- The Patron picks for this year's Valentines had me worried; I almost had to analyze The Divinyls "I Touch Myself" but Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It" barely eeked out the win. wipes forehead I see what you're doing Patrons. I have heard this song when I was young, but I've never dived into Tina's voice and analyzed it professionally. Let's get to it!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she analyzes Tina Turner for the first time, performing "What's Love Got To Do With It” live.

Tina has always had that rasp, like a human saxophone. Truly a legend. ❤️ Please more Tina.❤️
She had a rasp all of her career, in all of her range, so it seems like a natural trait
More Tina analysis for sure!
Tina was famous for her voice, her dancing, her high-energy performance, and her legs.
How simple statement
Age fifty she was a Hanes Hosiery girl.
...and she knows how to use them. 😼
I agree with all of this. Perfectly succinct.
@@TheCharismaticVoice She is also the person that taught Mick Jagger how to dance.
Young Tina Turner doing Proud Mary live in the 70s is the best thing you'll ever see! I think the video is called something like "Ike and Tina Turner - Proud Mary".
And Nutbush city
Yes, that is the version to watch. Not only is she singing, but she is dancing strenuously at the same time. I would suggest that the only difference between Tina at that age and 2009 Tina is that she doesn't dance as wildly for this video. I would also suggest that the techniques she used to enable her to dance and sing at the same time are at work in this video; she has continued to sing pretty much the same way but has reduced her insane level of physicality as she got older.
Even in her 40s and 60s she slays Proud Mary! Janis Joplin and Tina Turner are my favorite vocalists from 60s-80s. RIP, Queen of Rock ❤🕊
I also love watching much older Tina doing it live and still pulling off the spinning dance moves while singing.
Alongside her performance of the same song with Beyoncé at the Grammys in 2008. Such talent!
We Don't Need Another Hero is another epic song of hers. And she rocked the screen in Mad Max Thunderdome! She was such an amazing person, given what life handed her early on. She is asperational on so many levels. She is deeply missed, but I am so glad she was with us!
She was amazing as the acid Queen in Tommy.
It is indeed epic. Another great one is her duet with David Bowie singing "Tonight". The way they synchronize their voices and create something new, is amazing.
her live performances of the song are epic too.
Never heard anyone claim she was asperational. She made you rough or uneven?
I always cry when I hear that song, I don't know why. Some sort of contained energy overload.
Private Dancer is an amazing song, written by Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)…, which Tina always crushes.
Tina Turner singing the theme to "Goldeneye" for a James Bond film is epic.
Elizabeth should think about doing a deep dive into the Bond theme singers ... Some real belting voices in there and superb compositions. Starting with the amazing Dame Shirley Bassy. Thats how to open your singing hole boyo the girl from Tigerbay Who sang Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever. Tina was the Godmother of Pop and Rock ..Bassy the Diva of stage and the big screen... ask Rue Paul 😂 and countless others.
Written by Bono from U2
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 that's a great idea.
+1 for Shirley ! Diamonds Are Forever is my fave
Live and let die is one of my favorites but thay were all impressive and MTV decades before
I was blessed to have seen her live a couple of times. Her magic? She SAW every single person in the arena. She loved us. She gave us her ALL every show. We were in her living room, getting a personal show. Her life was so HARD, her final days were HARD. I wish there was more happy days in her life. I adored her.
River Deep, Mountain High.
River Deep Mountain High one of my all time favorite performances of hers.
❤
What I tell people is always "The deepest regret comes from what we don't do or say as it is left undone." I had two tickets to see Tina Turner around 1983 at a club that I was an official photographer at. It was a dark and stormy day, so I gave the tickets away. I was thinking of staying home near the fire with a girlfriend at the time. The couple that went came back and told me that Tina Turner was the most incredible performer they had ever gotten to see up close and personal. She looks around the room as she sings, and engages each and every person like "I'm going to mke you feel these words!" That is what manyhave told me ... shortly after that show, Private Dancer hit the radio airwaves and Tina filled stadiums! I'd started going to concerts back in 1978, and I've been to thousands of of shows .. but that night is one that I regret missing for the rest of my life. I would have gotten great up close pictures and likely have met her too. Okay, smaking myself back to reality as I've got to consider all the concerts and shows I have been too ... we can't go to all of them. I am glad that you were able to have seen her in concert and that you felt her see you. She was simply the best!
