  • As Boks Office makes its return for the first time since South Africa's triumphant victory in France, host Hanyani Shimange is joined Rugby World Cup 2023 Champion Deon Fourie and Springbok legends Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers. The team discuss the Bok's route to winning their fourth Webb Ellis Cup and ask if they were lucky to win each knockout game by just one point.

What a great discussion. Even as a New Zealander these greats talking about their experiences in the big games and how they saw the flow, and influences, excellent stuff. I do disagree with the conclusion at the end though which concluded that the Boks weren't lucky to win. If you analyze the vast majority of the Big World Cup games, there's usually an element of luck, or bad luck involved, but that's the nature of the game. In the last final, there were so many elements that could have gone either way, and the bounce of the ball, luck, if you will, went the Boks way this time. Luck usually has a part to play in victories, however, in this case whatever went the Boks way, good on you guys, worthy winners. Can't wait to see you back in NZ.😁

The ball that should've bounced for Savea but bounced for Willemse, I consider that lucky.
The ABs missing 2 winning kicks with world's best kickers on the field, so lucky.
But we've still worked for it and we deserve it a 100%.

A team needs to have skill and mindset in order to take advantage of luck when it presents itself.
As much as the Boks were lucky, they also had their fair share of being unlucky. I mention the following:
      1. Being in the pool of death.
      2. Having to play all of the other top 6 teams.
      3. Having to play the hosts (also in 2019) in a knock-out game and in the very stadium where France had not lost a game for ages.
      4. Only being able to bring Pollard in during the pool stages.
      5. Marx being injured.
      6. Lukhanyo Am being injured.
      7. Bongi being injured early in the final.

@ 2:22 and following - About '07 - absolutely true. It was amazing to be a Bok supporter in Paris in that week and we felt it everywhere from the attitude of waiters in restaurants, the way we were received and treated in shops and hotels and just the random general public warmth towards the Bok identity. It was phenomenal in the way the French loved us just because they didn't want England to win. Never forget the cries of "Down wiz Rosbeef" 🤣🤣. Honestly (and understandably), Parisians are generally not very patient or engaging with tourists unless one speaks French but that week was different 👊

As an Avowed "SPRINGBOK" supporter, I have to admit that as a mere bystander watching the final on Television here in Spain, my heart was in my mouth in the final minutes. The result could so easily have gone either way. Fortunately, for South Africa and legions of fans across the globe,
Jordi Barret MISSED, scoring those crucial penalty points in the closing minutes of this epic match. That to me was Luck for "The Springboks", and no amount of bleating by "ALL Black", fans about the referee and the "TMO's", can alter the fact of the "missed" kick, which cemented the Heroic
"SPRINGBOKS", FOURTH WIN of THERUGBY WORLD CUP...! " GO BOKKE..." !!

Each of their wins in the knockout stage, taken alone, could easily be characterized as lucky.
In each match, a lot of stuff went their way.
Yet, when you look at it in entirety, they made it thru the group of death which had two of the top five teams in the world aside from themselves, and beat three of the top six teams in the world aside from themselves in the knockout stages. So, they played all five of the other top six teams in the world and won four of those matches and even in the fifth against top ranked Ireland, they didn't use their best kicker and lost on kicks.
The point is, that's not luck. And, if it is, you make your own luck with that type of performance.
In fact, instead of lucky, you would have to say that this was one of the best performances of any team in any sport in any world cup. Match after match, they played the best and figured out a way to beat them all. That's extremely impressive and it's impossible to justify saying that you were lucky when consistently beating your top five rivals.

Good points. Luck goes both ways usually. You win some you lose some. SA might have had some good luck at times but also had bad luck at times. You could also have mentioned the bad luck of losing the services of Marx, Am and de Jager. Also losing Bongi early in the final. Also some ref decisions may have gone SA's way but some did not such as the allowed forward pass try by NZ and the disallowed try by SA because of advantage not being played, etc. So SA were not particularly lucky though they had some luck at times.

Luck was not involved. It was not luck that Rassie and Jacques were smarter than other coaches.
How many teams would take Deon Fourie to the World Cup. Most coaches would say, "Oh Fourie is 37 and he's too short"
But Rassie doesn't care about numbers. Rassie knew that Deon is an outstanding athlete who plays with heart and soul. Whenever Deon entered games, he turned things around. The same was true about Kwagga Smith
After Malcolm Marx went down, Rassie and Jacques could have pushed the panic button. But they didn't. They trusted Deon and Marco to be able to play as back up hookers. Then they brought Pollard back. None of this was luck.

Then two weeks later the ABs stopped the Boks from touching the ball down. And in August at Twickenham, the ABs also stopped the Boks from touching the ball down. Face facts fellas , in the final ,the ref made a bad call against Savea and the Boks scored a penalty ( the ref made a mistake and said sorry ) , but regarding not awarding the try to the All Blacks because of a knock on 4 phases earlier was not a case of the officials not knowing the rules , it was a case of them deliberately ignoring the rule to favour the Boks ,pure and simple. It is a sign of the corruption that exists with the rugby ruling body. It was a shame as it could have been an epic final , instead a team that played everything except rugby won , and rugby fans wonder why the sport is in decline and losing fans to other more exciting sports. There's your answer.

And the All Blacks got compensation for their rightfully disallowed try by getting awarded another knock on try so that evens it out.
As for your missed kicks... That was also Barnes's fault isn't it? Boks kicked all their goals without any trouble.
And one final thing that narrative about Barnes saying sorry was spun by NZ media. He said sarcastically "sorry, I did not see it that way."
Also the game was even for more than 20 min of 14 vs 14 and the All Blacks accomplished nothing as well.

Go listen again, watch the full match and stop daydreaming about an apology that was never given and social media regurgarating the same nonsense. He said sorry I dont agree, did not see you come off enough and Ardie wasted time so the ref blew him off by saying your okay and then adamently signalled that he stands firm on his decision. So, please stop spreading lies. "Sorry" as in 'excuse me' by British jargon and added that he did not watch the replay. It was clear he was getting annoyed by Ardie. The only thing for us to worry about is that now it seems that the English Premiership is the one dying a death (sad for Sarries but they'll be OK) the club teams are finally going to get their chance, and with the numbers they have playing it'll be quite a challenge for all the other countries, but that'll mean union will grow even more.
