    This is from a Steam review by user gamer_7601:
    "Let's get the things that the PlayStation does graphically better out of the way first:
    - Proper transparency effects (Saturn uses mesh transparency)
    - More detailed character shadows outside of battles (Saturn just uses a black circle).
    - Some spells have more complex effects.
    That should be pretty much it.
    Now the things that are worse on PlayStation:
    - Skyboxes have no textures.
    - There are a lot of distorted textures.
    - Water effects are simpler.
    - Character sprites are missing their right side.
    - Many ground textures have been simplified. Static shadows are often part of the ground texture, so they are mostly gone too.
    - Backgrounds used in battles have a much lower resolution."

      I genuinely don't mind the Saturn having circle shadows outside of battles. I always thought it felt like the sun was moving violently in the PSX port because of how their shadows stayed in place, well in a battle scene, it makes a lot more sense that the shadows are visible where they are since the camera is fixated.
      And for every mesh effect nowadays, a nice composite bleed signal on real hardware or using Kronos on emulation nullifies these problems pretty fast.

    At 2:38 the smoke transparency effect actually looks much better on the Saturn. It blends nicely with the level colors. On the playstation it looks like the alpha brightness is way too high, almost like it's in a lighting effect mode.

      Sprites and 2D artwork hold up nicely even years later, so this game will always look good other than the 3D polygons used for buildings. However the Lunar games will always look better visually as the entire game is sprites and 2D artwork.

    I prefer the Saturn version. The colors look blurry on PSX at times, whereas they actually seem to "pop" more on the Saturn. I also noticed a bit more animation with Sue when she was running through the town in the Saturn version. It just looked better, overall. The water animation on Saturn also contains some more detail. So glad the Saturn version was fully translated and can now be played via emulation (it uses the same official PSX English translation, but subtitles have been added to the animated cutscenes since the voices are obviously in Japanese). It truly is awesome! The PSX version will always hold a special place in my heart, but the Saturn version definitely wins here.

    One of the advantage of the Saturn here is the use of the VDP2 for the floor. As a result it doesn't wiggle like the PS1 version which suffers of texture warping. Really noticeable during those 360 degrees camera rotations. A lot of the "line" on PS1 are not straight and wiggle.
    Both consoles suffer of those distortions on 3D objects like the houses or the crates though.
    Regarding shadows, the PSone has more dynamic shadows for characters where Saturn only have that black circle. On the other hand, the Saturn has shadows for the buildings, walls reflected on the ground.

    Saturn all the way. Duh! This videogame was created for Sega’s console and is clearly a labor of love. The PSX version is good, but lacks little details like shadows by the buildings snd the sensational VDP2 water effects. Background visuals in battle scenes are also slightly different. I also think the colors just pop a little more on Saturn. Again, not a huge difference, but it’s there.

  • @segasdreamer
    @segasdreamer Před 8 lety +5

    I think the biggest draw towards the Saturn for me is that fact that it has the true 2D sprite aspect ratio and the PSX version is stretched out. The Playstation 3D models look a little nicer because of the better 3D architecture, but given it's about sprite detail for characters, Saturn wins hands down.

    • @TS-yz3ud
      @TS-yz3ud Před 9 měsíci

      We would expect the 3D models to look better on the console with better 3D architechture, which (even if the Saturn was relatively more powerful) clearly describes the PS1. But, it doesn't seem to always be the case here, as the models seem to at least benefit from having straightened textures, no seams in between, and a higher resolution overall on the Saturn.

    The PS1 might have technically more impressive real-time shadows, but I actually prefer the Saturn's big bold circular shadows.
    If you ask me, the circular shadows just flow better with the sprites from a design perspective, being clear and readable as shadows.

Playstation's is simply a tiny repeating texture with no variation, covering the entire ground layer of the town. Saturn on the other hand, uses a far-higher-quality ground texture that is hand-crafted to fit around buildings, paths, and other objects. There's also a large grass portion that is completely absent on the Playstation version. It's all just a testament to how much more the Saturn could handle when it came to textures.

    saturn all the way, lighter colours''as usual when something is compared to playstation consoles'' and less blurred textures. better use of 2d and just sharper overal, only thing playstation alsways have over sega saturn is transparancies.

    • @highonaids6510
      @highonaids6510 Před 7 lety +5

      Eh, I'm quite sure the transparency effects were just altered and "intensified" (i.e more transparent) in the PSX version. I'm not 100% sure, but from what I remember the Saturn has an easier time dealing with transparency effects.
      In the Saturn version you can see that the text box is transparent, but it is intensified in the PSX.
      PSX version also has different ground textures for some odd reason, both versions have the same style, but the layout is quite different. I think the Saturn version also has some textures that are just flat out better resolution-wise.
      The battles in the Saturn version aren't like the PSX version. The PSX version displays a 2D background, while the Saturn is either mostly or somewhat 3D. Battles just look a lot better on the Saturn, PSX version looks super bad, it's honestly my only gripe w/ the PSX version.
      From what I've seen of the Saturn version, it appears to be crisper and a tiny bit more vibrant.
      PSX version just flat out has some background elements missing (Clouds during the opening, see: 4:20 ... Lol, what a timestamp).
      The Saturn version's victory screen text box' looks a lot better imo.
      PSX version casts shadows more realistically in and out of battles on sprites, whereas the Saturn version only does so in battle.
      Saturn version casts shadows off of buildings, PSX version does not.
      I think the Saturn version has an overall more stable frame rate.

    To all those people who say the textures in saturn version have higher resolution.. I ripped textures from both versions and they are exactly the same. • @Hausbrauen
      @Hausbrauen Před rokem +2

      No, many textures on Saturn were indeed superior... this 100% depends on which textures you're looking at. Many textures were identical, while many others were more detailed and larger on Saturn. For example, the texture for the battle map was much lower res on the Playstation, which was very noticable. This is very well documented on various retro gaming sites.