Tina truly was the GOAT, she KNEW it, and never let it change her heart or soul. Simply the Best is an apt song from her body of work. ❤❤❤
Tina has an incredible story/history. She talks about her ability to project like she does coming from working in the cotton field. The only way they could communicate with each other while out working the fields was to yell. Be really loud. There are dozens of interesting videos breaking down and analyzing her voice and why it is so unique. She took this somewhat deep raspy voice created from what was probably damaged vocal cords and became a superstar. She also has amazing recordings teaching Buddist chanting. She was an incredible human being. She was a survivor.
Her chanting was really something else. Truly full of light. Glad she was here.
Early in her career she once had bronchitis, then pneumonia, then tuberculosis and a collapsed right lung! A survivor, indeed!
'Field holler'
Tina was an absolute badass. I’ve always liked this song - and “Better Be Good to Me” as well.
Seeing and hearing Tina as The Acid Queen in The Who's rock opera Tommy blows my socks off every time I hear it. Highly recommended!
Oh yeah. One of my favourite ever albums.
@@shegocrazy great album, and movie. I hope Elizabeth might watch sometime -- probably not on channel, though perhaps a selection or two could make it on?
Anyway, yeah, Elizabeth, if you want to see how her voice has evolved, Acid Queen might be a good way to find out!
Patty LaBelle also did a fantastic job as the Acid Queen.
Tina always had a huskyness to her voice. One of the greatest voices ever
yeah it has nothing to do with her age!!!
Tina’s legs were in the Rod Stewart video “Legs”…..those legs are iconic:)
Really? Huh......I didn't know that. 😊
Do you mean HOT LEGS?LEGS is ZZ TOP
Like Queen Elizabeth, Tina was one of those people you thought would be in your life forever. The world is a sadder place without her! :(
?
Thanks nature that didn't happen. I became a bit nervous in case of the lizard
The comparison is a wee bit off ^^
One was a glowing star that outshone some really dark times and who's work will be remembered and appreciated for a long time.
The other one was the half rotten poster figure of a dynasty of racist colonialist.
@MLawrence2008 Absolutely right. Two fantastic, outstanding women. Both sadly missed and the world is a darker place without them both.
I had the privilege of working one of her concerts at the A.C.C and she blew me away. I had always been a fan, but working in concert venues you learn fast that most singers do NOT sound the same live. Some also don't have the personality live that they try to portray on an album. With Tina you get what you see, she is as vivacious and energetic live as she was in videos. The energy in the place and the way she interacted with her audience was amazing. So happy I got to work her concert, definitely one of my favourite concerts of the hundreds I've worked. (top 5 )
Proud Mary!!! That's when Tina got noticed. Loved it. And her.
Tina, the Queen of Rock.
Her voice is how she looks
Her looks are like her voice
Voice & looks are AWESOME
Tina thank you for the memories ❤
Had the pleasure of seeing Tina Turner in the early 1980's, right up there is the front row. What a performer! She was shakin' it the entire show. The hardest working female in show business. Tons of charisma - she played the audience like a bell. )) NOBODY could sing " Proud Mary" like Tina!
Just at the beginning watching this. But.
I would Love to see you do a vocal comparison of this 70 y/o's performance and one from the 80s. She has definitely made adjustments for her vocal changes with age. But..I would love to see just how much or how little.
Great video as usual.
That whole concert is amazing from start to finish!
Few people age as well as Tina Turner. She definitely aged like a fine wine. She's in her 70's and flirting so well with that crowd.
