- Watch Sundown (1941) | Full Movie on The Film Detective. Englishmen fighting Nazis in Africa use an exotic woman to vanquish the enemy in this forgotten gem from director Henry Hathaway (Niagara, How the West Was Won). The film stars Bruce Cabot, George Sanders, Harry Carey, Cedric Hardwicke, Dorothy Dandridge, and the lovely Gene Tierney as Zia, the mystery woman. How did she end up among the natives? With a musical score by the great Miklos Rozsa (Ben Hur, The Thief of Bagdad) and cinematography by Oscar winner Charles Lang (A Farewell to Arms), this feature has a pedigree like few others!

Gene Tierney is, by all accounts, the most beautiful woman that I have ever seen. She is absolute perfection!
Even though I like more "juicy" women, I have to agree! She was one of the most beautiful women ever lived!!!
Her underbite was always pointed out by jealous rivals... and her mental illness. Sad. Oleg made out like a bandit, too.
This was a Class A movie!!! I am not even interested in these subjects this movie has taken on, but the way it is acted n presented made for a wonderful film to watch, with a magnificent message " He who waits with Faith, waits with Victory"!!
@rescuepetsrule6842 She had a slight OVERBITE. Which made her all the more beautiful.
excellent film! Gene Tierney , stunningly beautiful! THank you for this!
Gene Tierney was just perfection. unsurpassable beauty, never matched !
I heard of her, never knew she looked like that...
Surprised she wasn't more famous
Hedy Lamar
I agree : perfection. Her beauty is... unreal :)
She is my favorite actress : beautiful, talented and certainly a good person too. And her private life has been a tragedy :(
And yes, Petrillo : I am suprised she's not more famous.
Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Liz Taylor, etc... everything knows them.
But when I talk about Gene Tierney, most people says me : who ?
PS : sorry for my english, I am french and I dont' speak/write english usually. But I try :)
@@philrenard7986 You do very well,
This is what movies used to be about- this is what we couldn’t wait for - Real drama, backgrounds, actors that individually held your attention & a story that completely held you in suspense ✨😳✨ and well there’s GENE - Need I say anything more ⁉️
I love this movie. In fact I could have a movie room and only watch Miss Tierney films and never tire. Such a beautiful woman and so talented. Great beyond words.
@@edgallagher7097 you have an utterly sophisticated taste in actresses.!!!!!
Gene Tierney - my favorite actress! Beautiful inside and out.
Hello
What a really great movie!! Such a refreshing change from the crap they make now. Thanks
Gene Tierney was certainly a beauty!
Unreal!
Gene is guys name
Gene Tierney and Grace Kelly....How beautiful were they!!There has been plenty since but none better.Absolutely gorgeous.
Definitely, top two old Hollywood beauties.
and they did it without running around half dressed
@@davidleonard3887 they are ten times better looking then the skanks in Hollywood now
@@djr6876 Agreed when you add Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak - Ava Gardner was shocking gorgeous too Vivien Leigh & Audrey Hepburn, we'll be here all day
catherine deneuve too
Excellent movie. Watching this is like going back in time or visiting a museum. Nothing like todays movies which are mostly CGI cartoons.
Great white woman gets free shoes from natives . . . this is not a cartoon?
@@briseboy BLM . Ha ha
Great movie. It's sad that the movies of today are so empty of spirit and humanity. Most of the movies today are empty of plot/script interaction and real human interaction without the violence, sex, foul language and nudity. Of course, we can't forget all the special effects instead of great stories.
STILL THINK "LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN" WAS TIERNEY'S FINEST HOUR...AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL USE OF TECHNICOLOR I HAVE EVER SEEN....
Gene Tierney thought so too. At least she said so in a interview.
Cat Magic no you’re thinking Son Of Fury (1942) with Tyrone Power. Leave Her To Heaven (1945) was the one where Tierney’s character becomes so obsessed with her husband she let’s her brother in law drown in order to have him to herself.
I GUESS YOU DIDN'T GET MY COMMENT...I SAID TIERNEY'S BEST WAS "LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN" BECAUSE SHE GOT A NOMINATION FOR BEST ACTRESS FOR THAT FILM...MOST PEOPLE AGREE WITH ME...SORRY YOU DON'T...
