    Gypsy getting sent to prison instead of some sort of mental health and rehabilitation facility is a failure of the justice system, in my opinion. She was essentially held captive and abused physically, mentally, and emotionally for years by her mother. She was controlled and raised up in that environment to believe she could have no way out. This was a highly unusual case and it needed to be handled as such.

      According to other comments here, Gypsy preferred prison. She knew she would have the freedom to do what she wanted in a mental health facility, which would essentially be just like what she went through with her mother. In prison, she would have more freedom. It sounds like she might even have chosen prison intentionally.

      That doesn’t mean it is her choice whether or not another person lives. If she didn’t get sent to prison that would create such a backlash and destroy the system we have. She still committed a crime and the circumstances don’t justify what she did

      censor everything She seemed fine. She knew better. She even said “she taught me to lie, and I want to be an honest person.” She is able to distinguish right from wrong even if she was mistreated. Plus the court involves psychiatric evaluations to determine the mental health of criminals and they never mentioned that she had any problems. She got the minimum sentence anyways

      Actually a lot of doctors noticed it of course, but some doctors are businessmen. If the mother or the patient said they are feeling ill then they will do what it takes to heal them either for the money or just 'cause. Here's a link to another documentary that shows more in depth detail, it even showed one doctor that immediately knew Dee Dee (gypsy's mother) was bluffing everything and knew that gypsy is perfectly healthy.

    • @lisanickerson4788
      @lisanickerson4788 Před 6 lety +138

      Semhal Tesfai there is a mental illness called Munchausen by proxy it is a very serious mental illness that causes a person to cause harm to a person they supposedly love to bring attention to themselves. They wish to look like the hero and seem like they are saving the person. It is quite often a mental illness that is found in mothers and I believe that this woman had it. Well no murder can be justifiable I believe that this is a case of I have to kill her before she kills me it should have been looked at that way. It was her life against her mother's life. It was abuse and it should have been taken that way that she even got jail time is a miscarriage of Justice. It should have been ruled that she would her life was in danger and she needed to be freed. By not bringing attention to the fact that the mother had Munchausen by proxy more than likely it belittles the Mental Health institution when this could have been used to bring attention to the sad state of mental health care in the United States.

    • @marxreader420
      @marxreader420 Před 5 lety +74

      "A real parent wouldn't do that" completely erases how multifaceted of an issue child abuse is. Real parents do abuse their children when under stressful circumstances like mental illness and abuse they've suffered themselves. Dehumanizing abusers only serves to alienate them from the rest of society when in reality, abusers are just products of their circumstances that we should make an effort to understand and combat. Abuse is a very human thing, but that doesn't mean we can't take action to prevent it. And this is coming from a child abuse victim.

      Yes; she was healthy. It was believed that her mother had a type of disorder where the parent would induce an illness on the child, finding gratification by doing so.
      Gypsy's Mother would manipulate the doctors into believing the girl was both physically and mentally challenged. They performed unneeded surgeries on Gyspy due to the Mother's persistence to do so. Gyspy also had to take medications she never needed.
      When the Doctor's began to realize that the Mother was being untruthful, Dee Dee would pack up Gypsy and move her out of town to avoid controversy.
      Gypsy on multiple occasions seeked help or proved she wasn't ill as she appeared, but her Mother would just tell the police that Gypsy was mentally handicapped, and delusional, prompting the police and others around her to believe the girl was lying.
      I apologize for the long comment, but I hope it explains the situation a bit better.

Her boyfriend, however did have the ability to fully grasp situation and should have known better. I feel the 10 years given to Gypsy was fair because it was still murder but it was under very special circumstances. I’m just glad she didn’t get life without parole or the death penalty.

Those Drs who saw that nothing was wrong with Gypsy should have reported it. Drs are mandated reporters. All those Drs who didn't report can have jail time if someone presses charges. The father was also seeing Gypsy for a short time (till age 3) and knew his daughter was not ill. He could have reported it or filed for a custody hearing which would have uncovered everything sooner.

      the thing is is is no large medical data base that can give you the medical history of one person. Dr.s who did encounter them couldn't have had any hunch after just one visit. Many patients come on complaining about certain things that might not show up medically, and thus doctors could assume it could have been through internet research. Basically what im trying to say is that physicians are not mind readers nor do they have the luxury of time to accommodate everyone; tons of overlooked cases of missed opportunity to help. Then again I'm not saying that all GP are kind and do their job correctly. I can't speak for the Physicians who did do the surgery. I know healthcare in the USA is different so those procedures are hefty. Did they have some kind of monetary support for those surgeries? how come it was allowed?

      Brianna Wise psychiatric hospitals are very risky, sometimes the staff are wrong to the patients, and sometimes the screams of stress from the patients are too much for someone.
      I know this from experience, now I'm basically scared of doing anything without fear of being sent to another placement(mental hospital/residential facility)

    Man, the actor for Nick in The Act really got his every little quirk down pat, looking back on his police interview. And Joey King really captured Gypsy's spirit... Don't even get me started on Patricia Arquette... I barely recognized her. She didn't look a thing like herself until the flashback scenes in the 90s. Everyone was just brilliantly cast. The show has its fair share of issues, and the real-life people it was based on have some legitimate gripes with it (primarily the writing), but the casting was goddamn FLAWLESS.

A friend of mine and I were like, “Plot twist, Gypsy isn’t missing and she murdered her mom.” AND IT WAS TRUE. Munchausen by proxy is a real thing and I don’t blame Gypsy one bit for what she did. She couldn’t ever escape her mother no matter how hard she tried so she did the only thing that guaranteed her freedom from her.