OMG, you must watch the younger Tina doing Proud Mary when she was still with Ike. It's amazing! One if their later tunes was Mountain High, River Low which is also fantastic. Phil Spector produced it and used his "wall of sound" technique which was probably a mistake, though.
She was magnificent. Good to watch her get an Australian rugby league crowd going with Simply the Best!
to say that her voice was dynamic would be a understatement I have always enjoyed her music and I'M 73 and heard it all. another great reaction video. thank you for sharing this great tune with all of us.
I remember when she released the Private Dancer album in 1984 which launched her comeback. I was 12 at the time with no say in my daily activities so my mother dragged me kicking and screaming to a Tina Turner concert. After a couple songs I was all in, she is an amazing performer. Seeing her perform Proud Mary live is still a highlight memory for me. As to the legs, she has always been famous for her legs and has never hid them. Another great reaction thank you.
Proud Mary is a must. Tina was amazing and an ICON. A true performer ❤
Tina Turners vocals were so raspy/raw but soooo smooth. I was fortunate to see her farewell tour in person back in the day in 2000 or 2001 her voice was still killing it as the vocals as well as her dancing skills.... you also should do a live Proud Mary of hers as well...
One of the best to ever do it! IMHO, one of the BEST duets of the 80's was Tina Turner and Bryan Adams "It's only love"! The performance of that song back then, she was at the absolute top of her game, and he was an up and coming star. And they had a really awesome chemistry onstage together! Would love to see you analyze this classic! Thanks Elizabeth!
Thank you Elizabeth! We love Tina Turner - and you.
Yes more Tina, please!!!
It was nice to hear your comments on vocal aging. I’ve noticed that with performers such as Willy Nelson and the late Tony Bennett. They both adapted their phrasing and technique to still produce great musical performances. Glad you referenced that!😊
A true legend!
I saw Tina in 1998 and to this day I think it’s the best concert I’ve been to. She always gave so much on stage and the audience gave right back. This was one special lady. ❤
Love Tina. Always my diva!!!! The GOAT! RIP Tina. Love you!
This woman was a true force of nature. Big respect to queen Tina Turner.
Incredible voice and the greatest legs every in rock music.
Wonderful. Tina Turner doing River Deep, Mountain High. Wonderful song.
She's always had a unique, but enrapturing voice. I love it, always will love it.
This song has a special place in my ❤. I remember the whole album
This will be fun. Tina is a powerhouse in many sense of the word.
Love Tina Turner! RIP ❤
Tina was The Rock Queen👍🌹
Tina was the Acid Queen!
Saw Tina at Wembley in the 90's, and her energy level was incredible, I swear her backing dancers were having trouble keeping up with her, and they were considerably younger, all this while still singing brilliantly.
My dad saw Tina live back in the 60s and said it was the greatest performance he ever saw and still is to this day. He said her singing and dancing were unrivaled.
Was lucky enough to see Tina in the late 90's. Awesome concert. One of the best performances I've ever seen.
A true music legend!
Love all your reaction videos. Thanks
Saw Ms Tina & Cyndi Lauper when they were on tour. Grateful to have seen them.
*autocorrect
Tina Turner and David Bowie singing Tonight
That is a must to hear and watch
I was lucky enough to be there - it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
As you're doing a great run of rocking ladies with huge voices, I would really love to hear your analysis of one of Joan Armatrading's hits. Not just the big hit 'Love and Affection', but 'The Weakness in Me' (which tears a hole in anyone who's been through what she's singing about), or 'Down to Zero', probably one of her most complicated songs. Please give this underrated vocal powerhouse some love. Lots of live videos available from her prime in the late 70's / early 80's, but she's still touring today...
Great analysis, Elizabeth, I'm sorry to see that you're still not quite over your bout of illness, all the very best for your speedy recovery.
Another good live track to do is "Proud Mary" by 'Ike and Tina Turner', it's from 1970, off the album "Workin' Together", someone uploaded a version which they called (incorrectly) "Rolling on The River".