JIM RICK I agree with you I was answering to another comment in this thread. Leave Her To Heaven is one of my favorite movies
Jim Rick--- I totally agree. A breath taking film. I have it on DVD. Gene is so wonderfully evil in it.
What a treat to discover this. Tierney has quite a strong presence at such a relatively tender age
Excellent movie with an excellent cast of actors. They just don't make them like this anymore. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you!
Gene Tierney was so simply stunning
Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh and Gene Tierney are the top, TOP beauties.
Good old English war movie. George Sands is one of my favorite villains; but in this one he's a good guy. Realistic plot, well-acted patriotic story of the noble English versus the evil Nazis. The post-climactic church service would never be made today. "The church holds us together and the army defends her", says the dying officer. I say, good show, old boy! It's true.
George Sands was a French woman novelist who dressed in drag. Sanders maybe?
"'The church holds us together and the army defends her,' says the dying officer. I say, good show, old boy! It's true."
What a load of hogwash. The church (and religion in general) has done more to tear us apart than to unite us. And the army is used for a lot of things--defense being only one of them. And even then, it is often a case of both sides feeling that their army is defending them against the other.
Gene Tierney and Dorothy Dandridge... nice!
Gene Tierney? Perhaps the most beautiful and charming lady of the film. Films during 1940 ies: Leave her to heaven, Dragonwick, Son of Fury, Razors edge... she really leaves you breathless. I'm her great fun
Leave her to Heaven..loved that movie!
In the beginning in the plane...couldn't believe how beautiful that woman was....
@@herbertpetrillo485 do you mean the train scene? She's staring at Cornel Wilde...breathtakingly beautiful face.
Apoteka. You mean, 'fan'?
I love Dragonwyke
What a wonderful gem of a movie☺
What a *_Goood_* AND "exotic" little suspense thriller..... And another fully developed Henry Hathaway delight!! 👌
Well cast throughout, with always wonderful, sometimes ever remarkable, George Sanders in Classic Form = Such a true "Star of the Silver Screen", where the Golden Age of Hollywood was duly named, and sadly long passed.....
Great movie. Sir Cedric Hardwick was the voice at the beginning of the 1954 war of the worlds movie. One of the great speeches.
Gene Tierney is as exotic as the character and location. The black bride to be is also beautiful. Spectacular ending. Criterion needs to reissue this film.
Perfect. Thank you. July, 2024.
It never occurred to me before, but Tierney's first name is spelled the masculine way (usually short for Eugene). A female is usually "Jean."
Wikipedia explains why: "She was named after a beloved uncle, who died young."
This definitely was at the beginning of Gene Tierney’s career. Bruce Cabot as a lead way back when, but a fine actor and long career. He was in many of john Wayne’s movies later.
Her face is like a diamond. Every facet is perfection!
Good old fashioned entertainment a real rollicking two fisted action film that never let up.Thanks for posting.
Great job! The sound is perfect. Thanks. Great movie.
That was a good movie, much better than most from that period.
Thanks for posting this. Gene was exquisite..
Dorothy Dandridge! You have my attention 😍
No one is talking about her! 🥺
I’m here for Dorothy Dandridge. .. and how Africa is portrayed in the mid century just prior to independence .
No prejudice in this film like some later films good film respect for the Africans God bless Africa
A different kind of show. Well worth watching. The sound, for me, was poor but I CC'd it. There has to be a little better interpretation but it is understood. Thanks for letting this be shown.
A nice movie with apt BGM for its settings .... Quite intriguing also .... Enjoyed it .. Thanks
On a George Sanders binge and so glad I found this gem! I even had a surprise appearance from Dorothy Dandridge! Refreshing to see an old time movie that shows black people as people and not just dumb savages. Not too degrading towards black people - they actually used black people instead of blackface and showed the culture! Shame it didn't do better when it was released, it could have set an example! 38:14
Even so, the "white man's burden" attitude sticks out. It may not be fair to judge 80 year old movies by today's beliefs, but I still can't help myself from doing so.
@@DavidSmith-kd8mw I agree. I just meant that maybe if this was the standard for when black people appeared in mainstream film instead of the whole shuck/jive/blackface act, it might have expanded the range of roles black people at the time were reduced to.
