will leak and you'll regret it. Glad I followed his advise. Express cruiser style boats have too much of an angle on the front isinglass pieces. The side pieces they did never leaked.
That’s exactly the problem we had! Too much angle & leaking was awful. We do like rolling up front for air so hoping this new way of the full panel rolling up works good. U zippers on sides never leak btw and we couldn’t live without them. Makes it much cooler cruising & on hook with cross breeze. You live & learn!!
@@MyBoatLife yes U zippers on the side curtains is a game changer. The ability to roll the center windshield isenglass piece is a huge plus. All the that can be done in a matter of minutes. Especially nice on a hot day when arriving at the boat on Friday late after noon. Same goes for when it rains just zip everything back up in a matter of a minute or less
Saw that 1984 2755 in your video!
Our first boat!!! Actually it was 1985 2550 - found out after we bought it that it previously sunk!! 😂
@@MyBoatLife that's a riot! I am sure not that time you found out that though
the "you know your boat sunk" story was funny (looking back!) but it definitely explained a lot... like why the electrical was so bad & cabinets were so crooked! but all good, we learned a lot with that boat.
Oatleys?
Yes sir! They did a great job & managed to squeeze us in just before we got pulled. They’re also re-doing a few seats over the winter.