Looking forward to another great one. Distinctive voice. You always knew it was her singing. Tina is a legend and was a consummate performer. Glad you are doing a live video so you can see the energy she had. Private Dancer was a huge album in 1983 with a lot of great songs including Better Be Good To Me, the title track and this one. I hope you get to some of her earlier works like Nutbush City Limits, River Deep Mountain High and Proud Mary as well.
River Deep Mountain High is a great song by her!
@@laurieemme1534 It is amazing. The Animals did a great cover of it where they paid a short tribute to "Tina-ni-na-ni-na-ni-na-ni-na-na"
I love seeing a crowd who are geniunely happy to see the act. All the cuts to the crowd show someone bopping along. It's something that you can't get from an audio recording, no matter how good the singer.
I’ve loved Tina since I was a teenager!
She was a survivor!
Rose up to become an icon!
There will never be another Tina Turner!
RIP Tina Turner. It'll be interesting to hear what Elizabeth thinks of her gravelly voice.
Damn, I didn't realise she wasn't with us anymore...
@@kalasanty433 This past May 💔
@@kalasanty433 She was 83 years old when she passed away.
Man, she really was some singer, performer and woman. She was just a queen in her own way. And I say, as long as you can get up there and do it, and lay down great takes in the studio, then go right ahead. She worked that stage with her own brand of fine magic.
I always dig when you analyze an artist that I was raised listening to, so thanks for this. *high-fives*
I was little when I saw her for the first time on Ed Sullivan show singing proud Mary, and she has been one of the people that I’ve admired all my life. She had a hard life at the start, but she was blessed at the end with a beautiful career and admires of what we call fans. She will be missed. RIP 🫶🏻💕❤️💕🤠
I saw her in the 80s it was the highest energy concert of my life and I have been to a lot of concerts.
Well, I had a pleasure to see Tina live, and it was amazing, and unforgettable.
when tina came to st johns newfoundland there was a thousand people waiting for her at the airport
she was rock and roll royalty
the show she put on was spectacular
rip tina we will always love you
It's so interesting to hear how Tina Turner could do what she was doing. Great explanations Elizabeth! Its really encouraging to see and hear how you can still be a vital performer as you age. Her talent and skill are impressive. No excuses required!
I have loved Tina’s tenacity and voice… and legs since the first time I heard her decades ago. I Can’t Stand the Rain is my personal favorite. Thank you for some Tina!
Besides her unique voice and incredible personal strength, the things I'll allways remember will be the 'Tina Turner Walk' and the characteristic 'kick' she does when singing. RIP, we love you.
I do hope that we will be hearing more from Tina going forward !!!!!
No one struts (or sings) quite like Tina Turner did!!! Great song, great analysis. More Tina please, maybe more from her prime as well!!!
I just discovered your channel and love it! I've always felt like singing was like speaking but with an extra layer of emotion that transcends speach alone.
I really feel that when I hear Liz Fraser from The Cocteau Twins. Especially on songs like "Rilkean Heart" where she does this sort of melodic crescendo that feels like some majestic bird spreading it's wings and soars ever higher into the clouds. Gives me goosebumps ever time I hear it.
If you haven't heard her before, I think you would find her vocals really interesting.
Glad I found your channel!
😀👍
She is fantastic
She spent a life on stage and her craft is unmatched..... I watched a small dance routine from her and without error she started by dropping her mic stand out of view and seamlessly lifted and locked it back when she started singing. so much detail leading to absolute perfection....oh and the voice of course!
Now you've got to listen to River Deep Mountain High, which I think was her greatest achievement (and Phil Spector's, too---its lack of sales success broke him).
The energy flowing back and forth with the audience singing the singers lyrics back to them.
Songs have been written about the energy and leaving everything on stage and the aftermath.
Fun Fact: Tina Turner, along with the Ikettes sang some background vocals for Frank Zappa. Montana is one of the songs.
She was in the top 10, winning a Grammy with Proud Mary back in 1971. What a fabulous vocalist & performer!
Legendary! My mums a Tina fan so I grew up with her music, such an amazing voice and an incredible performer.
