    I went out and located some wild plums today. I will try to get some seeds going for planting in the spring. Thanks again John!

    Thank you John! I would also like to thank Roosevelt because he read my mind. I was going to try to start some of these to plant on the back end of my property.

    thank you !!! seeds are not as hard as many people make it !!! right preparation,and right amount of chill , if the seeds are viable they will grow. the squirrels have bin doing it for a long time.

      Thank you Austin !! This year I have peaches up already and chestnuts with roots . the plums went in to the fridge in early Jan. and will need more time . not as much as i once did but, but it is so much fun !!

      john parker Great to hear! I agree about it being fun for sure. I love growing trees from seed, gardening/farming, and zone pushing with cold hardy bananas here in Iowa.

  • @johnparkerthegimpygardener

    thank you Anne !!!! thinning the fruits early will reduce the load and the fruit that remains will get larger , full size trees have less of a problem than do the dwarf trees . here in the north cracking is caused by the sun hitting the frozen trunk the heat builds up and causes the breaks , they usually accrue on the south west side of the tree ,from afternoon sun, white wash or cheep white latex celling paint 2 or 3 parts water to 1part paint applied to the trunk. the old order people here have orchards with white washed tree trunks , do not use paint that has not bin thinned it will make a hard shell and will cause some damage to the tree bark, did not realize that people that far south would have that problem

      john parker wow!!! I think this might have been what wiped out my stone fruit trees these past few years!!! Damn! I wished I had seen this earlier! Anyway thanks for this info! I will protect the new ones this time!

  • @johnparkerthegimpygardener

    thank you !!! where you live it will be no problem to put them out side in some well rotted sawdust , one thing i failed to say is, cover the pile with some chicken wire!!!! the seeds will come up if the squirrel don't get them first. I us the drawer because i can plant them in pots in the green house in Feb may be i will do some out side and video it to show how easy is, if planted out side you should wait till late fall to move them, when they become dormant I can move mine in pots any time.

  • @johnparkerthegimpygardener

    thank you !!! i will have to look that up and get back with you . i know they grow a lot of peaches far south of here, my wife is from Indonesia and that is on the equator, and they grow apples there, but it is at a very altitude , i do know they require a cretin amount of chile hours

    peach trees need several hundred hrs below 47 deg. some types require more that others the nurserys can tell you what type will produce in your area once the buds start a freeze below 27 deg wii kill them i have one tree that starts blooming ist week feb way too early it iffy on that one -------- some one asked about removing the seed from thr hull a shop vise works good wrap the hull in paper towel place in vice slowly turn it will crack open the put in zip bag in fridge two-three weeks then put in good soil on pot wet it it will take awhile dot give up ---dont let dry up keep it damp on warm days set it out side you will see tiny leaves coming up if it works

    I'm glad the seeds made it and can't wait to see how they grow for you.
    Now I have to make a decision, do I keep my allotted crisper drawer for mushrooms or do I use it for seeds. :)

    I had a squirrel dig up most of the hazelnuts I planted, just to go and bury them somewhere else. We'll probably have hazelnuts popping up everywhere now.

  • @johnparkerthegimpygardener

    a good way to plant nuts is to take a tin can that has bin opened and place a hole in the bottom or cut and x, burn the can so that it will rust take your nut seed and place in the soil about 2 " S and place the can over the nut cover the can some , be shore the can is secure , the tree will grow up through the hole and split the can as it rust, and old nut grower told m At a PNGA meeting me that

    Hi John, am trying some peach seeds I got out of peaches from Sam's club. I have 2 questions for you. 1. Do I need to crack the seed from the stone then put in potting soil. Also am going to put them in the fridge. Also do I need to put in freezer for a few days first?

  • @Samuel25737
    @Samuel25737 Před 10 lety +2

    Hi John! Great video, thanks for posting! :)
    If I may ask a quick question? I have just extracted the seeds from the stones (Immediately after consuming the fruit) and placed them within a DAMP paper towel. I then placed the paper towel in a zip lock bag and sealed it. I live in Florida and we do not get much of a winter down here. I have scavenged the internet and I am confused as to whether or not I should put the zip lock bag in the fridge or leave it in a sunny spot. I went ahead and placed them in the fridge to simulate an artificial winter (stratification?)
    Was I supposed to do this? (For 4-5 weeks?) and assuming I did this correctly, I pull the seeds out and place them in a bag of soil?
    Sorry to be that clueless kid on the internet! I am 15 and just trying to learn how things work! :)
    Hope to hear from you!
    ~Sam

      they will need to be in the warn moist soil for apx . 45days and then placed in the bottom drawer , I take and put in my freezer to give them some extra chill some people use a vice and slowly crack thee shell. my problem with starting out doors is that the squirrels tale them . but nature is the best . please let me know how you make out

      john parker Thanks for your response, John! Sorry I took so long to respond. I have followed your instructions and now I have a few plum seedlings in a plastic bag! They currently have cotyledon leaves (The leaves that sprout before the true leaves)
      How long should I leave the seedlings in the bag? Do they need air circulation? Also,about how long does it usually take for the "true leaves" to come in?
      Thanks for your help, it's greatly appreciated!