In old movies black people seemed to be rarely shown on screen, that when they do appear its almost mystifying. But just as soon as that feeling comes I begin to imagine how they must have been treated on the sets of these productions, given that they weren't even granted basic rights that are missing in even today's time.
When I see the talent in films like Carmen Jones and Miracle in Harlem, it just saddens me that there was too much prejudiced to see the potential in investing in black actors.
I'm glad film has evolved to invest a more divisive media that showcases a wide range of talent.
From the depiction of other peoples, religions customs and governing by understanding and working together. in 80 years we appear to have moved only backwards in our attitudes.
What is sad, heartbreaking and even shocking, that in today's so called, 'space age', with incredible enlightenment in all ares of life, astounding technology and incredible wealth and resources, that we are still living in a world where people are going homeless, hungry and uneducated..
And that skin color is still an issue......
And that is a whole other essay.......
When people stop identifying with a color. Realize only 2 kinds of humans on earth. Alive or dead. Your very words indicate you've been indoctrinated to classify or identify with those color pie chart groups created by those in power for centuries. Just stop it.
What a splendid movie!.
Hello Susan,
How are you doing ?
These were the movies 🎥 I grew up watching with real Movie Stars, not one-movie wonders.
I enjoyed this film. 1941?Unbelievable.
George Sanders is good.
Thank you so much for this movie. Enjoyed it. Greetings from Canada!
Top character actor Joseph Calleia has worked in England.'Noose' with Nigel Patrick and Stanley Holloway.
Kenya is moved to SW near four corner. From 2.00-2.53 there is Ship Rock in backround.
Great old movie of in Africa bagdad with great acting Gene Tierney, Bruce Cabot, George Sanders, Harry Carey, Joseph Calleia and beautiful Dorothy Dandridge
(Baghdad is in Iraq, not Africa)
Or Bagdad, n w Florida
The Film Detective
Thanks! It is a rare gem indeed.
Btw, you left out Reginald Gardiner and Carl Esmond (great Austrian actor, refugee from Nazis in the 1930's, played many roles in American films) and Marc Lawrence (as Hammud) from your cast credits! haha
Incidentally, Woody Strode appears in his first role (uncredited, he's the tribal police escorting Hammud, he shoves him before Sanders and Cabot). It's rare indeed, and interesting, to see Bruce Cabot, Joseph Calleia, and George Sanders NOT playing bad guys, and Marc Lawrence NOT playing a gangster! Dorothy Dandridge (Kipsang's bride/widow, poor girl, had to marry the old man! ?) must be about eighteen or nineteen in this, and Gene Tierney about twenty or twenty-one ! WOW I'm an old movie buff and never saw this film.
Just love the dialogue...and gene tierney7
Walter Wanger on the credits is generally a VERY GOOD SIGN of a good movie!!
George sanders in one of his rare “good guy” roles
This was a good flick. I have not seen it before.
I love this movie
awesome adventure movie thank you for the upload
It is a terrible movie but I enjoyed it. I love Gene Tierney. I am always impressed with her beauty. Laura will always be my favourite Gene Tierney's movie. Shangai gesture was "terribly" enjoyable too! The ghost and Mrs Muir is charming. Leave her to heaven, heaven can wait... love them all.
Why do you say terrible?
Quite engrossing adventure right through the very end. Unless I'm mistaken it seems as though at least some of it was filmed on location.
New Mexico & Arizona
It is a fun film! Gene Tierney is gorgeous as always! And apparently they spared little expense by sending a camera crew to capture photos of the famous Kenyan pyramids! LOL
1941, most of the world was at war. Looks more like Arizona or New Mexico
this IS a Gem!
Yes gene Tierney superb
Excellent film
Gene Tierney a Stone Cold Fox !!!!!
Interesting quote: "Civilization: the Church holds it together, and the army defends it."
@Cyber Zorro Definitely despised; but worse to find the truth and refuse it.
Hollywood would not say that today
@@christianfrommuslim aa
Yes. And this time the Nazis are the EU, U.N. & NWO & their army is Islamic.