She loved performing and that certainly drove her. But also, I think she had to be able to feel how much we all loved and admired her. She was a goddess.
Well, now I have to go put the headphones on, close my eyes, and sink solidly into my favorite version of this. Every time you do an artist I love - I have to listen to your analysis, and then I immediately play through and revisit why I do. This woman has seen it all, and brought a great many of us along with her.
I agree with the other posters in that Tina singing Proud Mary is another you should review. Her stage presence is amazing, and her voice simply commands you into whatever emotion she wishes.
YES I am excited for this
I saw her in concert twice in the same year. Tina was off the hook. She looked good! I miss her!! RIP Queen
Also watch her movie. She went through hell with Ike Turner. But her 2cd husband was a gem!
i get so emaotional about this great talent when i see videos, Tina was a true Icon
Tina Turner has always been a force of nature. Love her!
Chrissy Amphlett was a goddess of Australian music, and an absolute icon. In my opinion very underrated, and was taken from us way too early in life from Breast Cancer. In fact, their song "I Touch Myself" was used in a very success ad campaign in Australia to create awareness for women to check themselves for lumps, so it's a song that has saved countless lives.
You owe it to yourself to review her.
It's crazy I just happened to catch this video on my way to a DJ a party with a set I'm kicking off with an older Tina song, Black Coffee (1972). Fabulous stuff!
People forget that it is not about the best performance. It's about the unique delivery of every performance because that is where the spirit of music is. Tina Turner is a legend
How about Tina Turner singing “It’s Only Love” with Bryan Adams? I’m sure many would be fascinated to hear your vocal analysis of this duet. She’d have been in her mid-40’s and Bryan in his mid-20’s. The performative chemistry was awesome too.
Loved your review. I wish more people understood what a fantastic vocalist she was
Went to concert back in the 80's and was sensational . Amazing to still be doing that at 70 .
The Divinyls "I Touch Myself" would have been fun !!!!!
I would like to see Shirley Bassey "Goldfinger" - Live at Royal Albert Hall, 1974
I always loved the way Tina left that pitch bend just a little bit flat at the top on the word "love" whenever she sang "What's *love* got to do with it." It gave that phrase a bluesy kind of tone and an edge of pain that always tugged at my heart. Just one of many aspects of that song that I loved from the get-go. But I don't think there was any Tina Turner song that didn't just knock me to my knees.
I worked concert security in St. Louis back in 1993. I worked her concert at Riverport Ampitheater. Right front of the stage. Awesome concert.
Love your channel! Please analyze Tina Turner LIVE at Wembley Stadium:" Proud Mary! You won't be disappointed! RIP, Tina.
I was fortunate enough to see her live in the late 90s. It was incredible.
Yes! I've waited for this! I'm really interested of hearing and seeing your analyze of Tina's performance on A Change Is Gonna Come with Robert Cray. Hoping to see your reaction to Patti LaBelle's version of Acid Queen live with The Who.
Tina always brings on the chills, lawd
Tina always had a great band, gorgeous dancers and stunning backing vocalists.
1710 in concert once and it was fabulous she really know how to put on a show . Tina you are truly missed ❤
The Queen of Rock N Roll! I love me some Tina Turner!
She still looked Great at 70! Beautiful lady. I loved her music. 🤗
There's a great video on YT of Tina live at Wembley in 85 with a guest appearance of rising star Bryan Adams doing It's Only Love. Sound and video quality are of the time but it's so great to watch.
Her performance of Help on the private dancer tour was so powerful that it has stayed with me all this time
More Tina, Please. Still too this day my favorite Female pop/rock artist.
She was always dynamic and always had a deep, raspy voice. Over the years I never noticed any real change in the quality of her vocals. The quality of her singing, and perhaps some of the nuance may have grown overtime. But her vocal quality as a contralto never changed. Yes, she is one of the GOATs!!! ❤❤❤
I first heard her on one of the early albums, with Ike. I was 19 and that was 50 years ago. I always loved her.