I place in soil as soon as I see a root ' it will be placed down , I do not know about Florida !! where it is warm all the tine , I put seeds in the chill late summer and fall and place into pots as soon as I see the roots showing here I pot and shield from the cold till it is warm enough to put out let me know how it works for you, new plants are very tender to cold and sun , and need to be hardened off , let me know how it goes

    Would mixing spent grains from a home made brew into the potting soil have any benefit for the seeds? (no mulch around here) I figure since its decomposed grains at the very least it cant hurt it.

    • @johnparkerthegimpygardener
      @johnparkerthegimpygardener  Před 10 lety

      Shore as long as it is done heating. and not real wet, it the same as compost . rotted saw dust is as good as it gets though . well rotted it is loose . grain hulls or chaff would work , I think

  • @taram7408

    I've got a silly question..While picking our backyard peaches last year , any rotten ones we saw we laid in a pile outside. This year I found at least 20+ dark pits,some w/ tiny strings attached (roots?) from the rotten pile last year. I'm in zone 5, so they went thru cold. Can I use them as is to grow a plant? Or start fresh w/ New pits? Thanks and God bless!

    • @johnparkerthegimpygardener
      @johnparkerthegimpygardener  Před 10 lety +1

      Sorry for not getting back sooner Tara !! Usually only get to respond on sat night. they are not roots , with out seeing I will guess that it is a fungus of some sort, they do have a lot of fiber but that would be matted and tangled , a peach root will send down a single tap root out of the end of the pit and then the stem will go upwards they will grow if you cover them with some loose compost or rotted saw dust and it is not in standing water and gets 60-90 days Chill, and you can keep the squirrels away from them, and your question was not silly, PS a seed must be viable to grow, and some years that can be low , places that sell peach seed to start usually place germination rates at around 60% so plant a lot and chose the best ones

    • @taram7408
      @taram7408 Před 10 lety +1

      Thanks!! I picked fresh peaches yest. to get fresh pits. More as an experiment for my 9 yr old. We'll see.. Were extremely lucky w/ this tree. We get BUSHELS of perfect peaches almost yearly! The old seeds were dehydrated. However 1 was in a pile of worm castings with the single root and a 4-6 in stem!! We also got Magnolia, Rhododendron, and other cuttings.

    How do I stop my peach trees, from the branches breaking from the weight of the peaches, also how do I stop the trunk of the tree from cracking..;

      Train your limbs with weights.

    • @UhapiBeauty
      @UhapiBeauty Před 8 lety

      Dandan Yes. Put a small weight tied to a branch. It pulls the branch down slightly. Add more weight (pound or 2 at a a time) over the course of several months. This strengthens the branch at the "crotch" where the most stress is placed. When it fruits, the branches will be strong. Plus, it trains the branches to grow lower so you can reach all the fruit :).

      after 2 months i start checking the baggy every week some will start to root , and when i see roodt in the baggy i take out and put in a deep container with the root down . if you check some of my videos i show the root and planting , all tree seeds that are large seeds are are done the same way . every year i start chestnuts pecans ,peaches and plumbs ,as well as almonds , pine nuts . i check on them every week after2 months . once they start roots you want to plant them . they will tangle . and they will grow in the refrigerator drawer . i keep my plants in side till freeze is over . it is easy once you get the hang of it . one thing to remember is with peaches and plumbs and hazzels , is the soil needs to be almost dry , very little moisture or they will rot ,they are fussy about that . please let me know about your experiance . ps differint varieties will require more or less time depending on their genetics most will need 2 months some 3-4 they will let you know

    Some people do, but nature dose not , and if you put in the freezer I would not place in it at a temp that is less than the lowest zone temp for that verity. for example red haven will grow to zone 5 I believe that is some times 20 below and it dose not stay there . things in the freezer will dry out!!! 60 to 90 day cold stratification ad should have a worm moist period of at least 30 days prior . for a good place to get. seeds is tree seeds.com. has a lot of info also I am going to crack some this year just to see what happens, warning squirrels will destroy your seeds so protect them well

You could have put the seeds in your plastic bag with the compost in it, and said, leave it for a few days in a dark place, and when the roots start to grow put them in little pots, and when the plants are a little bigger, transplant them whereever in your plat of land. thanks.