@Cat Magic It IS true. Wherever there's a civilization easy to conquer it is at risk. People are tribal & always have been.
And to war against being conquered is as old as time. It's nothing new. But all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.
Chose wisely as to what side you'll be on - who's end game is more humane.
Great movie
Shiprock, New Mexico on the Navajo Reservation.
Ah a score by Rozsa, I know his son and visited Miklos home in the Hollywood hills a time or two.
The young Bruce Cabot had a commanding screen persona. I was only familiar with his later bit parts in John Wayne movies. Interesting how Hollywood creatively used New Mexico and California locales for African desert landscapes. "Rhino Rock" as seen on the co-pilot's map is actually volcanic Shiprock in N.W. New Mexico.
incomprehensible...
Gene T. a beautiful woman in her own right is exceptionally stunning thanks to the soft focus cam lense used for her tight shots. It's an illusion, like much of this WWII propaganda film is, but who cares, a good script and cast make it work. Bruce Cabot, almost a decade after King Kong still made a convincing heroic figure. His speech about Africa early in the film is laughably condescending.
A young Dorothy Dandridge, playing the widowed servant girl of a loyal to Queen & country native soldier didn't require a diffuser lense to look stunning.
Young Dorothy Dandridge 18.
Always thought George Sanders was terrific.
Yes but a sad ending. He owned a house that he loved but remarried to a woman who hated it and she sold it. He booked into a hotel, wrote a note saying that life no longer interested him and swallowed some pills, so sad as he was still young.
He was good in Village of the Damned, when he had to cap his kid & himself to save the day !
Good movie. Recall that Bruce Cabot also starred in King Kong. Later in life, he was a pal of John Wayne was in his movies.
TIERNEY SEMPRE FOI LINDA!!!!
The most beautiful brunettes in film were 1. Vivien Leigh, 2. Hedy Lamar, and 3. Gene Tierney.
And Claudia Cardinale
so many good comments, must be good
Gene Tierney -Eternal
needs volume enhancement ....great film......
all star cast
I'de love to watch, if I could hear it.
Get better speakers. I can hear it fine.
I like the black woman she was very beautiful. I think her name was Jeni Le Gon.
That's Gene Tierney
@@aw6408 Im not talking about her. Jenny Le Gon appears all over the movie in random places 31:41 52:50 58:43
Long ago met Bruce Cabot. Then I didn't realize he was Jack Driscoll in King Kong.
Boy you were lucky hes such legend. He made lot movies but struggled and none of these movies ever on tv. Except king Kong and Most Dangerous Game.
Really enjoyed this BW movie.
An action packed film with a grand ending in war time England. Reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark...
My great grandfather was killed in Germany’s V2 missile bombings of London during WWII. He was 97. He might still be alive if the Nazis didn’t get him.
Add one to the like column.
Those are elephant tusks for table legs- oh my!
A Director asked a cameraman what were the best angles to shoot Gene Tierney from? Left side, right side? The cameraman said: All and any sides.
wow!
Dorothy … ❤️
Interesting - at 10:24 "Ottawa is the capital of Canada" is mentioned. And at 24:53 "Two thirds of the world, water." ... "If you lose Africa, you lose the war, you lose the world." At 1:24 "don't lose your ideals ... " A rich and varied movie.
That might be the scariest movie of all time - those Africans firing machine guns is one of the most disturbing images I ever saw - and apparently it was a real threat that the Nazis would arm Africa with modern weaponry and a sudden uprising would make AXIS a reality instead of a "pact of steel" that turned into paper...
Hope it picks up at 9 min
Yes ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can't find this movie with french subtitles
From 21:17 to 21:27 we get a good look at the advanced marksman's technique of throwing the bullets out of the gun at the enemy.
8:08… The woman with the hand bag made me chuckle. Very middle class.
They have the ivory hunter shown in a positive light. Historically they were viewed as the good guys back than before the world turned it's attention toward the rapid extinction of the elephants. It's interesting watching a movie nowadays talking about how terrible ivory hunters are and than watching a movie from back than where the ivory hunter is one of the good guys.
Gene Tierney was a knock out playing a wealthy Arab trader in tale about War, guns and empire. A far off world , where the British had two-thirds of world and slowly lost.
