    Speaking from personal experience, the Velvet Fuzz into the Mick side of the D&M Drive is a wonder to hear. You guys have helped me tame my pedalboard in a big way, and encouraged me to pick up pedals I’d ordinarily steer well clear of (such as fuzz and chorus) to the point where they are now integral assets as part of my playing. I’m pretty sure that’s the very definition of inspiring. Keep it coming!

    • @mattgilbert7347

      Agree on Chorus. Have you heard the Maxon Ambient Stereo Chorus? Jeepers. What a beauty.

    • @KozmykJ
      @KozmykJ Před 6 lety +1

      I love a bit of subtle chorus, stereo always helps. Gives that Wide sound. For a nice rich chorus I prefer analogue to digital, though digi can be nice too. My #1 chorus is the Arion SCH-1 from way back (the SCH-Z is very similar)

    Hey guys! Great video! I recently got my first fuzz pedal after trying nearly every fuzz at my local music store. I ended up falling in love with the Velvet Fuzz. It just spoke to me in ways that others didn’t, and I literally couldn’t get a bad sound out of it. I’m really pleased to see you guys giving it the love it deserves!!

    I used a fuzz probe for years. The trick is to tune it to the key that you are playing in so when its just making crazy noise its in the the right key. You also want to start the base tone low so when you step on it it doesn't destroy everyone in the room.

    Today was the first day, in 12 years of owning a FuzzFactory, that i have ever played my FF and thought, "i should try to turn that knob that way to get more of that sound" and actually had it do something that sounded like i wanted it to. then coming home and watching mick messing with the knobs on the fuzz probe, having watched the entirety of his FuzzFactory experience ( but with two more knobs, cause, you know, the 5 knob was too simple...) was very satisfying.

  • @GitShiddy
    @GitShiddy Před 6 lety +2

    Not a dullard amongst the pedals today, every single one uniquely different in function and tone. ZVEX is a company that despite how much I like fuzz does stuff that is so a) awesome and b) beyond my capabilities to make musical, but everyone who can and does deserve respect for making it look easy.
    I'm hoping for an octave fuzz show soon that looks at the various types of octave fuzz. As great as the Octavia is, it is most certainly not the only game in town and would be nice to see the progression of that type of effect.

    You guys have inspired me so I recently bought my first fuzz pedal after having played the guitar for nearly 20 years! I just never really liked that sound and always opted for a more distorted/overdriven gain sound as I love all kinds of music but especially heavier stuff. But recently I’ve been listening to more Doom and sludgy/stoner heavy stuff and the fuzz is all over those styles! So I went down to my local store and grabbed a Jupiter by Walrus audio and I have to say I LOVE IT!!! Can’t believe I never did it sooner thanks guys!

      @e3super2 Před 6 lety

      Matthew Shanley It's not from Catalinbread, but check out the TPS videos with the Hudson Broadcast that Mick mentioned in this video. It does the spitting, broken sound in a really cool way.

    • @gfgf9300
      @gfgf9300 Před 6 lety

      I think Devi Ever and Death By Audio are the best choices if you're looking for a really "broken sound". They make pretty weird and experimental pedals, like delays and reverbs with fuzz option, etc. But those pedals can even be useful in more conventional music (Nels Cline of Wilco uses a lot of Devi Ever and Z-Vex pedals). Catalinbread stuff is also great, they don't do the Teaser Stallion anymore, but they still make a lot of cool fuzzes like the Perseus (low octave "velcro" fuzz) and the Antichthon (an insane fuzz with trem-like oscillations). Also the Karma Suture is an amazing fuzz inspired by the Harmonic Percolator (used by Steve Albini). Catalinbread stuff is not "fucked up" like DE and DBA, they're very versatile, but you can make them sound crazy if you need.

  • @MrACangusyoungDC
    @MrACangusyoungDC Před rokem +1

    I bought the Veteran and the strength is mostly in the smooth dail which makes it uncompromisingly close to a fuzz face if it's all the way on. Dail it off to make it the versatile pedal that it is. I'm also really happy it had the boost because I never leave the fuzz on alone. Any other fuzz pedal would have bored me without the boost. Now fuzz is all I know. The boost is a range master clone as well so very classic rock with right amp and setting. The bias could just be a little bit better. The dying batteri spittery is done better on other pedals or for real in vintage ones.

    • @MrACangusyoungDC
      @MrACangusyoungDC Před rokem +1

      Favourite thing might to be minimise the fuzz side and just make the boost take over and be the mythical modded treble booster Tony Iommi used to get his sounds for at least the first three Sabbath albums.

      Like I’ve said in previous comments, I’ve been watching you guys since the “how to use delay” (don’t remember exact title) episode and it’s only gotten better.

    Fuzz fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I’m definitely in the older style fuzz face camp, but definitely had forays into some unusual pedals.
    Maybe try the:
    1). Shift Line Termo Fuzz
    2). Function(fx) Clusterfuzz
    Both sound unbelievably great, and are a weekends worth of fun each (at least)!!!!!!!!!
    Cheers!!!!!

    What happened? How come all of your pedals sound broken? 😁 I don't like fuzz generally, but I love watching you guys enjoy them and I still learn plenty from the episode - see you next Friday!

    Couple things:
    1. The bias knob on the thorpy= yes.
    2. Dan, play more atonal stuff.
    3. The QOTSA impersonation was hilarious but needed more mids. ;)
    4. I used to have a fuzz probe, it was a fun pedal but just so impractical for any frequent application.

    Quick recommendation guys, the Foxx Tone Machine and its derivatives. Tone City have the Fuxx Fuzz (yes, really) for cheap, and the Orange Fur Coat was based on the Foxx pedal (fur coat/foxx, see what they did?). I think it's the next "evolution" from tone bender/fuzz face/big muff pedals. Just something you might want to explore!

    Great timing for this video. Sweetwater delivered my Big Muff Nano Pi this very day, had to pause the video halfway through to play some unadulterated FILTH! Rawr! (edited for over excited typo)

    Scott Holiday (Rival Sons) is a big user of the Fuzz Probe, he makes it sounds great, not sure if I could. The Deep Trip fuzzes he uses sound great too!

    When it comes to fuzz the King Tone MiniFuzz Si, and my Trombetta Rotobone GE/SI are all I need. BUT, the Thorpy Veteran Si is just about the best tweedy overdrive pedal I've ever had. I don't use it as a fuzz.

    random note but i love briefly being able to see the neck profile near the nut of your guitar(s). Puts it all into context a litttle bit. We can talk all day about 'this ones like this' but sometimes I just want to see what that neck would feel like to schwang.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 6 lety

    • @lowqualityguitarvideos
      @lowqualityguitarvideos Před 6 lety

      ill take what I can get. the occasional gimpse in this vid while leaning over to adjust pedals was insightful. Any players' view angles are prob sick. note: players view for a player that stares at the neck while playing, not someone who is actually good

    • @lowqualityguitarvideos
      @lowqualityguitarvideos Před 6 lety

      guitars look so different from the cockpit view versus the 'as seen on musicians friend stock photo view where every fretboard is brazilian and every neck is modern c shape'

      for instance 27:35 I learned more about that tele than I have by watching all of your previous videos. Profile, fingerboard thickness. Nut slot cut. Looks like a joy to play, probably feels like a 50s? tele but sounds like a 70s (added snap due to maple to rosewood ratio) anyway
