    I love that no matter what I’m doing or what you’re doing, Sam is going to have his left hand floating around his temple.

      I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about.

      I have a habit of stroking my beard, we all have them. Sam put his finger to his temple, it makes him endearing. Just makes me happy.

    I like to use this as a short rest pad during travel; our monk or fighter can sit atop the disk and “recharge” without having to stop moving.

    Practical? Not really but...
    Here are some ideas: It is immovable until the one that cast it moves. So you can put in front of a door (make sure it opens in/towards you) now you have blocked off the door for an hour. I won't leave any trace that you short rested in that room because you haven't altered or damaged any surfaces around the door.
    If your DM uses random encounters and you aren't the level for fast travel form Transport Via Tree, Teleportation Circle, and the like? Short rest characters can recover while still on the move. I am not especially talking about low level character having horses or a wagon but the situations where your are on foot. This has been the standard in practically all the games when we need to get from this town to that town, we are mostly always on foot.
    If the ground is wet or boggy or just unpleasant to sit on you could short rest on the disk. Since it is a ritual then everyone would be staggered by 10 minutes 6 seconds. Obsolete by 5th level because Tiny Hut is a thing but up until then I can't think of any other spell that would let you rest above the ground like this one.
    Use it to fool people that are tracking you party. You can have multiple disks active at one time. So have one or two of you party riding the disks. They will leave no tracks for the pursuers to find. Travel next to a tree or some other structure that they can stay off the ground and hide in. Now when the pursuers pass by that one or two that climbed the structure or tree can slip down behind them. Surprise round and catch them in a pincer maneuver.
    This is also the fact that you can have multiple disks active. You can make a "bridge" of disks. Like there is a glacier with several crevasses but there is so layer of ice over the hole or a quagmire with quicksand pits, you can cast several over all that quicksand then just walk over using the disks.
    Okay I will admit this one is debatable but since my play group actually uses the high and long jump rules I will give it anyway. Let's say you have a 6' character with a strength of 10. That means that that one can high jump 3' and can reach up and grab something 12 feet off the ground. But using the disk you can now reach up to 15' feet.
    Get a Bag of Holding, problem solved. Well a BoH can ONLY hole 500 lbs. So what if you need to transport 900 lbs. of stuff and you only have one BoH? Or you already have stuff in your BoH that you want to keep like oil for lanterns, rope, pitons, full plate armor that you want to sell, and other stuff? Or what if you don't have a BoH to began with? Will those examples happen often? Probably not but they have happened to me at least 5 times in three different campaigns. In fact there was a puzzle that we need to move a heavy statue from one room in a dungeon to another room.

    I love the idea of a crotchety old wizard saying “Hmph, these lazy kids and their newfangled Bags of Holding! Why back in my day we had to carry our treasure on floating discs, in the snow, fighting goblins both ways!”
    Re: the material component- The god Mercury was in charge of transportation, including the transport of goods, so I guess that tracks. Also in modern times mercury is associated with madness, because of the hat thing Sam mentioned (where the phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from) so maybe it means “you’re crazy for casting this?”
    As for practical uses, I’m just spitballing here but… could you use it to carry siege weapons, like a cannon or ballista? I don’t know how heavy those are.

      @cavernsandcreatures  Před 15 dny +1

      True. I guess "heavy things that are too big to fit in a Bag of Holding" is something to consider.

    Ever since 2nd edition, I've always wondered if the disc actually has a physical presence or is it more of a force? A disc floating 3' from the floor could be a decent barrier.
    Fun fact: the disc description used to say it floated at waist height, leading to more than a few DM's deciding that it was worn like a belt... Imagine the wizard Hula Hooping 500lbs through a dungeon. 😊

    Spell Mastery this Spell & you can spam this to cover the entire battlefield out to 100-ft. More if you stack'm atop another.
    Or a simple trick is Phantom Steed + Floating Disk.

      @cavernsandcreatures  Před 15 dny +1

      I don't think you can stack them on top of each other, because height from the ground is baked into the spell.

    People put Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound on top if it to move it around the battle field.
    I don't think its worth it but ive seen it done.

    Another classic that’s lost its relevance. The only practical use I’ve ever scene this have rules written is using it as a stretcher for an unconscious NPC. If you’re at a table with a little more respect for the rule of cool, it can be fun.
